Because there was no option to say just plain no. I have never edited a Wikipedia article and I don't feel particularly strongly either way. I would if I felt it needed doing but I think my life would be nonetheless complete if I never did!

I'm a bit surprised that so many haven't. I have written parts of a few articles, but mostly I just do linguistic fixing and supply and format references to existing ones. Twice I have been paid to translate/write and wiki format articles.

About 12,000 edits combined between English and Japanese account.
Right now, I don't actually do much translation and instead is working on updating a series of pages. I still have about 2,000 edits to go which should take 6 months if not more at the current pace.

Probably. I vaguely recall editing (or at least attempting to) a badly drafted wikipedia page, what I don't remember is whether I managed to jump through all the hoops allowing the changes to be saved (logging in, authentication etc) ...
I reckon I most likely ended up "lost in the complex procedures" as I am not reknowned for my patience with these things.

Quite apart from work, by the time I have had my say on this site, composed a letter to the newspaper and possibly sent it, had a little exercise and thought about supper, time is getting short and I feel I ought to shut down my computer for the day.

in taking the time to submit a carefully researched article on medieval German Dominican women, my graduate specialty, and have it *corrected* by trolls who can't read modern German, let alone the medieval mss and Latin required for the topic. I watched that done to a friend's article on "Feudalism", which incorporated the research from the last 20 years. The article was "corrected" back to the state of scholarship from the 1920's. And there it stands. And the scholars get shouted down becau... but the edits were mainly concerned with typo, spelling, grammar or obvious human errors.

Many pages are badly translated, and require at least some good polish, some are badly botched, many contain translation errors of various types (and you don't always know what the original text was). I have corrected inappropriate terminology, because this poses a real problem, especially for fields that do not have much information available, and there is a danger of that misinformation being disseminated (wikipedia pages can appear on a number of sites, so if you search a specific term that o... That said, it is time consuming, so I really try to keep it to a minimum... for some pages, sometimes I just leave notes, hoping someone else wil take the time. ▲ Collapse
