I'm using TRADOS 2014 and getting extremely frustrated. I've been trying to update my translation memories with additional translations of terms (in addition to those previously in my memories). I have managed to find the "Add as New Translation" command hidden away under the advanced ribbon in the editor view, but it is not highlighted (and cannot be selected). I am literally at wit's end.

New translation added during translation process
Aug 26, 2015
New translation is generally added as you translate the text to the TM specified in the project (make sure the Update field is ticked in the project settings). Is it not happening? Otherwise you can import your translated text into your existing TM having previously converted it (your translations) to TMX format.

Thanks

Thanks Andrei I followed your suggestion with the "Update" field, but it replaces the old translation with the new one. What I am looking for is the ability to add new translations (more interpretations of the source) rather than just replacing the old with the new.

Solved By Accident

I'm not actually sure. It involved tweaking both the project settings (the update box) and changing the translation of segments. I got it wrong about three times and then it just seemed to work (not much of an explanation I'm afraid). More generally speaking, I don't like the "Add Translation" button being hid away in the Advanced Ribbon. I reckon it should be more prominently situated. SDL could also do something to fix their HELP menus. Too confusing and too many dead ends.

Hello James, I am from SDL. There is also a keyboard shortcut for it CTRL + SHIF + U which should always add new TU provided that the updated option in the TM is ticked. What version of Studio are you using? If you are on 2014 - please make sure you are on the latest update / Service Pack 2 and installed any CU we have released.
Kind regards Massi

This button has been moved in Studio 2015 to the drop down options under "confirm". A much better place.

I agree that this issue was hard to find in the Help files. Another search option for exact matches (with quotes) would be useful in addition to any or all words.
By the way, one reason why this feature doesn't appear to work is that people sometimes confirm the segment and then think they would like to add it as a new translation. By that time you will have overwritten the original translation unit in the TM. In other words, you have to use "Add as new translation" before you confirm the segment.
