I have had a fairly consistent flow of work throughout most of my translation career. It's been up and down this year for reasons relating both to me (I took a lot of time out to study recently) and to the market in general (I think a lot of translators have been experiencing inconsistent work flow this year).

This year is very inconsistent, unlike the past years.

Looking at the list of areas you specialise in (on your profile page), I'd be a little afraid you might be affected by advances in MT/AI.

I read your reply very carefully. However, I have no talent whatsoever for anything that you suggested.
Moreover, others have done it already. Guess they had the talent for it.
Me... I just gave those tips away for free.

She is NOT OK. She hasn't been OK since the beginning of September 2022. Which is why me working in-house or having a regular job from 9 to 5 is problematic. No employer would have kept me with the number of days I would have had to miss because of what we have been through until now.

I am not affected yet, will see what happens in the future. The latest NDA I signed (which didn't bring me any work, unfortunately, but I found this out after I signed it) forbids me from using MT/AI.

You've got a lot to learn from the likes of David Brent and Tess Whitty... 'Knowledge is power', don't you know that? It's a crying shame (and actually a crime) to give useful tips for free! People are ready and willing to pay top dollar for such info in the name of CPD! (aren't you familiar with the term "shut up and take my money"?)
It doesn't take 'talent' to pull that stuff, it just requires some initiative on your part. Start small by posting bland and commonsensical posts every Monday on this forum and call it 'Monday discussions'. Yes, you'll get the usual prigs and killjoys who'll complain and remind you of the site rules etc., but don't let this discourage you! There're also good people here who live by the motto "live and let live", so you're among friends there. The main thing is keep going in the face of such opposition and challenges and never give in! Talent or no talent, you'll get there. You can't put a good man (or woman) down. Remember, Beethoven had his critics too, see if anyone can name three of them!

I don't intend to organize any online classes or create and share any video material that would require me to show my face.

One of the things (actually the only thing) I enjoyed at the height of Covid was the anonymity offered by the face masks. Granted they were uncomfortable to wear, but at least you could walk down the park without having the fear of stepping into the frame of another person's personal photography/movie project and getting your image uploaded to someone else's Facebook or Youtube channel. Because the ****s must film every mundane moment of their awesome lives with their iphone 14s (which btw cost twice as much here than it does in Europe with the addition of countless taxes) and you must be an extra, a background character featuring alongside their kids, street cats, flowers etc. I had no issues with that when my face was covered, but now that the face masks are a thing of the past, it irks me to turn my face every time somebody takes a picture (and they do it all the time, sometimes 3 or 4 of them from various directions at the same time so it's virtually impossible to avoid making an appearance in the social media feed of one of them). It seems like we just didn't know how good we got it 25 years when 'mobile phones' were just meant to be communication devices, not filming equipment.

Why not?

I sympathise deeply with your situation, but you don't seem willing to take anyone's suggestions on board.

I think this is not new, but... Oct 9, 2023

I vaguely remember that a colleague based in France offered you a job here, but if I'm not mistaken, you turned it down or that colleague couldn't help because of VAT.
The question is: Can work through fellow translators be a choice for you? Do they need to be based in Romania to avoid those VAT issues, whatever these are?
On the other hand, in one of your many threads some members have already offered you some solutions, tips and good advice, but it seems that nothing is suitable.... See more

Also, I remember suggesting you before to look into technical writing, which is one of the areas that has been in high demand for some years now.
How about transcription? You can always work from home and provide assistance and care to your daughter.
Life is not easy for anyone, and I sympathise with your situation.
My best advice for you: don't trust words, trust actions.

You seem to be very picky for someone in a terrible and desperate life situation, TBH. You also start the same kind of threads over and over again, at regular intervals, just parroting things and screaming for help that you then regularly turn down. It really appears like some kind of absurdity show.

OK, I can understand that someone may have camera anxiety, but you also turned down all other suggestions posted here and on your other threads.

FIY, having together "consistency of work" and "flexibility of schedule" is going against the basic laws of physics.

This is just a well-intended post as you seem to be spinning in circles. I am not even sure how one person is allowed to open the same kind of thread 200 times.

I already did, just didn't openly write about it.

The fact that it seems I am not considering or applying people's suggestions doesn't mean I truly do nothing.

I didn't turn anything down, but it's true that I do not hold an international tax code. I've explained why elsewhere.
The fact that it seems I am not considering or applying people's suggestions doesn't mean I truly do nothing. I just didn't publicly detail what I tried/did so far.

How rude and how judgemental Oct 10, 2023

Can you imagine any other reasons to stay out of people's view other than "camera shy" or "anxiety?" I can, and due to some personal exchange I know that being shy is not the reason.

Unfortunately, I can't be of any help for someone in Romania working in her pair.

I've been cyber-bullied several times and had my bank details exposed without my consent. I've asked the Police for help but it was out of their jurisdiction. I also informed my bank right away and warned them to keep an eye on any suspicious transaction. Yesterday I blocked a "fellow Romanian translator" who had been harassing me.

People truly misuse and abuse the highly appraised freedom of speech nowadays.
