REPORT OF THE GREATER LONDON REGION UNISON DELEGATION TO BANGLADESH NOVEMBER 2005
FOREWORDS
Greater London Region UNISON
I am very pleased to commend to you this report of our delegation to Bangladesh in November 2005.
The visit was a significant step in taking UNISON’s international work into a part of the world that perhaps has been overlooked by our movement. We hope that we are putting matters right by demonstrating, through this project that we recognise the diversity of our membership and the communities in which they live, and that UNISON is working to reflect their concerns and perspectives.
The delegation’s report, and the actions they propose, shows that UNISON, and unions, are relevant both in Bangladesh and to the Bangladeshi community in the UK. If you are not yet a member of your union, now is a good moment to join. If you work in the public services then UNISON is the place for you: we would welcome your application using the form at the back of this report.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many colleagues in our sister unions in Bangladesh who welcomed and supported our delegation. Without them this report would not have been possible.

War on Want was very pleased to take part in the joint delegation to Bangladesh with Greater London Region UNISON, and I am delighted to provide a foreword for this report. As well as providing a record of the delegation visit, the report offers an excellent account of the situation facing trade unionists and public services in Bangladesh. War on Want endorses the report's recommendations and congratulates Greater London Region UNISON on its continuing work.
War on Want has worked for many years in solidarity with workers and trade unionists in Bangladesh. We have an ongoing programme in partnership with the National Garment Workers' Federation, supporting them in their struggle for basic rights and improved conditions in the garment and textile factories of Bangladesh. We also support rural workers through the Bangladesh Agricultural Farm Labour Federation, which works to build the capacity of landless agricultural workers to organise and to provide them with the literacy skills needed to improve their working conditions. ২০০৫ সালের নভেম্বর মাসে বাংলাদেশে আগত আমাদের প্রতিনিধি দলের এ প্রতিবেদন আপনাদের কাছে পেশ করতে পেরে আমি অত্যন্ত আনন্দিত৷
আমাদের আন্দোলনে সম্ভবত উপেক্ষিত হয়েছে- পৃথিবীর এমন এলাকায় ইউনিসনের আন্তর্জাতিক কাজকে নিয়ে যাওয়ার ক্ষেত্রে এ পরিদর্শন ছিল গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদক্ষেপ৷ আমরা মনে করি আমরা যে আমাদের সদস্যদের ও তারা যে সম্প্রদায়ে বসবাস করে তার বৈচিত্র্যকে স্বীকৃতি দেই এবং তাদের উদ্বেগ ও দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিকে প্রতিফলিত করার জন্যই কাজ করে যাচ্ছি তা এ প্রতিবেদনের মাধ্যমে প্রদর্শন করে সঠিক কাজটিই করেছি৷
প্রতিনিধি দলের প্রতিবেদন এবং তারা যেসব পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণের প্রস্তাব করে তাতে দেখা যায় যে, ইউনিসন ও ইউনিয়নগুলো বাংলাদেশ ও যুক্তরাজ্যের বাংলাদেশী সম্প্রদায় উভয়ের ক্ষেত্রেই প্রাসঙ্গিক৷ আপনার ইউনিয়নের আপনি সদস্য না হয়ে থাকলে সদস্য হওয়ার এখনই ভালো সময়৷ আপনি যদি সরকারি সেবা প্রতিষ্ঠানে কাজ করে থাকেন, তাহলে ইউনিসন আপনারই জায়গা৷ এ প্রতিবেদনের পেছনের ফর্ম ব্যবহার করে আপনি আবেদন করলে তা আমরা সাদরে গ্রহণ করব৷
সবশেষে, বাংলাদেশে আমাদের সহযোগী ইউনিয়নগুলোতে কর্মরত আমাদের সহকর্মীদের আমি ধন্যবাদ জানাতে চাই৷ তারা আমাদের স্বাগত জানিয়েছেন ও আমাদের প্রতিনিধি দলকে সহযোগিতা করেছেন৷ তাদের ছাড়া এ প্রতিবেদন তৈরি করা সম্ভব হতো না৷

বৃহত্তর লন্ডন অঞ্চল ইউনিসনের সঙ্গে বাংলাদেশে যৌথ প্রতিনিধি দলে অংশগ্রহণ করতে পেরে ওয়ার অন ওয়ান্ট খুবই সন্তুষ্ট এবং এই প্রতিবেদনের একটি মুখবন্ধ লিখতে পেরে আমি আনন্দিত৷ প্রতিনিধি দলের পরিদর্শনের একটি বিবরণ প্রদানের পাশাপাশি প্রতিবেদনটি বাংলাদেশের ট্রেড ইউনিয়নবাদী ও সরকারি সেবা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো যে পরিস্থিতির সম্মুখীন, তার চমত্কার বিবরণও প্রদান করে থাকে৷ ওয়ার অন ওয়ান্ট প্রতিবেদনের সুপারিশসমূহ অনুমোদন করে এবং বৃহত্তর লন্ডন অঞ্চল ইউনিসনকে তার কাজ অব্যাহত রাখার জন্য ধন্যবাদ জানায়৷
ওয়ার অন ওয়ান্ট অনেক বছর বাংলাদেশের শ্রমিক ও ট্রেড ইউনিয়নবাদীদের সঙ্গে সংহতি প্রকাশ করে কাজ করেছে৷ বাংলাদেশের পোশাক ও টেক্সটাইল কারখানাগুলোতে তাদের মৌলিক অধিকার আদায় ও পরিবেশের মানোন্নয়নের জন্য তাদের সংগ্রামকে সহযোগিতা করতে জাতীয় পোশাক শ্রমিক ফেডারেশনের সঙ্গে অংশীদারীত্বের ভিত্তিতে আমাদের এক অব্যাহত কর্মসূচি রয়েছে৷ বাংলাদেশ কৃষি খামার শ্রমিক ফেডারেশনের মাধ্যমে আমরা প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলের কৃষি শ্রমিকদেরও সহযোগিতা করে থাকি৷ শ্রমিকদের কাজের পরিবেশের মানোন্নয়নের জন্য তাদেরকে প্রয়োজনীয় সাক্ষরতা দক্ষতা প্রদানের ব্যবস্থা করতে ভূমিহীন কৃষি শ্রমিকদের সামর্থ্য তৈরিতে বাংলাদেশ কৃষি খামার শ্রমিক ফেডারেশন কাজ করে৷ এসব অংশীদারিত্ব ও ওয়ার অন ওয়ান্টসের অন্যান্য কাজ সম্পর্কে আরো বেশি তথ্য পাওয়া যাবে www.waronwant.org ঠিকানায়৷
