Source text - English The River People Kristen James Prologue In The Fall Sits-and-Thinks, the village chief, held the salmon bones as he danced, singing low and soft. He wore a deerskin shirt and pants, adorned with shells they had bartered from coastal tribes, and painted with symbols for their clan. His hair, now gray, did not glimmer in the sunshine, but his eyes were alert and shiny with thankfulness. As she moved with the people, his daughter River-Song listened to his voice, and the soft crunch that his moccasins made on the worn river pebbles under his feet. The people danced on the riverbank behind him, voices lifted together in prayer. Chief Sits-and-Thinks held the bones above his head and the singing stopped. “Chief Salmon, return again.” No one spoke as he let Chief Salmon’s bones slip into the river to return to his home. They paused, surrounded by the morning beauty, to give honor to the fish that gave them life. Only by showing the first salmon this respect every fall would they bring the salmon back. The circle begins again, she thought. The harmony of their traditions held them together and bound them to the land. When the ceremony ended, braves went to fish, but River-Song stood beside her father, lifting her face into the weak sunshine. She would miss the sun through the winter. She loved listening to stories in the long houses during winter, but she felt so free and happy in the summer. Next year, when they traveled to the summer games at the main village, she would prove herself to Walks-with-Pumas, the big chief’s son. She would marry him next year. This summer hadn’t gone as she planned, and she hadn’t married. Many girls married after seeing fourteen summers, and this summer had been her fifteenth. But that couldn’t take away her joy at the beauty around them in their valley of winding streams. The leaves on the oak trees were changing to their fall time colors. She liked to walk through the fields of tall oat grass where it grew above her head. The summer heat had dried it yellow, and soon they would burn it along with the underbrush around their village. Hills surrounded them, rising up where the oaks blended into the ancient cedar and fir forests, canopying high above to catch the rains. “You are dancing inside.” Sits-and-Thinks turned to her and smiled, love for his daughter shining in his eyes. “Why not, father? We have so many reasons to be joyful.” She lifted her hands to the clear blue sky. “We grow in number and make a good life in our valley.” But when she saw her father’s face, her arms fell and her smile went away. “Why is there sadness in your eyes?” “I have seen many falls and springs come and go. I have lived a happy life.” “Father, you talk like the old men. You’re not half as old and wrinkled as Singing-Owl.” She could not lose her father! The village could not lose their chief! “Singing-Owl is strong. I am not. I have held my thoughts for a long time, River-Song. But your desires are pushing you to action. I want to see things completed before I walk to the Long house in the woods.” She did not speak at his sad words, but held back her tears. Tree-Song, her mother, had walked to that long house many winters ago, leaving her song knowledge and her language to River-Song. “You want to be with Tree-Song again.” She wanted to see her mother, too, who had come from their brothers over the mountain. River-Song, remembering her mother’s loving eyes, hoped she had her mother’s looks. Because her mother was from their cousin tribe, River-Song’s forehead had not been flattened as a baby. The other girls thought she was ugly, but she didn’t care. Her beauty came from her heart, just like her mother’s. “I know you don’t want to think about my death, but you are strong.” He took her by the shoulders, his eyes both stern and proud. “You can lead our village.” She understood that her father saw things in her that the other braves did not. “What does Chief Blue-Lightning think?” This chief led the four villages of their tribe, and he made decisions after seeking counsel from the three village chiefs. “You will have to prove yourself to him next summer. The games are the best way.” “No, I’ll bring the sacred token to him next year.” No one could speak against that. She failed before, but she would be ready and stronger at the games next summer. “No, daughter, you couldn’t this summer. Focus on what you can do. Use reason. Use your strengths.” He gave her a gentle shake because he could not see her expression. “This is a time of plenty. You do not need to tend to your work yet. Go welcome the salmon.” And she did, running with strong legs along the murmuring river. Her braided hair flew behind her as she jumped from boulder to boulder. She slowed and climbed the hill to look down over their village. The village by the falls was hers. They had three long houses, each with four families in them. Grandfather cedar gave them many trees for their homes. They used wedges to borrow great planks without taking the tree from the forest. Their great river gave life to the trees, and life to the fish that fed her people. She stood grateful for this, her face lifted again to the sky. The blue above and the blue of the river were both sacred to them. Chief Salmon sat on top of their totem pole, guarding the village and welcoming all. Her village had two canoes carved to look like great salmon. “I will never leave!” “Are you so sure?” Fast-Runner startled her, making River-Song realize she was too absorbed in the beauty around her. But Fast-Runner had no right to intrude on this moment. River-Song gave her friend a dirty look, but Fast-Runner didn’t seem to notice or care. “You look like you might grow wings like an eagle and take off right here.” “I am so happy, I could.” River-Song grinned into the breeze. “But I love my river too much.” They sat down and did not speak. Fast-Runner got her name from her long legs that carried her faster than others her age. Her father had many things to trade for a good marriage for her, and she weaved the best cedar jackets in the village. Fast-Runner wore a beautifully weaved jacket now, without a lining of fur because it wasn’t yet cold. River-Song never let herself grow jealous, despite all this, because they were friends. But she suspected that Fast-Runner had turned against her in the last two years. Their friendship had turned into competition over everything. During the winter, it was good that they had lived in two different long houses in their village. River-Song wished that Fast-Runner had married and moved to another village after the summer games. They both wanted to marry Walks-with-Pumas, but he had not decided. He knew he could pick any girl from the four villages, so he did not want to marry yet. Their tribe had more women than men of marrying age, and many women were worried about this. The summer games were over for this year, and next year’s would not come for a long time, so there wasn’t any reason to talk about it yet. She saw that her friend thought about it anyway. “The men discuss if you can be the new village chief.” Fast-Runner didn’t seem to care that this talk would lead to more tension between them. She should know her words were rude, but she intently watched River-Song, waiting for an answer. River-Song didn’t give her one. “You couldn’t be the village chief here in our village and marry Walks-with-Pumas.” “Why not?” River-Song knew Fast-Runner couldn’t control any of this, so she had no right to talk about it. “You would live in the main village.” “Maybe,” River-Song said, not wanting to think about choosing between being a village chief and marrying Walks-with-Pumas. Customs could be changed. There could be a way for her to do both things. She thought back to the times when she and Fast-Runner played together and didn’t worry about the future. “Isn’t it good for us that my father is village chief? I have many summers to prove that I can follow him.” “That isn’t the talk in the long house.” “What do they know?” She rose and walked upstream, trying to regain the fluttering happiness she felt earlier. New anger came over Fast-Runner’s comments. She wanted badly to marry Walks-with-Pumas, but she also wanted what would be better for her people. This is where her anger came from. If she must choose one or the other, she would choose to lead her village instead of marrying Walks-with-Pumas. She didn’t look forward to this winter. She should be married! Now she would spend the long rainy season wondering if Walks-with-Pumas wanted her or Fast-Runner, who was tall, fast, and a good weaver. And her head had been flattened so she was considered more beautiful. No, she couldn’t think of it. Besides, it was time to fish, gather acorns for crushing, and steam cedar strips for more jackets. Her father was wise and he called her strong. And so she would be. Chapter One After The Winter Lush green leaves crowded the riverbank as they journeyed south to the main village for the summer games. Her people sat in their two great canoes. While the other canoe paddled ahead, they drifted in the current. They could no longer see their long houses. River-Song had said goodbye to her home that morning, knowing it could be many days, or many moons, until she saw it again. Maybe she would be a wife when she saw it again. Or perhaps she would marry and go to a new village. Even after all winter to think about this, she did not really know what she wanted. She asked Father Salmon to guide her, as he guided all the people. Behind them, the falls disappeared around the bend, and now even its loud whispering grew faint. Though the days were not yet hot, they had swam in the pool there and slid over their falls. Sometimes the younger people jumped in as soon as winter ended to welcome the new growing season. Once one person braved the cold, churning pool under the falls, everyone met the challenge. “Ah, Brother Beaver!” Sits-and-Thinks held his arms out at the animal. River-Song heard the beaver’s tail slap as it headed under. She loved the way the river sang to them and the sound of the oars dipping into the water. She did not want to hurry her father. She understood he didn’t expect to make the trip again, though she couldn’t say why he thought this. Her people loved to laugh and tell stories, but in times like this, they were quiet in reverence to the land, to the valley full of wandering streams, and the small hills. Their sacred mountain rose high above the hills to their north, always giving them direction when they needed it. Sitting in front of River-Song, Little-Fox hugged her prized wooden toy, a smile on her chubby face. River-Song had given her the carved salmon, a toy her mother had crafted and given to her. Tree-Song had given this to River-Song as her token to help her through life. River-Song felt Little-Fox needed it even more then she did. Since she did not have a little sister, River-Song loved Little-Fox as one. The child’s eyes were as dark as the darkest bark, and looked like giant moons in her face. She seldom spoke, and many called her slow-witted for it. River-Song didn’t think Little-Fox was slow of mind, but that she thought in different ways. Little-Fox’s mother, Silent-Sparrow, never spoke. She tried to feed her daughter, but she worked slow and didn’t have other children to help. River-Song felt that, as the village chief’s daughter, she needed to look after everyone in the village. Knowing Little-Fox had a good heart, she made sure the others didn’t steal her food or force her to do their work. Fast-Runner jabbed River-Song. “Are we attacking the village? With that expression, you look like you want to put on war paint.” She turned to the girl who had once been her friend. Fast-Runner had interrupted her thoughts yet another time. While she thought of a polite answer, Quick-Salmon, one of her father’s friends, spoke. “Maybe she should.” The older man seemed pleased when everyone turned to look at him. “Much is at stake this year. I advise only the most serious to enter the competitions.” Sits-and-Thinks had, until now, gazed at the oaks lining the meandering stream, looking for blue jays. All twenty people in the long canoe waited for him to speak. But his eyes came to rest on his daughter, and she knew he agreed with Quick-Salmon. “We are going to prove ourselves, are we not?” She spoke, knowing his heart. “We compete for our village, our pride, and for good marriages. Things are changing in all four villages. If we want to keep our good standing, we must be ready.” Ever since the salmon ceremony last fall, Chief Sits-and-Thinks had looked to his daughter to speak for him on many occasions. Some accepted this. Others whispered in the long houses Red-Hawk, a brave younger then River-Song, rose up onto his knees and spoke to River-Song. “Do you speak for all of us now?” River-Song knew Beaver-Tail had put his son up to saying this. Beaver-Tail thought his son might follow as the next village chief, but he was much too young still. She hoped Beaver-Tail felt ashamed that he let his son say such things. Raven, an older woman with two daughters, sat near the back, and looked ready to speak her mind. She told people she was named for her dark, shinny hair, but they all knew she squawked like a raven in the morning. Stopping her, Sits-and-Thinks rose up, his weaved cedar jacket wrapped around him in the late spring air, and settled a solemn look on the brave. The admonishment sent everyone into silence and Chief Sits-and-Thinks went back to watching the woods around them. Since Fast-Runner sat ahead of River-Song, she could see her start to turn her head. She probably wanted to give River-Song a mean look, but she didn’t dare. Even Raven kept quiet for the rest of the journey downstream. River-Song felt grateful that she wasn’t forced to answer Red-Hawk. She had done nothing to prove her leadership. Only her father believed in her. Many men had become chiefs by proving themselves to be very strong, or wise, or they collected many possessions. Women usually did not lead, and yet Chief Sit-and-Thinks insisted that she follow him as village chief. The braids were coming loose in Little-Fox’s hair, so River-Song brushed and braided it as they floated. River-Song wore her best deerskin shirt, one her mother had worn and decorated with shells. She had made a shirt for Little-Fox during the winter when they stayed. houses Silent-Sparrow, Little Fox’s mother, sat near the back of the canoe, shoulders hunched and her eyes closed. River-Song soon recognized the bend in the river and the trees on the riverbank as the markers by the main village, and then she heard voices mixed with the breeze. “Look at all the people to greet us!” Little-Fox grinned and stood. “Doesn’t she remember last year?” Fast-Runner asked as she dipped her oar into the water, helping the others paddle the canoe to shore. Several braves paddled to the rocks at the bank. Red-Hawk jumped out and let Cleaver-Fox help him secure it. “She is young. Children get excited every year.” River-Song preferred one to show their emotion and not hide them behind rude comments. She almost told Fast-Runner this, but she also felt happy to see friends and hear all the voices. Upon landing, the village chief instructed them where to take their belongings. He did this for custom. Everyone loaded their arms with furs and weaved cedar mats that they would sleep on during the games. The village chief led the group from the canoe to the clearing where they laid down their things. Each of the three villages that came to the main village would build a night fire in the clearing, sleeping on their mats around it. They wouldn’t need more during the summer for warmth, but they built shelters for shade. The women would go together later and gather wood, but now they laid out their mats and cooking kettles. The men left quickly to find friends and family. The women soon followed, but River-Song wanted to stay there. She had dreamed many times during the winter that Walks-with-Pumas had come to her village to see her, unable to wait until the summer games. She thought often of how her life would be when they married and spent all year together. She wished she could go and look for him, but she didn’t want anyone to know how badly she wanted to see him again. She heard his laughter before she spotted him. No one laughed like Walks-with-Pumas. So while she secured their housing, she watched for him through her eyelashes. Before the summer games four years before, his father had taken him up on the sacred mountain to become a man. A puma had attacked, knocking Chief Blue-Lightning over. Walks-with-Pumas was called Fast-Walker before this happened. He fought the animal off his father, but spared its life. When they returned to their village, his father shared the story of the ferocious man-animal who walked on all fours and was built to pounce and cling to trees. It had a horrible cry and yellow eyes that would stop you from moving. The other braves asked Fast-Walker why he let this animal live, and he said the pumas were now his friends. His father gave him his new name. They’d shared the story with all the villages at the summer games. River-Song could still remember the pounding in her chest as she listened. Walks-with-Pumas stood proudly next to his father as he recounted the attack. River-Song had never before felt those feelings stir in her. But she’d recognized them instantly because her mother had told her what would happen as she grew older. She knew about marriage and feeling secret things for a man. Her heart once again pounded as his laughter grew close. “River-Song.” She turned slowly, keeping the smile from her face. “Walks-with-Pumas.” “You are a woman this year!” His black hair hung to his shoulders, his chest and arms free of shirt to shine brown in the sun. “I have been a woman for many summers now,” she said. The braves standing behind Walks-with-Pumas laughed. “And soon you will be a village chief.” He turned and left, his braves following. While she watched without emotion, her heart screamed. Did everyone expect her father to die soon? If Walks-with-Pumas would just marry her, life wouldn’t be so many conflicting choices. But if her father died, and she became village chief before she married, she might not be able to marry him. Didn’t he understand that? Maybe he understood that, and had spoken to let her know. Maybe he never planned to marry her. She returned her attention to her work, but listened as he went about camp to gather hunters. Her father approached, but she was so intent on looking busy that she didn’t hear him until he laid his hand on her shoulder. “You keep your hands busy, daughter. Many women are leaving to gather wood.” She straightened. “I’ll go. We’ll have wood to burn all night.” She ran off, thinking of the dancing and singing. She still remembered with joy the first year she was able to stay awake for all of it, chanting and dancing, listening to stories from the other villages. She skipped now, turning and throwing up her hands. “River-Song!” Graceful-Bow ran to catch her. “You have grown!” “No, cousin. I am the same size.” “You look older, then. Like a woman now.” “So I have heard. But I am still me.” She grabbed Graceful-Bow, who was the daughter of her father’s cousin, and one year older than her. “And what of you? No baby yet?” “Not yet. This winter.” She dropped her gaze to Graceful-Bow’s stomach, but it looked flat. Her cousin looked as tiny as she always had. They saw the group of women gathering to leave and walked to join them. Graceful-Bow said, “You can’t see it yet, but I can feel it.” Many others did have new children. It made River-Song wish things she hadn’t wished before. “What is the look I see in your eyes?” Her cousin looked toward her as they walked, her brown eyes amused. Everyone considered Graceful-Bow pretty. Her mother had flattened her head as a baby. She was small and moved like a deer through the forest. She could also weave well. Many men had asked to marry her, knowing she would make a good wife. “Even I want a family.” “River-Song, future village chief, wants a family?” “Why not?” When she remembered how she loved her mother, and how they had talked like sisters, she wanted to make a family, too. “I didn’t know . . .” She heard the change in Graceful-Bow’s voice and slowed her pace. The group started into the woods of Oaks, but she wanted them to talk without the others hearing. “Cousin, tell me, do you think this because of what people say about me?” “The men talk of these things often. They think you are focused on becoming a leader. No one has talked about you becoming a wife.” “Is that why Walks-with-Pumas didn’t ask to marry me last summer?” Graceful-Bow stopped. “I see now. You were friends with Fast-Runner all through your childhood, yet last summer the two of you become fierce competitors. I didn’t understand until now.” It was a painful truth that River-Song had to think about often. Her choices no longer felt like choices. “He will chose her, then. If this is better for our people, I won’t complain.” “I’m sorry, cousin.” Graceful-Bow followed her lead and began to pick up wood. “There are many skilled and beautiful women to marry this year. He talks often about having his pick.” She snorted. “Does he? What other woman will be a village chief?” “This is certain?” “Ah!” River-Song did not understand people and their two way reasoning. “If I can’t marry him, I will be a village chief. I think I could do both. I am strong.” “And as confident as Walks-with-Pumas.” Feeling her hope swell up again, River-Song declared, “So we belong together.” “If anyone can prove that kind of strength, it is you.” Since no one but