Hi, I am the author and editor of a travel guide about the Algarve/Portugal. A first English translation of this book was published in 2022. In the meantime, I have revised the German original and would like to transfer it into the English version.

The changes in the source documents are not that much. Here one address comes out and two come in etc. etc.
What procedure would you suggest?

Translation memory Oct 3, 2024

1. Use the bilingual files to create a translation memory (give the TM a name)
2. Import the current German Word documents (one by one) and connect it to/attach it to the translation memory from step 1
3. The translation memory will process it automatically showing you 100% matches (that you will skip) and less than 100% ones that you will edit and change. Then repeat the same with the next German Word file, etc. You can export the edited target files for English, one by one.

X-Translate Oct 3, 2024

X-Translate is method that works very well if you have an update to the original document. Re-import the updated document, and perform X-Translate.

There are some conditions required for X-Translate to work, and I am not sure of the exact requirements. I make sure that the file name for the updated file is the same as the original, re-imported as mid-project update. I use this all the time and it works great!

I'd suggest to charge a native English translator with the task. They know how to handle it.

The one who told you that doesn't seem to know how to use the tool. CAT tools (the "translation memory method") are specifically designed for cases like yours.

This:
