Some sites (e.g. Linguee.com) are a lot more usable with an ad blocker. It would be great if we could somehow activate an ad blocker inside memoQ web search.

I therefore just created an idea on the memoQ Ideas Portal for an ad blocker in memoQ web search. Please upvote if you would find this useful!

Shouldn't using a HOSTS file also work?

This should block ads system wide, doesn't matter in what program you're on. Hence why I'm not too concerned about Google's Manifest V3.

P.S.
Don't forget to flush your DNS cache afterwards.

NextDNS Feb 9, 2023

You could also use a service like NextDNS (https://nextdns.io/), which allows you to block ads and trackers over your entire network and even on mobile devices that you use outside of your home network.

FYI regarding NextDNS:

No, I'm not dissing your suggestion. My sole intention is to remind people that trust is very prone to betrayal. Remember about EarthVPN and HMA which sold out their users to the feds? Just be mindful when you are using any server-side products like alternative DNS resolvers or VPN services, since you have no control over how they operate.

Alternative DNS resolvers also won't work if your ISP or government exercises DNS poisoning attacks on their customers/people, by the way.

Thanks guys! Feb 10, 2023

I tried the hosts file idea, but it messed up my computer. My computer had trouble at the next startup, so I had to delete the file and restart. Probably did something wrong.

I'd prefer just being able to use a Chrome ad blocker, or some other solution by memoQ, as this would be easier for the average user.

Michael

That’s very unfortunate. Sorry to hear that. I use Steven Black’s unified HOSTS file myself, and it is working perfectly fine on my end.

Just out of curiosity, though. If you tried one of Steven Black’s HOSTS files that I suggested above, did you download it using the raw link? FYI, that’s the correct way to download codes from GitHub.

Damn, I feel kinda bad now. I should've told you to do a dry run inside an isolated VM before deploying it on your work machine. But I've got to admit, I can't profess to know how a HOSTS file managed to brick an entire system. If this was misconfigured, the worst that could happen is that you won't be able to make a connection to the internet or any remote servers. Regardless, I'm really sorry about that.

Don't worry, I mess up my Windows many, many times a year. Usually my own fault.

It wasn't terrible, just when I started up, most apps didn't load, and PC sluggish. I booted into safe mode (without internet) and deleted the new hosts file and changed the renamed hosts.BAK back to normal, and restarted.

Yes, I downloaded one of Steven Black’s unified HOSTS files from the raw link. It was like 6MB. I wonder if my antivirus was the culprit here. Maybe scanning the new hosts file or something.