Graceful-Bow watched her, River-Song smiled. Once enough wood was gathered, they piled some in their smaller camp and placed the rest in the large fire in the middle of the village. Chief Blue-Lightning sang and lit the fire while people from all four villages watched. Several hunting groups had gone out, and each brought food to be cooked. Cleaver-Fox, a boy from her village, proudly brought two rabbits. He was twelve but was respected as a hunter already. River-Song especially liked him for his happy face. The braves had killed enough food for everyone to have their fill. Singing-Owl, their medicine man, started the evening ceremonies by singing and dancing around the fire as it came to life, growing and turning deep red. She thought of her people as light in the night, like the sun and moon. “In honor we live! In reverence we walk on our Mother Earth!” He saw River-Song as he circled the fire and motioned to her. Falling behind him, she joined his dance and his song. She knew both well, as keeper of the tribe’s stories. The padding of their moccasins made patterns to their voices. She heard braves’ low voices joining the song. Chief Blue-Lightning came first to present the ceremonial masks to the dancers. The village chiefs from the three other villages brought the masks entrusted to them. More dancers joined the sacred circle to celebrate the abundance given to them. They acted out many stories with their movements. The music faded and it came time for her to chant their story. The children moved forward in the surrounding circle. Drums beat softly as she began to chant, and tell how they were brought to life. Dancers moved around the fire in the masks, acting out the story. Everyone relived it as they watched the skilled movements. When she finished the story, she joined the people sitting in the circle. Singing-Owl danced, singing of the sun embracing the earth each spring and giving them new plants. Next Walks-with-Pumas danced, his bare torso gleaming in the firelight. For once his face wasn’t amused, but solemn, and his movements fast. He didn’t sing, but let the quick drums be his music. All through the night, they danced and sang. As the fire grew small, the stars above shone down with power. She saw Walks-with-Pumas look her way often. So did Fast-Runner, but River-Song ignored her. She felt as free as the eagle on the summer wind. The night would have been her most joyful night ever, but her father never stood to dance or sing. Chapter Two The stars above them grew tired, and the fire burned down to cinders, before the people finished celebrating. Many from her own village were already sleeping when River-Song decided to return to their fire. Suddenly Walks-with-Pumas was by her side with a torch. “Are you planning to fish?” she asked, since they sometimes fished by torchlight. The fish came to see the light, but didn’t see the brave ready to spear them. “Why would I fish after we ate so much already?” He seemed to be laughing even now. “Then why do you have a torch? Are you afraid to walk in the dark?” “You say mean things.” “I know.” She smiled as she walked slowly toward her own fire, where people from her village slept, hoping he would ask her to stay with him. She’d longed many times to talk to him without his friends there to watch them and listen. “There are many things I want to say to you. I’ve thought about them all winter.” Now that she had spoken, he would sit down with her. He hesitated, and she thought he would ask to talk later, after they’d rested. Finally he spoke. “Maybe after the games we can talk.” “I don’t want to wait that long.” Why did they need to? “Now isn’t the time. I have much on my mind, besides the games, and I don’t need to talk to a woman about them.” “I’m not just a woman!” She felt scorned and wanted to hurt him in return. Her anger burned even hotter as she realized he would speak of women in such a way. “Men would live longer if they heeded what the women said.” “We would never go to war, either.” “And when have we needed to? You men hear of fighting over the mountain and want to join them. War isn’t a game.” She turned and went to her fire, laying on her mat without ever looking back at him. Her lack of sleep didn’t make River-Song weary the next day. She felt ready to compete in the footrace with the other women and younger girls. Fast-Runner had always won, and that is where she got her name. But River-Song knew she could keep up with her this year. As soon as she opened her eyes, she kept busy so she wouldn’t dwell on the night before. People sat in groups about the camp, trading pots, mats, and shells. She greeted many as she walked through. After cooking fish and gathering berries, she prepared by swimming in the cold river, while the water lay in shadows from the oak trees on the hill. “Good morning, Great River!” She stopped by its edge to rid herself of her summer clothing. “My body is made from the earth of this valley. You are my home and my namesake!” She dove deep to swim with the salmon and trout that hid near the bottom. She wanted the coldness of the water to wash the angry heat from inside her. She’d never felt anger like this before, so hot and painful. And confusing. How could she feel such love for Walks-with-Pumas one day and such anger at him the next? She felt angry with Fast-Runner, even though it hurt her to feel this way. She wanted her friend back. Not wanting to face Walks-with-Pumas, she stayed at the river a long time, drying her long hair and then braiding it. She walked back slowly. Some late spring berries still sat on the bushes, and she found a few blackberries just ripe enough to eat. The sun rose up above the trees, ending the coolness of the early morning, and she knew she needed to return if she wanted to race that day. “Daughter!” The village chief saw her. “Aren’t you running? This is probably your last year to compete.” She hoped she wouldn’t be unmarried and eligible to compete the following year. That would bring great shame to be so old and not have a husband. “I’m coming, Father.” In the last generation, more girl babies were born than boys. Some women now had to wait longer to get married because there weren’t enough husbands for everyone at the same time. She walked with her father in silence. Maybe he was thinking about all the same things. The big chief’s attitude had also changed people in their tribe. The men didn’t respect the women as they had before, but looked for wives like Graceful-Bow who wanted to sit at home and weave. River-Song could sit at home and weave, tell stories, and be happy. But her people needed someone who would keep peace in their valley. Her father had told her this, and she knew it to be true. She knew how to speak wisely to make treaties and gain the trust of tribes outside their lands. They reached the clearing and joined the other people. So far, the men wouldn’t listen to her about making alliances and trading for goods. The big chief wanted to increase their numbers, their land, and their prestige before all. River-Song sighed as she thought of this, but she didn’t speak. It was time to stand with the other runners. All the young, unmarried women stood in a line at the beginning. Everyone gathered behind them and waited in silence until Chief Blue-Lightning threw his arm out toward the path. They sprang into a run, people yelling behind them as they ran. She kept her eyes on Fast-Runner’s back, even though many women ran between them. She kept pace with Fast-Runner and let the others fall behind. She would keep up with her! They raced on the soft, new grass across the meadow and then into the forest, where they dodged this way and that to go through the trees. She ran like a salmon in the water, never faltering or losing sight of Fast-Runner. She thought of the eagle soaring on the wind as she ran. Give me strength, Father Salmon! She was strong and healthy, but her passion to prove herself pushed her even more. They ran around the lonely oak where men met to talk, and then changed direction to return to the camp. She heard others pounding the ground behind them, but not close. Twenty in all ran together to prove healthy for marriage. River-Song raced right behind Fast-Runner. Fast-Runner stumbled. “Ahh!” River-Song almost fell trying to stop beside her, then knelt down beside her friend. “Go!” Fast-Runner’s cry started River-Song, but she listened and jumped to her feet and ran into the village first. Many peopled greeted her, but she didn’t see her father yet. Little-Fox met her. “You won!” Others closed in, the murmuring already started. “Where is Fast-Runner?” Walks-with-Pumas stood by his father, his arms folded. “Do you mean Second Fastest Runner?” River-Song saw Fast-Runner coming in now, favoring one leg as she lowered her head. River-Song could tell her rival had heard the comment, and she saw how the people reacted. She wanted the win badly, but her honor wouldn’t let her remain silent. “She stepped in a hole and fell.” As the big chief’s son, Walks-with-Pumas could give someone a new name. She put aside her other emotions because she didn’t want Fast-Runner to be called by this new name. People looked to Chief Blue-Lightning. His thoughts never showed on his face, mostly because he used actions instead of words. People called him Blue-Lightning because his anger hit quickly. How glad River-Song felt that the big chief was strong and didn’t let Walks-With-Pumas make his decisions. She greatly respected Chief Blue-Lightening. But she no longer respected Walks-With-Pumas. The people waited anxiously, whispering among themselves as to what would happen. The last runner joined them, a young girl who ran to learn, not to win. Now the chief would speak. “Fast-Runner must learn to look where she runs. River-Song wins this race.” The chief turned and left, but no one dared to speak in his absence. River-Song felt thankful he had not called Fast-Runner by the name Walks-with-Pumas said. She saw Walks-with-Pumas’ eyes narrow in anger, but he didn’t react and give his anger away to anyone else. He left, joking with his friends. She looked for her father and still did not see him, so she left to look for him. He had wanted her to prove herself at these games. She couldn’t say if she did or not, but she had won the race. Little-Fox followed her at a distance, but River-Song told her to go play. Then Graceful-Bow came beside her, and it would be rude to her older cousin to try and send her away. Her cousin said, “I saw that Walks-with-Pumas favored you.” Graceful-Bow’s voice was filled with questions. “Yes, but he showed disregard for Fast-Runner.” Graceful-Bow took her arm. “So you do feel friendship for her still.” How River-Song missed her! “I didn’t mean to win. I wanted to finish with her.” “Don’t be displeased, cousin. You can’t speak and make everything as you