If they are not very old, that is, if they are children, "The Child's History of England" by Charles Dickens (yes, the same famous novelist of Nickolas Nickelby (and many others) fame) may be tried. It is quite well written and summarizes the history of England from the earliest times to about mid 18 century. It is not short, though, as it runs to about 500 pages. Liliana Ayllon wrote: Easy to download and run! I have just tried some classics! Thanks! I was able to find in that collection many books that I had always wanted to read but could not lay my hands on, particularly American classics. We have a good network of British libraries in India which stock exclusively British literature, but American books are hard to come by. I downloaded the entire set of Tarzan books from the list which I had always wanted to read as a boy but could not as they were not available in India. Now at forty-five I am reading through the series at the rate of one book a week, in competition with my thirteen year old daughter! The only regret of both of us is that the full set of all the 27 Tarzan books is not there. I have also downloaded all the Charles Dickens novels in the list.
