And that's because I forgot to bill the client. I might do so later, and I might not bother. The job was for a new client who I met on the flight back to Spain after the New Year.
Only one (should I say none?) | Aug 12, 2021 |
This year I had only one late payment issue but coincidentally the client paid this week (almost 6 months late).

28½ years, one unpaid job, for less than $50. It's not luck, and it's not the Blue Board. If an unknown agency from a country that speaks neither your source nor your target language contacts you out of the blue to translate 5,000 words overnight, there is a rat to be smelt.

I had to send a few reminders about late payments, but they were all made soon enough after that. One client still owes me the significant amount of EUR 0.20 because they didn't calculate the VAT correctly. I agreed to leave it to the next invoice, whenever it may be.

None. They all pay. Some were late but it's okay.

In 20+ years of translation I've only had 3 unpaid jobs. I remember them all.
Most of my clients now have automated systems. Once, many years ago, a reputable client owed me more USD 9,000. Another went out of business before I got around to invoicing them. Another time a scammer gave me a bad check in advance, but I was suspicious and took the check to the bank, where they confirmed that it was no good. Other than that, I've been pretty lucky.

I was scammed very early in my career so I watch for the signs and look at the Blue Board. I think I have one small invoice that may be unpaid at the moment but I need to check and chase it up if necessary.

A Canadian client, whom I've worked with before and was truly happy with, ordered a translation, then simply disappeared. All attempts to contact them failed. It was a rather small amount in USD, so I just let them get away with it instead of wasting my time trying to chase them down. I hope they're happy with a free translation.

I had one job which I forgot about and sent the invoice to the agency. They paid within a month, but I'll never work with them again! They want me to share 50% of the transfer fees.
The last time I remained unpaid was 20 years ago or more.

For the current tax year, I have 3 invoices awaiting payment plus 1 that is seriously overdue, despite the agency's promise that it would be paid this week (it was already late). I fear the agency has now gone on holiday for the summer, which means I probably won't get paid until September. I will get paid in the end, but after that I won't be doing any more work for that agency.