wish, as much as you may think so.” River-Song laughed. “You’ve grown wiser in marriage.” She declined to join her cousin then to watch the men race. There weren’t as many men to run, since many were married. Walks-with-Pumas was sure to win, so River-Song climbed the hill north of the village where she could watch one section of the race. She wanted to sit and talk with Graceful-Bow, learn what her cousin thought of the tension in the tribe. Her mother would have words of wisdom about her feelings. Tree-Song had understood womanly things that her father couldn’t explain to River-Song. Why did she feel such conflicting emotions for Walks-with-Pumas? Her ears still stung with his open rebuke of Fast-Runner. That, too, confused her. Why did Fast-Runner let her run ahead and win? Perhaps Fast-Runner hadn’t wanted River-Song to see her shame. “I won’t speak of it,” River-Song said, looking down toward the village, wondering where Fast-Runner was. A bigger worry sat at the back of her thoughts, like a stormy horizon. What if the people were right, and she became village chief of her village, and didn’t marry Walks-with-Pumas? The men didn’t think it would be good for a village chief and the big chief to be married. Then the leadership wouldn’t be balanced, they said. But they were wrong. She could be the village chief of the village by the falls, and marry Walks-with-Pumas without letting him decide her mind. She would be strong for her people. There were two other village chiefs, one of the Southern Village and one of the village along the Great River, west of them. That helped to balance the leadership. But this was her old hope. In the last few days, her wishes had lifted like the morning fog. What did she want? This reminded her of the blind deer she had seen in the forest. It wandered slowly. Maybe Walks-with-Pumas would marry Fast-Runner, but River-Song wasn’t sure he would treat her well. She wasn’t even sure if he would make a good big chief. This she could tell to no one. If he became the big chief, and she became village chief, she would need his friendship. First Fast-Runner became her rival, and now Walks-with-Pumas might also be against her. How dare he! She had come to the main village to sing and dance and celebrate. She saw more men below, at the river, fishing with poles, and decided to help them bring in the fish once they caught them. She still had responsibilities to feed the tribe, even at the summer games and even as a village chief’s daughter. “We are blessed this year,” she greeted them. “Grandfather Salmon respects the big chief,” one brave said. She pushed away all her conflicting thoughts and worries. No one wanted to hear them. They brought in many fish, and then she talked with the other women and played with the children there. A woman asked her quietly, “Weren’t you friends with Fast-Runner?” River-Song knew Morning-Sky meant well. The other woman had been her friend each summer, and now had a husband and two children. “Yes, we are friends.” How could she talk about the race without disgracing Fast-Runner? “Then do you know where she’s been since the race?” “She is missing?” River-Song left the river to run back to the village. “Daughter!” Chief Sits-and-Thinks stopped her. Seeing her distress, they didn’t speak of the race. He confirmed that no one had seen Fast-Runner. She started out, only pausing when Walks-with-Pumas stood at her approach. “Are you looking for Fast-Runner?” “Yes.” “She shouldn’t be far, not on those slow legs!” She ran. River-Song wouldn’t give Walks-with-Pumas a dirty look, but she wouldn’t listen to bad talk, either! The old oak sat on top of a hill, with branches perfect for sitting and keeping a lookout. As expected, Fast-Runner was there, but she wasn’t up in the tree. Her injury, River-Song supposed. “Where have you been?” River-Song knew she had to speak now that they’d seen each other. After glancing at her, Fast-Runner lowered her face. “I can’t go into the village,” she said, “I’ve never lost the race in all the years I’ve run.” River-Song sat down a little ways from Fast-Runner. “Your foot got caught in a hole, I saw it! You could have won.” The other girl looked away. “No, I didn’t. Everyone heard what Walks-with-Pumas said. His father didn’t allow that name out of pity. Pity! He’ll never marry me now.” Forgetting their rivalry, River-Song asked, “Do you still want him as your husband?” This is how they used to speak to each other, as close friends. Almost like sisters. Fast-Runner sprang to her feet. “That is what you say now? If he marries me, you’ll pretend you never wanted him. But I know.” She left angry. River-Song watched her, too interested in her quick pace to call after her. Fast-Runner didn’t favor her leg anymore, or even limp. Even while Fast-Runner disappeared into the trees, River-Song told herself there was no reason for her to have faked an injury. Everyone knew she was the fastest woman in the tribe - she had proved it four times now! Had she thought River-Song would somehow beat her this year? In her own mind, River-Song would rather lose a fair race than pretend to fall. She decided not to consider the possibility. Instead, she gazed out at the lands around them. The blue sky went on until the earth ended, presiding over the hills and valleys, the streams glistening as they trickled and flowed over rocks and falls. The oaks of the valley gradually mixed into pines and cedars. The cedars were their sacred tree, giving them the long planks of wood with even grains. Yellow cedar was the softest, so they carved spoons and bowls from them. But the red cedar had better grains, splitting into long planks for their houses and canoes. Their babies slept in red cedar cradles. They carved their weapons from them. They beat strips of red cedar and twined them into mats, clothing, and baskets. A good weaver could make a basket to hold water. Maybe, someday, she would name a son for the beautiful tree that gave them so much. Strength and flexibility. Yes, Cedar-Tree would be a great name for a leader. Hearing footsteps in the twigs and grass, she turned to the visitor, a young brave that she felt fond for. “Cleaver-Fox, are you coming to keep watch?” “I wanted to see all the land.” He joined her. “You are happy after winning the race.” She found herself wishing that there had been no race. “No, little brother, I don’t know what to think about it. I don’t feel as if I really won.” She had talked to him many times about things she kept from others because she trusted him and knew he was wise. But he looked surprised that she told him this. “Didn’t you want to win?” She wouldn’t tell him that. “I didn’t want Fast-Runner to lose like that.” “People talk of nothing but you and Fast-Runner. And Walks-with-Pumas. Many women want to marry him.” River-Song was no longer one of those women. “I want what’s best for our people.” He broke into his wide, handsome grin. “Then maybe you’ll wait for me.” “Oh, you are like a brother to me!” She pushed him playfully. “Though sometimes I have wished you were old enough. I wish I were married now, with children on the way.” “I think you will marry someone greater than Walks-with-Pumas.” His smile vanished. “Who is greater than Walks-with-Pumas?” She felt uneasy now. “If you are as wise as I have thought you to be, you won’t repeat that to anyone. You have no reason to speak badly of him, and if he hears it . . . you wouldn’t win a fight against him.” Seriously, he replied, “River-Song, I didn’t mean it like that. He is great and strong. But there is a man somewhere who is great of mind.” She didn’t have an answer. No one spoke like this but their medicine man or leaders. “What do you mean by somewhere? You speak as if you’ve had a dream.” “I’ve seen things. Not a dream like that, though. I hear talk of the people north of us, the fighting, and other tribes, too. I see with my thinking. And I think there is a man who leads his own people that will be worthy to marry you.” They sat in silence for a long time because she didn’t understand where his wisdom came from. Would he go on to be a dreamer or medicine man for the people? “It’s time to prepare dinner.” She rose and let him follow her back into the village. “I am with you, River-Song.” Cleaver-Fox told her as they walked together. “Your father is right to have you lead the village.” Braves from her village were bringing salmon to their fire. Other fires were lit across the meadow, one for each of the other villages. “We celebrate tonight!” Village chief Sits-and-Thinks looked proud, wrapped in his weaved cedar strip blanket and his long, white braids laying over it. She would hold her sad thoughts tonight and celebrate. Maybe her father was wrong and he would come back for many summers, but he had not been wrong often during her life. After eating, they sang and danced. Since Fast-Runner had taken the race the last four years, the honor had gone to her village. But tonight, it would be River-Song’s village that celebrated into the night because they had the honor of winning. When she saw her father’s wide grin, she felt the first sparks of victory light inside her. She had caused his happiness tonight. It wasn’t until the embers burned down and she lay on her mat that she looked toward the main village’s fire. It, too, was burned down, and the people were sleeping. Walks-with-Pumas was sleeping, probably dreaming of becoming the chief and marrying any woman he wanted. His long, handsome face floated into her night vision. His high cheekbones seemed to give his eyes a slant so they looked amused. With his chest out, and his shoulders back, he laughed at life. Perhaps that should have been his name. She’d loved that about him. At least, she did until he laughed at her friend. She didn’t remember him laughing at her when she came in second place the last four years. Second place seemed easier to live with. A hand grabbed her shoulder. She shot up, her hand searching for her stick next to her. “River-Song! It’s Deer-Eyes, hush!” “I didn’t say anything.” She stood and crept away from the fire, motioning for the brave to follow. This was not right, that a friend of Walks-with-Pumas would visit her. “What do you want?” “I come as a friend. I want Walks-with-Pumas to marry you.” “Oh, you didn’t come to steal me away?” She sat down and crossed her legs, wishing she’d brought her weaved blanket. Why did he come to tell her this? He stood stiffly and said, “Don’t poke fun at me now. I love Fast-Runner and I must speak after what happened today.” At his words, she had to wonder if he was angry at her for winning. She hadn’t meant any harm to her friend. She motioned for him to join her and asked, “Why do you speak to me, in the middle of the night?” She watched him look around and sit in front of her. He was thick, especially through the shoulders, and was named for