I like camping but during autumn and winter, when there are no more mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies around.

I adore it. Every year I go on a 5-day family camping trip, and apart from that I go a few times a year on 2-day hiking trips. | | | | Sebastian Witte জার্মানি Local time: 23:09 2004 থেকে সদস্য ইংরেজি থেকে জার্মান + ...
In my late twenties or very early thirties, I once cycled from NRW to the Weserbergland and then along the River Weser to where the Rivers Werra and Fulda meet to form the River Weser in a small town with 700 half-timbered houses near the "border" to Hesse. I stayed in my North American-made tent purchased during my travels in dedicated campgrounds dotted along the way, once actually during a fierce nocturnal lightning storm, in a campsite stretching out between the rivers.

See more My parents had a blue VW T2 camper van (Westfalia trim) with an air-cooled petrol boxer engine and rear-wheeled drive, and we used to visit countries in Europe or other French regions during the summer holidays, sleeping in the van wherever we stopped. A decade of summer holidays, from Scotland (1976, one year before the silver jubilee of Queen Elizabeth) and Belgium to Sicily and Portugal. At the time, there weren't that many regulations about where you could park and spend the night. We even went to Paris to see a musical and slept in there.
We learned from an early age to pack the needful only, brush our teeth with one small glass of water and keep our stop spots spotlessly litter-free. The setting was luxurious: 12V backup battery to power the indoor (weak) lighting, manual pump on the sink to draw water from the onboard tank, 4 sleeping spaces (one suspended width-wise above the front seats and wheel), 10-liter rubber pressurized container for shower (outdoors), gas cooker and fridge, chemical toilet (to be used sparingly) and a folding bicycle to go errands.
Then the van was passed on to our generation, tents were thrown in to increase sleeping space, and she went on around France during holidays, by the sea, in cities or in mountains. It got more difficult to spend a night outside a campsite without being told off by officials.
The camper van is still being used in the family 52 years on. She and her sound never go unnoticed.
That being said, last time I went camping (in a camping ground, not couch surfing at friends') was about eight years ago by the Mediterranean. Too much to do, too little time.

When I was a kid, we used to travel in the family motorhome (restored by my father and uncle, it was a Mercedes-Benz 911) to see Turismo Carretera races during weekends.

Some 20 years ago, the family sold "Marta," and some time later we came to know that it sadly burned up. ▲ Collapse | | |

1st time
Many years ago, at a time when money was very tight, I decided to go camping in the Algarve with my children. So, I spent money on buying a tent and some essential equipment, and we set up the tent for the night on what seemed a pleasant spot overlooking the beach, without realising that we had pitched it right over a rabbit burrow. During the night, the rabbits made a lot of noise because they wanted to get into their home. My son, who loved scaring his sisters, decided to make up a spooky ghost story. My camping holiday ended in tears the next day!
2nd time
A few years later, some friends of mine decided to go camping in Andorra and asked me if I wanted to go with them. My children were on holiday with my mother and, as I had never used the tent again, I accepted. After a bumpy journey in a small car, we crossed Portugal and Spain in suffocating heat. We arrived in the evening, the sky threatened rain, but nothing could have prepared us for what happened: suddenly it started to rain heavily and the intense rain devastated the campsite where we were staying. No one died, but some trees were uprooted.
So, there will be no 3rd time… ▲ Collapse | | | | | No, I do not honestly! | Aug 30, 2025 |
