I offer these services Aug 26, 2025

How sad that a site dedicated to translation and translators keeps confusing proofreading and editing, as if they were synonyms... Not to mention the lack of revision that is evident in the Quick Polls, which makes some of them unclear in their wording!

In any case, I offer these services. For example, I work with some agencies that, after putting my translation into PDF format, ask me to proofread it. For other agencies, I’m only the editor...

Re skipping Aug 26, 2025

What does this verb supposed to mean here? Proofreading is what I do with my own translations; this is a fast-paced process but I always find something to correct if the document is halfway big. And yes, sometimes I have to skip it if the deadline is too tight. Editing is (one way to call) what I do with other people's translations. In-house only; there's no way I'd take on an editing job as a freelancer because I imagine the kind of quality I'd have to deal with. If a document is ever sent to a... See more
What does this verb supposed to mean here? Proofreading is what I do with my own translations; this is a fast-paced process but I always find something to correct if the document is halfway big. And yes, sometimes I have to skip it if the deadline is too tight. Editing is (one way to call) what I do with other people's translations. In-house only; there's no way I'd take on an editing job as a freelancer because I imagine the kind of quality I'd have to deal with. If a document is ever sent to an editor, it almost certainly means the translation is a piece of failure. The editor gets all the pain for half the money. MTPE is also what I'd never do as a freelancer. Just finished a 120-page job about marine engines, and guess what, the final output did not even remotely resemble what the machine had written. It didn't even know how to put words in forms I wanted to see, so even collocations could not be left without changes. I think the English was written by Germans or machine-translated from German, so the job may well have been a double MT case. I'm sure there are other (lucky) people whose experience has been different. But what does skipping mean in this context? Giving up on this type of work? But how does skipping limit my work? I usually do understand questions written in bad English, but this one is puzzlingCollapse

I think I understand it now Aug 26, 2025

I just failed to put myself in a freelancer's shoes. I have an order flow from an agency, and I only accept translation jobs but skip all others, and the agency begins to send me less work over time