his wide, dark eyes. They had endless depths and looked watchful like a deer’s sometime did, but River-Song had never seen him display any wisdom. He followed Walks-with-Pumas like a shadow. “I want to marry Fast-Runner. So you must marry Walks-with-Pumas.” While she felt honored that he came to her for help, she didn’t feel she had much control over these things. “Why don’t you tell this to Fast-Runner?” “She thinks of nothing but marrying him.” His shoulders fell as he admitted this. It wouldn’t be an easy thing for any man to say. “Do you think he will?” River-Song thought more of her friend than her old desire to marry Walks-with-Pumas. Deer-Eyes, as a close friend to Walk-With-Pumas, might know something of his heart. “He claims he hasn’t decided. Chief Blue-Lightning isn’t pushing him in any direction. So far, no father has come with a gift to persuade him. Some ask if he will marry the winner of the games. I don’t know why he waits.” She thought of several possibilities, but none that she wanted to share with a close friend of Walks-with-Pumas. “And what if I no longer want to marry him?” She almost laughed when she thought of Deer-Eyes telling this to Walks-with-Pumas. “Why wouldn’t you?” He leaned closer in the darkness, sounding surprised. He sounded as if he didn’t believe her. “I will be village chief of my village. Maybe I will take no husband to weaken me.” Did he understand this? She talked like a man, like a leader in their village, and maybe she would have to live the life of a leader. A lonely life. She rose and left him. Chapter Three As they walked to the river the next morning, River-Song had to help her father three times. She had never helped him walk before, and only then did she acknowledge that he had grown weaker. He didn’t speak when they sat at the water’s edge, and she thought he was lost in thought, as she’d seen the old men do often. “You’re quiet, but your thoughts are heavy on you,” he said. At first, she shook her head, trying to smile. But then she saw his worried face. “There’s much to think about now.” “I have heard the talk, daughter. I asked you to come here with me so we could talk about it.” She had longed for counsel. “I’ve thought much about Fast-Runner and Walks-with-Pumas. I have thought bad things about the big chief’s son.” She didn’t want to tell him all of her thoughts. Some were for her and would always stay in her head. “I spoke with Cleaver-Fox and his words stay with me. He spoke about braves from over the mountain.” “Does he plan to go there?” “He seems to think they will come here.” She saw his face crease but he did not comment. Many lines had grown into his face since her childhood. “He didn’t speak of fighting as the other braves do, but he thinks one will be great enough to marry me.” The village chief still didn’t speak. “That isn’t unheard of, Father. You married a woman from over the mountain.” “I do not think this would be a bad thing. I’m silent while I think. You have never spoken of any brave except Walks-with-Pumas, and now you speak of one you have not seen.” “It could be the dreams of a child. I can’t say. But his words made me think of different ways I can go. I never thought of marrying another brave.” Speaking about this possibility made it feel more real to her. There were other paths that she could take. Suddenly, she felt the control she’d been longing for. Maybe she was stronger than she believed. Her father asked, “Do you no longer want to marry Walks-with-Pumas?” “My life is like a forest with many paths through the trees. I didn’t look at the other paths before, but now I see many.” “And I see, my daughter, that you are growing wise. You are ready to marry now.” He struggled to his feet. “Let us return to the others.” Walking back with him in silence, she felt a peace that didn’t come very often anymore. When they entered the meadow, she noticed the defensive stance of the braves as she walked with her father. “Do you know what they have been discussing?” In answer, he approached them with her at his side. Loud-Bear, who was the son of the southern village chief, paused when he saw Sits-and-Thinks and River-Song. Another brave named White-Deer, who was a distant cousin to Sits-and-Thinks and lived in the main village, spoke in the silence. “Have you heard the report from Long-Walker?” Chief Sit-and-Thinks asked, “Has he found yet another new place?” White-Deer motioned to his friend, who must have heard the news. “He traveled north again, following our river up to the mountain.” Loud-Bear stood and spoke now. “Our brothers on the other side are at war. Many have already died.” White-Deer rose also and spoke to Sits-and-Thinks, “We must be ready if they cross our sacred mountain.” “Would they?” River-Song asked her father. She knew their braves talked of fighting often, though there had not been war in their valley for five generations. The men always thought of fighting first. Sits-and-Thinks turned to her and spoke quietly as if the others were not there. “They fight each other for hunting rights or pride. Do you think they would want to involve us?” “No, our numbers grow every year,” she responded. “But we do not practice for war!” Loud-Bear stepped closer. “These games do nothing to ready us if we need to defend ourselves.” Again, Sits-and-Thinks turned to his daughter. “There will be councils on this, for sure. The chief will listen to the three village chiefs. Maybe braves will prepare for war, if it comes.” River-Song could not speak as her heart beat harder and harder. “We must not let it come. We must send scouts. We must meet them before they enter our lands.” Loud-Bear looked around the group of ten braves, measuring the support. Walks-with-Pumas was not present. People would listen to him if he spoke as Loud-Bear did. “Village Chief Sits-and-Thinks, you must not let your daughter decide your mind on this matter. Women do not understand war.” Sits-and-Thinks rose to his full height. “Perhaps you don’t remember how my wife died? You say she did not understand war, as a woman. Yet, as a woman, she fought with her people and saved her chief before coming to our lands. Then, after she became my wife, she fought a mother bear with my fishing spear and gave her life to save her family!” Sits-and-Thinks didn’t move, but stood firmly, forcing the braves to leave. This disrespect was not their way, but the people were changing. River-Song watched the braves leave, trying to be as unwavering as her father. When they stood alone, he spoke without looking her way. “If warriors come here, you will save the valley, daughter. This is your river, never forget that.” “Why do men want to make war?” “They want to prove themselves, gain land, gain honor. But there are much better ways to do these things. You know this. You have used wise words many times to put off fighting and secure peace among your peers.” This was true, but with so many things changing, maybe her words would not be enough. “Father . . . Do you think the brave Cleaver-Fox spoke of could come over the mountain?” This caused him to turn to her. “If you believe there is something to Cleaver-Fox’s dream, you must speak with Singing-Owl.” She left her father, but since he had not wanted to talk about Cleaver-Fox’s dream, she felt too foolish to go to Singing-Owl. She found Little-Fox alone in the meadow. “The other children are playing games.” She sat by Little-Fox and saw her drawings in the hardened earth. She still held the stick she used to draw and had dirt on her hands and face. “Where is your mother today?” “I don’t know.” “Come on.” She pulled the little girl up and took her to their camp. Little-Fox felt too light for her age in River-Song’s arms. “You need to come to the fire every morning and learn how to cook food with the women.” She wanted the child to learn how to contribute so she could eat. Her mother neglected to teach her these things. River-Song would make sure she learned, so she could someday get a husband. Raven sat with her youngest daughter, Summer-Rain, and several other women, cooking deer meat. Raven knew why River-Song brought Little-Fox: to feed her. River-Song greeted her. “I saw the shells on Laughing-Bird’s clothing.” Laughing-Bird was the older daughter who now must be spoken for. Summer-Rain, a very pretty girl of ten years, looked very jealous of her older sister. “They are nice, aren’t they?” Raven grinned widely, her plump hands tearing a piece of meat for Little-Fox. “She will marry well. He traded two beaver skins for those.” “I am happy for her.” Laughing-Bird didn’t have any worries that River-Song knew about. The girl, a year younger than her, spent her time with her many friends. For Summer-Rain, River-Song added, “Soon it will be your turn and a brave will bring gifts for you.” “Yes.” Raven turned to the girl with a proud gleam in her eyes. “You should bring good gifts with that face. Maybe many braves will give me gifts to win our favor.” Raven’s husband sat behind the women, sharpening his arrows, and laughed at this. Behind him, people came in from the forest and meadow. Walks-with-Pumas paused beside them. “Are you ready for the hunt?” His gaze rested on River-Song, his eyes seeming to be serious and laughing at the same time. “I’m ready.” Chapter Four The hunt The tall cedars allowed only spots of light to slip through and speckle the forest floor. The buck’s fur blended perfectly into the bark of the trees, and the browns and grays on the ground. River-Song, watching him, ignored the others as they moved away. With her bow straight in front of her, she moved her feet slowly but with purpose. They made no noise on the pine needles. She needed to move to his side to get a clear shot between the trees. Her victory vibrated inside of her. “Ahh, Yahhh!” Fast-Runner’s shrill call shattered the breezy quietness in the forest. She’d made a kill. River-Song’s deer sprang and darted away, gone as quickly as the sunlight. She shook her weapon, wondering what, if anything, she should say to Fast-Runner. It didn’t matter what Fast-Runner had shot, it had been the first kill. River-Song didn’t hurry back to the village as the other hunters did. She couldn’t let the others see her so upset. She stopped at the edge of the trees and watched as everyone surrounded Fast-Runner in the clearing. She held up a rabbit as she danced about. Though she had been triumphant in all the games, she felt that she lost everything by not bringing back a kill. Her honor demanded that she go and congratulate her friend, but they hadn’t been friends in a long time. Fast-Runner’s rabbit wasn’t much to boast about, but she had nothing. Someone caught sight of her and called out. When people turned, she had no choice but to join them. She wouldn’t snap. But she felt she had to say something. “Look, River-Song!” Fast-Runner looked gleeful. “I’ve won the most