Source text - English The agents as defined above are useful for clonally deleting activated T cells in an antigen specific manner, either in vitro or in vivo, by induction of T cell apoptosis. In one embodiment, an activated T cell is contacted in vitro with a first agent that stimulates the T cell through the TCR/CD3 complex and a second agent, the agent as mentioned above, which crosslinks an epitope on CTLA4 and induces apoptosis in the T cell. Alternatively, the second agent is administered to a subject, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, to induce T cell apoptosis in vivo in the subject. A preferred second agent is an anti-CTLA4 antibody of the invention. In addition to inducing apoptosis through a CTLA4-mediated pathway, one or more additional agents can be administered to a subject to inhibit delivery of stimulatory signals to T cells. For example, an agent which inhibits the production or function of a T cell growth factor(s) in the subject, such as an anti-IL-2 receptor antibody, an anti-IL-2 antibody or cyclosporin A, may also be administered to the subject. Alternatively or additionally, another agent which inhibits delivery of a costimulatory signal to T cells, such as a molecule (e.g., antibody or soluble fusion protein) which inhibits an interaction between CD28 and B7-1 and/or B7-2, may also be administered in conjunction with an agent which induces T cell apoptosis.

Source text - English Endocrine secretions of pancreatic islets are regulated by complex control mechanisms driven not only by blood-borne metabolites such as glucose, amino acids, and catecholamines, but also by local paracrine influences. The major pancreatic islet hormones, glucagon, insulin and somatostatin, interact with specific pancreatic cell types (A, B, and D cells, respectively) to modulate the secretory response. Although insulin secretion is predominantly controlled by blood glucose levels, somatostatin inhibits glucose-mediated insulin secretion.
The human hormone glucagon is a 29-amino acid hormone produced in pancreatic A-cells. The hormone belongs to a multi-gene family of structurally related peptides that include secretin, gastric inhibitory peptide, vasoactive intestinal peptide and glicentin. These peptides variously regulate carbohydrate metabolism, gastrointestinal motility and secretory processing. However, the principal recognized actions of pancreatic glucagon are to promote hepatic glycogenolysis and glyconeogenesis, resulting in an elevation of blood sugar levels. In this regard, the actions of glucagon are counter regulatory to those of insulin and may contribute to the hyperglycemia that accompanies Diabetes mellitus (Lund, P.K., et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A., 79:345-349 (1982)).
When glucagon binds to its receptor on insulin producing cells, cAMP production increases which in turn stimulates insulin expression (Korman, L.Y., et al., Diabetes, 34:717-722 (1985)). Moreover, high levels of insulin down-regulate glucagon synthesis by a feedback inhibition mechanism (Ganong, W.F., Review of Medical Physiology, Lange Publications, Los Altos, California, p. 273 (1979)). Born in Belgium, I was raised in French and Dutch at home but received all my academic training in French, English and Spanish. At the end of secondary education, I spent one year in the Midwest (Chicago area) of the United States, attending classes in Lake Forest High School. Afterwards, I got my B. Sc. Degree in Biology from the Université Catholique de Louvain (Catholic University of Louvain) at Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium).
I next moved to Spain, where I arrived in February 1991, and embarked on a PhD in Biology at the Universidad de Salamanca (University of Salamanca). After this, I spent almost 10 years as an assistant lecturer at the School of Medicine of the same university, teaching Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
In 2000 I started making use of my abilities as a translator, translating patents for a couple of agencies both in Spain and abroad, mainly from English into Spanish or French. What started as a side activity became soon my main source of income, so I left teaching to dedicate fully to translating.
A couple of years ago, I began to extend my services to interpreting and improved my skills in consecutive and simultaneous interpreting attending the X Master in Conference Interpreting at the Spanish Institute CLUNY-ISEIT associated to the French private university Institut Catholique de Paris. I graduated in June 2009 for the triple combination English-Spanish-French. I also do interpret between these languages and Dutch, but only as a liaison interpreter.
