I have just discovered that even my proz hosting e-mail is now being targeted by all sorts of spam messages (people trying to sell me all sorts of strange things). This is indeed strange given that few people (just a couple of select clients) have my hosting ID and I do not advertise that ID at all.
Any idea how people get this id? It is strange as I have not given it on my site or in my profile.
How can I avoid receiving this sort of e-mail?
Thanks for your advice.

Filter Mar 10, 2008

The easiest, and best way is to set up an email account with a professional web host. They do not want spam to pass through their system so they use good spam filters.

Virus filter is normally also included.

Personally I receive very few spam messages, but I receive emails from "regular" people, clients etc.

Same with me... Mar 10, 2008

I have seen a sudden increase in the spam amount in my ProZ mailbox about a week ago. Is it possible that the mail database has been leaked somehow?

This morning I received a staggering number of spam messages: 452 and later in the dy another 103 messages.
I sent a support ticket asking them whether they have a paid option of spam block filtering and will report their answer here.
The "reliable" web service providers mentioned in one of the posts above charge about $10 per month and I am ready to pay it to Proz, if they will rid me of the spam. Now with their Spam Assassin all I get is that the spam messages come to me marked ***SPAM*** which is just not good enough.

It stopped as unexpectedly as it started Apr 27, 2008

It started on Monday and stopped on Monday a week later. During that week I got about a thousand or more spam messages mostly from mailer-daemons and post delivery systems claiming failed or delayed delivery of messages allegedly sent by me.

Now I learnt that in answer to my request for support Proz Support killed them by changing my default address to ':blackhole:'
I confirm that it did the trick and this sort of mail messages stopped coming in.

After you do this your hosting account should automatically take care of removing these messages, along with any other that is not specifically addressed to your exact email address.

This should greatly reduce the frequency at which you see this type of message, if not wipe them out entirely.

To do this:
1) Log into your cpanel interface.
2) Click the mail icon.
3) Click 'Default Address'.
4) Click 'Set Default Address'.
5) Enter ':blackhole:' into the form and click 'Change'.

I hope it may be useful to someone.
Alex
