Depends on how you work, I suppose Jun 7, 2016

However, I don't think being uncontactable by phone is necessarily a good solution.

I prefer all my clients to contact me by email. If they want to phone me, then I'll personally give them my phone number. But I stress that it's for urgent calls only, for example if I don't respond to an urgent email.

I find a ringing phone just about the worst thing imaginable for breaking my concentration. My husband has always played his guitar in the next room and now he even has a metal-working lathe installed in his workroom aka my office! Strangely enough, even that hullabaloo doesn't break my concentration. But a knock at the door or the phone ringing and that's that - inspiration gone in a puff of smoke! Then there's the problem of time differences. I certainly don't want to be roused in the middle of the night for some translation query, just because the client forgot I was on the other side of the world. But I suppose it might be useful for some people to be contactable by phone by complete strangers.

The important thing is to report every incident. It is a criminal offence, after all.
Absolutely!

Your phone is still available Jun 7, 2016

My phone number is not visible on my Proz.com profile, but one of our members got in touch with me the other day to say that he (the forum member) had kindly checked and found that my phone number was viewable on another translation website. I have now de-registered from that website, and another where I found my number.

If the sequence "3663" is part of your phone number, deleting that profile from TC was not enough. Though the profile is not there any more, the first hit on a Google search with "Elizabeth Tamblin phone" shows it. It is still stored in the Google cache.

In the now distant days of the BBS that preceded the Internet, I witnessed some events that convinced me of the importance of being a bit harder to find online than in real life. So I adopted a pseudonym - name and surname - that would be distinctive enough, however sufficiently untraceable.

I just checked it on Google, apparently there are 33 people with this name, most in the USA, and none in Brazil, which suits me well. So I have been using this name occasionally, when I am required to provide "a name" which I know that will not be used for any good purpose.

Nowadays too many companies scout the web for information they can sell, especially personal data. Making a long story short, anyone using Gmail - including my wife! - to send a message to my e-mail will have that e-name I "invented" for myself automatically filled in. No chance is given to alter it.

Big Brother is there...

My suggestion Jun 7, 2016

Or was his first intention to make an obscene call to you?

I don't get it.

If he wanted to scam you, he would have made a job offer which would be too good to be true.
But if he wanted to enjoy making obscene calls, why would he waste ten minutes of his and your precious time? Or was it something said over the phone that made him horny?

As to your phone number, maybe you might be registered at other translation site/portals where you phone number is visible to visitors. Or maybe someone with whom you worked before since he knows that you're registered on Proz.

A complete mystery.

I wasn't sure where to put my post, so I chose the Scam section.

I'm sure I didn't say anything suggestive, unless he's someone who gets turned on by talking about translation.

After reading Jose's post, I got a bit scary and his post reminded me of a she-pervert who got my phone number from another translation site where I was registered at.

In your case, as I pointed out in my first post, you had your phone number visible to vistors on another translation site/portal. That's where he got it, most probably.

I would suggest that you delete the phone number from other sites if you can remember making visible to visitors (which I know you've already done, but to make sure) and if you want a legitimate business-related phone, use your cell phone number. That should do the trick. In my case, when this she-pervert called me a three times using three different phone numbers, one from a land line and two from different cell phones, I blocked these numbers immediately. I don't know if you have a cell phone and if yours has this function, but it's worth a try. And do not try to take phone calls with no caller IDs. My cell phone has this function which will automatically block calls from no caller IDs.

That sequence isn't part of my number. I'm intrigued, though, as when I tried the same Google search, I didn't get anything that came up with a number.

Thanks for letting us know.

This shows that it wasn't a one-off - he's targeting translators for some reason.