important competition!” “I lost a large buck because you screamed. Only a foolish woman screams when she makes a kill.” Her tone caused all the laughing and talking to cease. She saw hatred in Fast-Runner’s eyes. “It’s a game, not a hunt. I was announcing my win.” She was right, but River-Song wouldn’t say this now. She gave a cold look to the small rabbit hanging from Fast-Runner’s hand and turned back to the trees. The hunt shouldn’t matter to her so much, not enough to say something that mean. She stalked away from the village, needing to be alone. She dreaded facing her father. Deer-Eyes found her at the river. He sat by her, but didn’t speak. “I treated Fast-Runner badly,” she said. He looked as if he understood, but she never knew for certain what he thought. He asked, “Will you marry Walks-with-Pumas?” Suddenly she saw the plea in his eyes. She rose. “It’s not for me to decide. I can’t force him to marry me.” If he wanted to marry the winner of the summer games, that would be Fast-Runner. “Ask him, River-Song.” “I won’t. I no longer want him.” While staring at Deer-Eyes, she felt friendship growing between them. They understood each other. He raised a hand, knowing she wanted to leave. She left in the fading daylight, wishing she could have the desires in her heart even while Fast-Runner also attained what she wanted. If only she had the power to make Fast-Runner want Deer-Eyes as he wanted her. The true problem came from inside herself. Did she still want to marry Walks-with-Pumas? Part of her no longer wanted this, while another part of her couldn’t give up longing for something that had been a large part of her life during the last four years. She walked quickly, as if her problems were behind her. Someone else walked behind her, but she didn’t look back. She didn’t feel like talking to anyone now. She never expected her father to catch her. He grabbed her arm and stopped her. River-Song knew he wouldn’t speak about what she’d said, but his eyes showed his displeasure. He asked, “Where are you going?” “Into the woods to think.” “You think about beginning your search again this summer. But you will not search for the sacred token!” She had never heard her father’s voice shake before, nor seen him direct his angry eyes at her. “You must listen to me now, River-Song, for this is my last request of you. To marry Walks-with-Pumas is not for you.” Though the words at first dug into her like a dull dagger, she held onto her emotions. “Have you decided this since I told you what Cleaver-Fox said? Now you, too, speak as though you know the future.” The air felt soft and cool in the forest. The forest felt comforting to her, but her life felt like the river as it rushed over the rocks. “I understand many things.” Her father said in a gentle voice. “I see things in him that you don’t. Or maybe I’m wrong, and maybe you’ve started to see him for what he is.” She had thought this about Walks-with-Pumas as well, but had known better than to speak this way. “Father, you’ve never spoken ill of him.” “No, I have not. I’ve let you find wisdom on your own, on many things, but your life is starting on the direction that you will follow.” She hurt at seeing the slump in his shoulders, the fragility of his body. At the last full moon, she felt young, with her future before her. And she felt she could direct that future. Within the last few days, many aspects of her life had jaunted off in unforeseen directions. “I only want to walk in the woods today, Father. I’m not looking for anything.” She spoke the truth. River-Song had never lied to her father, or anyone else for that matter. “You seek direction then?” “I seek answers,” she explained. “Life isn’t long enough for all these worries. And I haven’t acted as I wanted. I was rude to Fast-Runner.” Understanding filled his eyes. “Daughter, this time is troubling, but it will pass. Soon you and Fast-Runner will both find husbands and your places in the tribe. Then you can heal these wounds.” That didn’t always happen, she knew. An old man had died during the winter still angry with his son. They had lived in different villages and had not spoken in many years. “I hope so.” She left her father and walked through the oaks, away from the river, and into the pines and cedars. The soft needles underfoot lined their hunting grounds on the hills. Touching the shells on her deerskin tunic, she thought she didn’t need a husband. She could survive and live well without a man. When she heard a rustling in the berry briars, she raised her bow and cautiously proceeded toward it. A bear! It animal looked as if it were hunting, and not paying attention to her. Several large scars marked the old bear’s dark brown fur. It would stand taller than her if it rose up, but now it stalked its prey away from her. She was upwind and behind it, so she followed at a safe distance as it started down a slope. Her eyes were trained down her arrow, so she almost missed the silent braves at the bottom of the hill. She did not know these braves in her valley. The group didn’t see the bear as they bent over a wounded man. If not for the bear, she would have lowered her bow. Should she yell a warning? She wanted to look closer at their strange clothing and faces, for they looked different from any brave she had ever seen. The bear might turn on her, so she waited. Then suddenly she realized the bear smelled the blood of the wounded man on the ground. He charged. “Bear!” she yelled her warning now, but knew she must also act. Running after the bear, she shot. His yowl startled the warriors into action. Now angry, the bear rose up before attacking. Several warriors leaped toward it with spears, fighting to stab the animal without being clawed. River-Song sadly saw her arrow had caused more anger than damage to the bear, so she aimed another. The three braves in front jabbed their spears to keep the bear’s attention while two more circled. It dropped to all four feet, trying to lunge and charge. They confused him with many attackers so he couldn’t charge at just one person. The two circling it wanted to get behind it, but it snarled and swung at them. She held her arrow because she wasn’t sure if she could hit the bear without hitting a brave. They took him then, jumping and driving their spears down into his back. He stumbled away, falling slowly. River-Song came up on him because he was not dead, and she didn’t want it to suffer. She already had another arrow ready, but she didn’t dare take her eyes off the warriors now that they saw her. “Finish it!” Only one spoke, the one who had driven in his spear. He watched her with wild eyes, and came three steps closer. The wounded bear voiced his pain, but didn’t move. This brave’s brown eyes were endless in his wide face, and white eagle feathers in his hair set off his high cheekbones. She became aware of the twenty or so braves around the speaker. After several backward steps, she turned behind a tree and raced back toward the village. No, she thought, she’d lead them there. Turning, she ran in another direction before rounding back to the river. Those eyes of his - maybe they could see her even now as she fled. She saw him and the bear in her mind. She wasn’t pleased that the bear was dead. She didn’t like to kill such a magnificent animal. She didn’t slow her pace until she reached the village, and then she went to their sacred long house. They would be discussing. It wasn’t good to go inside, but she didn’t hesitate. “Father!” The men rose and broke into complaints directed at the big chief. Chief Blue-Lightning remained seated, waiting for silence. They looked to him, to hear what he would say about her interruption. “Strange braves!” She hadn’t caught her breath yet and had to pause. “I saw a band of strange braves in the woods.” Chief Blue-Lightning rose. “What did they look like?” Had she noticed? And could she describe their clothing? “One spoke and I understood. He spoke as my mother did.” Heads turned toward Sits-and-Thinks. “Our brothers from over the mountain.” “How can we be sure?” “Were they painted for war?” Voices rose outside the long house like a great wind coming up on them. She went to the door and stepped out, finding their tribe gathered and talking all at once. Loud-Bear jumped up on a boulder, “Warriors are coming! We must fight!” She moved aside and let the chiefs come out. The village chiefs preceded her father and then Chief Blue-Lightning came. The people became mostly quiet except Loud-Bear and Raven. A few others voiced their opinions until the big chief held up a hand. River-Song saw Walks-with-Pumas walk through the people to join them. “I want to hear what River-Song saw.” His eyes were on her, intense as she had never seen them. Knowing that everyone watched her, she took a breath’s time to think about her words. “I took the path to go upriver and then over the hill. I saw a large bear hunting prey below him, and I was upwind, so I followed. As we started down the hill, I saw a band of braves.” She glanced at Walks-with-Pumas quickly. His complete attention was new to her. “Their clothing, River-Song.” Chief Blue-Lightning prompted. “I saw mostly one brave . . . a very tall man with long hair. Longer than our men wear their hair. A long face, but not painted. Utilizaban cuñas para tomar prestados grandes tablones de madera sin arrancar el árbol del bosque. Su gran río había dado vida a los árboles y al pescado que alimentaba a su pueblo. Por ello se sentía agradecida, y de nuevo, alzaba su rostro hacia el cielo. El azul celestial y el azul del río eran sagrados para ellos. El Jefe Salmón estaba sentado encima de su tótem para proteger la aldea y dar la bienvenida a todos. Su pueblo disponía de dos canoas talladas a mano para asemejarse al gran salmón. —¡Jamás me marcharé de aquí! —¿Estás segura? —Corredora Veloz la sobresaltó e hizo que Canto del Río se diera cuenta de lo absorta que se había quedado al verse rodeada de tanta belleza. Pero Corredora Veloz no tenía ningún derecho a interrumpir aquel momento. Canto del Río le lanzó una mirada desaprobatoria a su amiga, pero a ella no pareció importarle lo más mínimo—. Parece como si te fueran a salir unas alas de águila y estuvieras a punto de alzar el vuelo. —Soy tan feliz que podría volar. —Canto del Río sonrió, sintiendo la brisa en su rostro—. Pero amo demasiado a mi río. Se sentaron en silencio. Corredora Veloz había recibido su nombre debido a sus largas piernas, que corrían más que las de cualquier otra muchacha de su edad. Su padre contaba con muchas cualidades que ofrecer a la hora de conseguir un buen matrimonio para su hija, que además tejía las mejores chaquetas de cedro de la aldea. Ahora Corredora Veloz llevaba una hermosa chaqueta tejida, sin forro de piel, ya que todavía no hacía frío. A pesar de todo, Canto del Río nunca había sentido envidia de ella