http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jascha_Heifetz
Jascha Heifetz (/ˈhaɪfɪts/; February 2 [O.S. January 20] 1901 – December 10, 1987)
was a Lithuanian-born American violinist. He was born in Vilnius. As a teen, he moved with his family to the United States, where his Carnegie Hall debut was rapturously received. He had a long and successful performing and recording career; after an injury to his right (bowing) arm, he focused on teaching. The New York Times called him "perhaps the greatest violinist of all time."
…
Technique and timbre
Heifetz is considered to be one of the finest violinists of all time. Heifetz's technical command of his instrument – his physical ability to play the violin with stunning precision – is regarded by many critics as unequaled. That physical control enabled Heifetz to produce a distinctive tone quality, intense and shimmering, that came to be regarded as his trademark. Yet, from time to time his near-perfect technique and conservative stage demeanor caused some critics to accuse him of being overly mechanical, even cold. Virgil Thomson called Heifetz's style of playing "silk underwear music", a term he did not intend as a compliment. Other critics argue that he infused his playing with feeling and reverence for the composers' intentions. His style of playing was highly influential in defining the way modern violinists approach the instrument. His use of rapid vibrato, emotionally charged portamento, fast tempi, and superb bow control coalesced to create a highly distinctive sound that make Heifetz's playing instantly recognizable to aficionados. The violinist Itzhak Perlman, who himself is noted for his rich warm tone and expressive use of portamento, describes Heifetz's tone as like "a tornado" because of its emotional intensity. Perlman also said that Heifetz preferred to be recorded relatively close to the microphone; as a result, one would perceive a somewhat different tone quality when listening to Heifetz during a concert hall performance as opposed to a recording.

| | | wherestip যুক্তরাষ্ট্র Local time: 14:28 চাইনিজ/চিনা থেকে ইংরেজি + ... the middle andante movement | Jan 18, 2014 |

Thanks, pk. I agree with you about the last 2 movements. IMO, the Dutch lady was especially impressive.

I love that performance. The DVD it's on "Jerry Herman's Broadway at the Hollywood Bowl" is one of the first DVDs I've ever bought. Unfortunately I can't find a clip of it on Youtube.
These Brits did a great job of this number too. According to Wikipedia, tap dance originated in the United States with roots in other cultures of dancing "such as the Juba Dance, English Lancashire Clog dancing, and probably most notably Irish stepdancing."

Tap Your Troubles Away(Anna-Jane Casey)
Tap your troubles away
You've bounced a big check
Your mom has the vapors
Tap your troubles away
Your car had a wreck
They're serving you papers
When you're the one that it always rains on
Simply try putting your Mary Janes on
Your boss just gave you the axe
There's years of back tax
You simply can't pay
If a sky full of crap
Always lands in your lap
Make a curtsey and
Tap your troubles away
Tap your troubles away
You're sued for divorce
Your brother gets locked up
Tap your troubles away
You're fat as a horse
And find that you're knocked up
When you need something
To turn your mind off
Why not try tapping your poor behind off?
Your boat goes over the falls
The plane you're on stalls
The pilot yells, "Pray!"
When your parachute strap
I
s beginning to snap
Smile a big smile
And tap, tap, tap your troubles away
When the wolf's at your door
There's a bluebird in store
If you glide across the floor
Till your ankles get sore
Just tap your troubles away
Your troubles away

When Brits sing they lose all their accents, and sound like Americans. IMO, Julie Andrews doesn't have much of a British accent either when she sings in "The Sound of Music". The same even goes for singing performances in "Oliver Twist" too - well, to some degree only. For that, we're dealing with the depiction of some real street hustlers in London.
IMO it might say something about the advantage of the North American English accent.... See more When Brits sing they lose all their accents, and sound like Americans. So Long Dearie (Barbra Streisand)
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye
Don't try to stop me, Horace
Please ...
Wave your little hand and whisper, "So long dearie
"
You ain't gonna see me anymore
And when you discover that your life is dreary
Don't you come a-knockin' at my door
'Cause I'll be all dolled up and singin' that song
That says, "You dog, I told you so"
So wave your little hand and whisper, "So long dearie
"
Dearie, should have said so long, so long ago
Because you've treated me so rotten and rough
I have had enough of feelin' low
So wave your little hand and whisper, "So long dearie"
Dearie, should've said so long, so long ago
For I can hear that choo-choo callin' me on
To a fancy new address
Yes, I can hear that choo-choo callin' me on
Onboard that Happiness Express
I'm gonna learn to dance and drink and smoke a cigarette
I'm going as far away from Yonkers as a girl can get
So ...
And on those cold winter nights, Horace
You can snuggle up to your cash register
It's a little lumpy, but it rings
Don't come a-knockin'
I'll be all dolled up and singin' that song
That says, "You dog, I told you so"
So Horace, you will find your life a sad old story
You'll be livin' in that lonesome territory
When you see your Dolly shuffle off to glory
Oh, I should've said so long
How could I have been wrong?
Oh, I should have said so long
So long ago ▲ Collapse | | | wherestip যুক্তরাষ্ট্র Local time: 14:28 চাইনিজ/চিনা থেকে ইংরেজি + ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_de_los_Angeles
Victoria de los Ángeles (1 November 1923 – 15 January 2005) was a Spanish Catalan operatic lyric soprano and recitalist whose career began after the Second World War and reached its height in the years from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. Her obituary in The Times (London) noted that she must be counted “among the finest singers of the second half of the 20th century". James Hinton, Jr., in Opera magazine (London), June 1954, praised her "meltingly lovely middle voice". Elizabeth Forbes, writing in The Independent on 17 January 2005, also noted that "It is impossible to imagine a more purely beautiful voice than that of Victoria de los Ángeles at the height of her career in the 1950s and early 1960s". She was ranked number 3, after Maria Callas and Dame Joan Sutherland, in the BBC Music Magazine's List of The Top Twenty Sopranos Of All Time (2007)
She was regarded as one of the most beautiful soprano voices when I was growing up.