porque eran amigas, aunque sospechaba que Corredora Veloz se había vuelto en su contra en los últimos dos años. Su amistad se había convertido en una clara competencia. Afortunadamente, durante el invierno les había tocado vivir en dos casas largas diferentes de la aldea. Canto del Río deseaba que Corredora Veloz se hubiera casado y se hubiera mudado a otra aldea tras los juegos de verano. Ambas querían casarse con Camina con Pumas, pero él todavía no se había decidido. Sabía que podía elegir a cualquier muchacha de las cuatro aldeas, por lo que no tenía prisa en casarse. Su tribu contaba con más mujeres que hombres en edad casadera, lo que preocupaba a muchas mujeres. Los juegos de verano habían llegado a su fin y todavía faltaba mucho tiempo hasta que se celebraran los juegos del próximo año, de modo que no había ninguna razón para hablar sobre aquello ahora. Canto del Río no respondió. —No podrás ser el jefe de nuestra aldea si te casas con Camina con Pumas. —¿Por qué no? —Canto del Río sabía que Corredora Veloz no podía ejercer ningún control sobre aquel asunto, de modo que no tenía derecho a hablarle al respecto. —Vivirías en la aldea principal. —Tal vez —dijo Canto del Río, sin querer pensar en tener que elegir entre ser el jefe de su aldea o casarse con Camina con Pumas. Las costumbres podían cambiar, podría haber una manera de hacer ambas cosas. Recordó la época cuando Corredora Veloz y ella jugaban juntas sin preocuparse por el futuro—. ¿No es bueno para todos que mi padre sea el jefe de la aldea? Todavía me quedan muchos veranos para demostrar que puedo seguir sus pasos. —Eso no es lo que se comenta en la casa larga. —¿Qué saben ellos? —Se levantó y caminó río arriba tratando de recuperar la aletargada felicidad que sentía antes, pero la rabia se apoderó de ella tras los comentarios de Corredora Veloz. Deseaba con todas sus fuerzas casarse con Camina con Pumas, pero también quería lo mejor para su gente. De ahí provenía su ira. Si tenía que elegir entre lo uno o lo otro, optaría por liderar su aldea en lugar de casarse con Camina con Pumas. No esperaba con ilusión la llegada del invierno. ¡Debería estar casada! Ahora se pasaría la larga estación de lluvias preguntándose si Camina con Pumas la prefería a ella o a Corredora Veloz, que era alta, rápida y sabía tejer. Y su cabeza había sido achatada, con lo cual también se la consideraba más hermosa. No, no podía pensar en ello. Además, había comenzado ya la temporada de pesca, de recolectar bellotas para triturarlas y de cocer al vapor las tiras de cedro para tejer más chaquetas. Su padre era sabio y le había dicho que ella era fuerte. Y así sería. Capítulo Uno Después del invierno Las exuberantes hojas verdes llenaban la orilla del río mientras se dirigían hacia el sur para asistir a los juegos de verano en la aldea principal. Su gente se sentó en dos canoas grandes y, mientras que en la otra canoa remaban hacia adelante, ellos se dejaban arrastrar por la corriente. Ya no podían ver sus casas largas. Aquella mañana, Canto del Río se había despedido de su hogar y sabía que podían pasar muchos días o muchas lunas hasta que regresara. Quizá volviera a ver su aldea convertida en esposa, o tal vez se casaría y se iría a vivir a una aldea nueva. Incluso tras pensar en ello durante todo el invierno, todavía no sabía lo que quería. Le pidió a Padre Salmón que la guiara, de la misma forma que guiaba al resto del pueblo. Al pasar la curva del rio, dejaron atrás la cascada, y su fuerte murmullo se fue desvaneciendo. Aunque todavía no había llegado el calor, nadaron deslizándose por la cascada. En ocasiones, los más jóvenes saltaban a la poza cuando terminaba el invierno para dar la bienvenida a la nueva temporada de cultivo. En cuanto alguien desafiaba al frío y se zambullía en la agitada poza bajo la cascada, todos aceptaban el reto. —¡Ay, Hermano Castor! — Piensa Sentado extendió sus brazos hacia el animal. Canto del Río escuchó el ruido del castor al golpear su cola en el agua mientras se sumergía. Amaba la manera en la que el río les cantaba y el sonido de los remos al sumergirse en el agua. No deseaba apurar a su padre. Entendía que él no esperaba emprender de nuevo aquel viaje, aunque desconocía la razón por la cual opinaba así. A su gente le encantaba reír y contar historias, pero en momentos como aquellos permanecían en silencio para venerar la tierra, el valle regado de riachuelos errantes y las pequeñas colinas. Su montaña sagrada se alzaba por encima de las colinas al norte, orientándolos siempre que era necesario. Frente a Canto del Río se sentaba Pequeño Zorro, que abrazaba su preciado juguete de madera con una amplia sonrisa en su rostro regordete. Canto del Río le había dado el salmón tallado, un juguete que su madre había esculpido para ella. Canto del Árbol se lo había regalado como un símbolo para protegerla durante el curso de su vida. Pero ella sentía que Pequeño Zorro lo necesitaba aún más que ella. Como Canto del Río era hija única, amaba a Pequeño Zorro como si fuese su hermana pequeña. Los ojos de la niña eran tan oscuros como la corteza más oscura y parecían dos lunas gigantes en su rostro. Rara vez hablaba, por eso muchos la consideraban poco ingeniosa. Canto del Río no creía que Pequeño Zorro fuese mentalmente lenta, sino que pensaba de forma diferente. La madre de Pequeño Zorro, Gorrión Silencioso, nunca habló. Intentaba alimentar a su hija, pero era muy lenta trabajando y no tenía otros hijos que la ayudaran. Canto del Río sentía que su deber como hija del jefe era el de cuidar de todos los habitantes de la aldea y, como sabía que Pequeño Zorro tenía buen corazón, quería asegurarse de que otros no le robaran su comida ni la obligaran a hacer su trabajo. Canto del Río se vio sobresaltada por Corredora Veloz. —¿Estamos a punto de atacar la aldea? Con esa expresión parece como si quisieras ponerte pintura de guerra. Se volvió hacia la muchacha que una vez había sido su amiga. Corredora Veloz había interrumpido sus pensamientos una vez más. Las veinte personas de la canoa esperaron a que hablara, pero sus ojos se posaron sobre su hija y ella supo que pensaba igual que Salmón Rápido. —Vamos a demostrar nuestra valía, ¿no es cierto? —dijo ella, leyéndole el pensamiento—. Competimos por nuestra aldea, nuestro orgullo y para tener matrimonios fuertes y saludables. Las cosas están cambiando en las cuatro aldeas, si queremos mantener nuestra reputación debemos estar preparados. Desde la ceremonia del salmón el otoño pasado, el jefe Piensa Sentado había permitido que su hija hablara en su lugar en muchas ocasiones. Algunos lo aceptaban, otros murmuraban en el interior de las casas largas. Halcón Rojo, un guerrero más joven que Canto del Rio, se alzó sobre sus rodillas y se dirigió hacia ella. —¿Desde cuándo hablas en nombre de todos? Canto del Río sabía que Cola de Castor había obligado a su hijo a decirle aquello, pues pensaba que su hijo podría ser el próximo jefe de la aldea, aunque todavía era demasiado joven. Esperaba que Cola de Castor se sintiera avergonzado por permitir que su hijo pronunciase tales palabras. Cuervo, una mujer de edad avanzada que tenía dos hijas, estaba sentada al fondo y parecía dispuesta a expresar su opinión. Solía contarle a todo el mundo que su nombre se debía a su brillante cabello oscuro, pero todos sabían que era porque graznaba como un cuervo cada mañana. Piensa Sentado se levantó, interrumpiéndola, y, envuelto en su chaqueta tejida en fibra de cedro, que lo protegía de la brisa primaveral, le lanzó una mirada solemne al guerrero. La advertencia silenció a todos, y el jefe Piensa Sentado continuó contemplando el bosque que los rodeaba. Corredora Veloz estaba sentada delante de Canto del Río, de modo que esta última podía ver cómo comenzaba a girar la cabeza, probablemente quería lanzarle una mirarla malvada a Canto del Río, pero no se atrevía. Incluso Cuervo permaneció en silencio durante el resto de la travesía río abajo. Canto del Río se sintió agradecida por no tener que responder a Halcón Rojo. Ella no había hecho nada para demostrar su capacidad de liderazgo. Únicamente su padre creía en ella. Muchos hombres se habían convertido en jefes tras demostrar que eran fuertes o sabios, o porque habían acumulado muchas posesiones. Normalmente, las mujeres no se convertían en líderes, pero el jefe Piensa Sentado insistía en que ella debía sucederlo como jefe de la aldea. Mientras seguían navegando, Canto del Río volvió a peinar a Pequeño Zorro, que ya tenía las trenzas deshechas. Canto del Río llevaba puesta su mejor camisa de gamuza con adornos de conchas, que había confeccionado su madre. Durante el invierno, mientras permanecían en las casas largas, ella también había hecho una camisa para Pequeño Zorro. Gorrión Silencioso, la madre de Pequeño Zorro, iba sentaba en la parte posterior de la canoa con los hombros encorvados y los ojos cerrados. Canto del Río reconoció enseguida la curva del río y los árboles que bordeaban la orilla como señal de llegada a la aldea principal; poco después, escuchó voces que se mezclaban con la brisa. —Mirad cuánta gente viene a darnos la bienvenida. —Pequeño Zorro se levantó y sonrió. —¿No recuerda el año anterior? —preguntó Corredora Veloz, mientras sumergía su remo en el agua ayudando al resto a dirigir la canoa hacia la orilla. Varios guerreros remaron hasta alcanzar las rocas en la orilla del río. Halcón Rojo saltó fuera de la canoa y dejó que Zorro Astuto le ayudara a amarrarla. —Aún es joven. Los niños se emocionan cada año. —Canto del Río prefería que cada uno mostrara sus emociones en lugar de esconderlas tras comentarios groseros. Estaba a punto de decírselo a Corredora Veloz, pero se sentía feliz de ver a sus amigos y de escuchar sus voces. Tras su desembarque, como era tradición, el jefe de la aldea les indicó dónde dejar sus pertenencias. Todos iban cargados con las pieles y las esterillas tejidas en fibra de cedro sobre las que dormirían durante el transcurso de los juegos. El jefe de la aldea condujo al grupo desde la canoa hasta el claro donde dejaron sus cosas. Cada una de las tres aldeas que viajaban al poblado principal encendería una hoguera en el claro por la noche y dormirían en sus esterillas en torno al fuego. No necesitarían nada más para mantenerse calientes durante el verano, si bien construirían chozas para proveer sombra. Más tarde, las mujeres saldrían juntas para recoger leña, pero de momento extendían sus esterillas e instalaban sus marmitas de cocción. Los hombres partieron de inmediato para reunirse con sus amigos y familiares y las mujeres pronto les seguirían, aunque Canto del Río prefirió quedarse allí. Durante el invierno había soñado muchas veces que Camina con Pumas, incapaz de esperar hasta los juegos de verano, había ido a visitarla a su aldea. A menudo pensaba cómo sería su vida cuando se casaran y pasaran todo el año juntos. Deseaba salir en su busca, pero no quería que nadie supiera cuanto anhelaba volver a verlo. Escuchó su risa antes de que pudiera verlo. Nadie se reía como Camina con Pumas. Así que mientras cerraba su refugio lo observó a través de sus pestañas. Cuatro años antes del comienzo de los juegos de verano su padre lo había llevado a la montaña sagrada para que se convirtiera en un hombre. Un puma había atacado al jefe Relámpago Azul y lo había derribado. Antes de este suceso, Camina con Pumas recibía el nombre de Caminante Veloz. Luchó contra el puma y salvó a su padre de las garras del animal, pero le perdonó la vida. Cuando regresaron a su aldea, su padre compartió la historia del feroz hombre-animal que caminaba a cuatro patas y podía saltar y trepar por los árboles, su rugido era terrible y sus ojos, amarillos, lo dejaban a uno paralizado. Los otros guerreros le preguntaron a Caminante Veloz por qué no había matado al animal y este les respondió que los pumas eran ahora sus amigos. Fue entonces cuando su padre le asignó su nuevo nombre. Compartieron esta historia con todas las aldeas durante los juegos de verano. Canto del Río todavía recordaba cómo su corazón retumbaba en su pecho mientras la escuchaba. Camina con Pumas se sentía orgulloso junto a su padre mientras este relataba de nuevo el ataque. Canto del Río nunca había experimentado aquellos sentimientos de agitación en su interior, pero los reconoció al instante, puesto que su madre le había explicado lo que sucedería a medida que creciera. Sabía lo que significaba el matrimonio y tener sentimientos secretos hacia un hombre. Su corazón volvió a latir con fuerza a medida que se acercaba el sonido de su risa. —Canto del Río. Se volvió lentamente, sin dejar de sonreír. —Camina con Pumas. —¡Te has convertido en toda una mujer! —Su cabello negro le cubría los hombros; su pecho y sus brazos desnudos brillaban bronceados por el sol. —Hace ya muchos veranos que me he convertido en una mujer —le respondió. Los guerreros que estaban detrás de Camina con Pumas se echaron a reír. —Y pronto serás el jefe de tu aldea. —Se dio la vuelta y se fue, seguido por sus guerreros. Mientras observaba sin emoción, su corazón gritaba. ¿Todo el mundo esperaba que su padre se muriera pronto? Si Camina con Pumas se decidiera a casarse con ella, no se le presentarían tantas decisiones contradictorias. Pero si su padre moría y ella se convertía en el jefe de la aldea antes de casarse, probablemente nunca tendría la oportunidad de casarse con él. ¿No lo entendía? Tal vez sí lo entendía, y había hablado con ella para avisarla. O quizá nunca había tenido la intención de casarse con ella. Volvió a centrarse en su trabajo, pero podía oír cómo él iba de un lado para otro en el campamento para reunirse con los cazadores. El jefe Relámpago Azul cantó y encendió el fuego mientras la gente de las cuatro aldeas lo observaba. Varios grupos de cazadores habían salido y todos ellos regresaban con alimentos para cocinar. Zorro Astuto, un muchacho de su aldea, mostró con orgullo dos conejos. Tenía doce años, pero ya se había convertido en un cazador respetado. A Canto del Río le gustaba especialmente porque tenía una cara alegre. Los guerreros habían cazado lo suficiente para saciar a todos. Canto del Búho, su curandero, comenzó la ceremonia nocturna cantando y danzando alrededor del fuego mientras las llamas se iban avivando hasta volverse de un color rojo intenso. Canto del Río pensaba en su gente como una luz en la noche, como el sol y la luna. —¡Vivimos con honor! Caminamos con respeto y reverencia hacia la Madre Tierra. —Mientras rodeaba el fuego, vio a Canto del Río y le hizo un gesto. Ella acudió a su encuentro y comenzó a danzar y cantar junto a él. Como guardiana de las historias de la tribu conocía bien sus tradiciones. El acolchado de sus mocasines les servía de base a sus voces. Oyó las voces graves de los guerreros que se unían al canto. El jefe Relámpago Azul fue el primero en mostrar las máscaras ceremoniales ante los que danzaban. Los jefes de las otras tres aldeas traían las máscaras que le habían sido confiadas. Más gente se unió al círculo sagrado para celebrar la abundancia que se les ofrecía. Con sus movimientos, representaron muchas historias. La música se fue apagando y llegó el momento de que Canto del Río contara su historia. Los niños se sentaron delante entorno al círculo y los tambores retumbaron suavemente mientras ella iniciaba el canto y les relataba cómo había comenzado el origen de su vida. La gente danzaba alrededor del fuego con sus máscaras representando la historia y todos la revivieron mientras observaban los hábiles movimientos. Cuando terminó de narrar la historia se unió a las personas sentadas en círculo. Canto del Búho danzaba y cantaba en honor al sol que abrazaba la tierra cada primavera y les proporcionaba nuevas plantas. Después, le tocó el turno a Camina con Pumas, que bailó con su torso desnudo brillando a la luz del fuego. Por una vez su rostro no era divertido, sino solemne, y sus movimientos rápidos. No cantaba, pero dejó que el rápido retumbar de los tambores se convirtiera en su música. Danzaron y cantaron durante toda la noche. Las estrellas brillaban con más fuerza a medida que las llamas se fueron apagando. Ella observó cómo Camina con Pumas la miraba con frecuencia. Corredora Veloz también la miraba, pero Canto del Río la ignoró. Se sentía tan libre como un águila en la brisa estival. Aquella había sido la noche más feliz de su vida, a pesar de que su padre no se había levantado para danzar o cantar en toda la noche. Capítulo Dos Las estrellas se fueron apagando y el fuego se redujo a cenizas antes de que la ceremonia hubiera terminado. Cuando Canto del Río decidió volver a su hoguera, mucha gente de su aldea ya estaba durmiendo. De pronto, Camina con Pumas se acercó a su lado con una antorcha en la mano. —¿Vas a salir a pescar? —preguntó, ya que a veces solían pescar utilizando antorchas para atraer a los peces. Estos se acercaban a la luz pero no podían ver al guerrero a punto de lanzarles el arpón. —¿Por qué debería ir a pescar después de todo lo que hemos comido? — Incluso ahora parecía estar riéndose. —¿Entonces por qué llevas una antorcha? ¿Tienes miedo de caminar en la oscuridad? —No dices más que maldades. —Lo sé. —Sonrió mientras caminaba lentamente hacia la hoguera donde la gente de su aldea dormía, esperando que le pidiera que se quedara con él. Camina con Pumas vaciló y ella pensó que le pediría que hablasen más adelante, cuando hubiesen descansado. —Quizá podamos hablar cuando finalicen los juegos —dijo él finalmente. —No quiero esperar tanto. —¿Por qué debían hacerlo? —Ahora no es el momento, tengo demasiadas cosas en la cabeza, además de los juegos, y no necesito hablar de ello con una mujer. —¡Yo no soy simplemente una mujer! —Se sintió despreciada y quería hacerle daño a cambio. Su indignación fue en aumento cuando se dio cuenta de la manera en la que se había referido a las mujeres—. Los hombres vivirían más tiempo si prestaran más atención a lo que dicen las mujeres. —Tampoco iríamos nunca a la guerra. —¿Y cuándo hemos necesitado ir? La guerra no es un juego. —Se dio media vuelta y se dirigió hacia su hoguera, tumbándose sobre su esterilla sin volverse para mirarlo. La falta de sueño no hizo que Canto del Río estuviera cansada al día siguiente. Se sentía preparada para competir en la carrera con las otras mujeres y con las muchachas más jóvenes. Corredora Veloz siempre había ganado, de ahí su nombre. Pero Canto del Río sabía que este año podría seguir su ritmo. En cuanto abrió los ojos se mantuvo ocupada para no pensar en la noche anterior. En el campamento la gente se reunía en grupos intercambiando vasijas, esterillas y conchas. Saludó a muchos de ellos mientras caminaba. Después de cocinar pescado y recolectar bayas se preparó para nadar en las frías aguas del río en las que se reflejaban las sombras de los robles. —¡Buenos días, gran río! —Se detuvo en la orilla para desprenderse de sus prendas de verano—. Mi cuerpo está hecho con la tierra de este valle, tú eres mi hogar y compartimos el mismo nombre. —Se sumergió para nadar con el salmón y la trucha que se escondían en las profundidades. Quería que el agua helada lavara toda la ira que llevaba dentro. Nunca había sentido tanta rabia de forma tan ardiente y dolorosa. Se sentía confusa. ¿Cómo podía amar a Camina con Pumas un día y sentirse tan enojada con él al día siguiente? Se sentía furiosa con Corredora Veloz, aunque le dolía sentirse de este modo. Quería recuperar a su amiga. Dado que no quería encontrase con Camina con Pumas, permaneció un buen rato junto al río secando su largo cabello para luego trenzarlo. Regresó a la aldea caminando lentamente. Todavía quedaban algunas bayas primaverales en los matorrales y comió algunas moras maduras que encontró por el sendero. El sol salió por encima de los árboles poniendo fin al frescor de la madrugada y Canto del Río supo que debía regresar si quería participar en la carrera aquel día. —¡Hija! —El jefe de aldea la vio—. ¿No vas a correr? Probablemente este sea el último año que puedas competir. El próximo año esperaba estar casada y por lo tanto, no participaría en los juegos. Resultaría vergonzoso ser tan vieja y no tener un marido junto a ella. —Ya voy, padre. —Durante la última generación, habían nacido más niñas que niños. Ahora algunas mujeres tenían que esperar más tiempo para contraer matrimonio ya que no había suficientes hombres para que todas se casaran al mismo tiempo. Caminó con su padre en silencio, quizá él estuviera pensando las mismas cosas. La actitud del gran jefe había transformado también a la gente de su tribu. Los hombres no respetaban como antes a las mujeres, sino que buscaban esposas como Arco Gracioso, que quisieran quedarse en casa a tejer. Canto del Río podría quedarse en casa y tejer, contar historias y ser feliz, pero su gente necesitaba a alguien que mantuviera la paz en su valle. Se lo había dicho su padre y ella sabía que tenía razón. Podía expresarse sabiamente y era capaz de negociar tratados y ganarse la confianza de las tribus fuera de su territorio. Llegaron al claro y se reunieron con el resto de la gente. Hasta ahora, los hombres no la habían escuchado a la hora de crear nuevas alianzas e intercambiar mercancías. Ante todo, el gran jefe quería crecer en número, tener más tierras y más prestigio. Mientras reflexionaba sobre aquello, Canto del Río suspiró sin decir nada. Había llegado el momento de reunirse con el resto de las muchachas que participaban en la carrera. Las jóvenes solteras se posicionaron en la línea de salida. Todos se agruparon tras ellas y esperaron en silencio hasta que el jefe Relámpago Azul estiró su brazo, señalando el camino. Las jóvenes comenzaron a correr mientras la gente las vitoreaba al pasar. Canto del Río tenía la mirada fija en la espalda de Corredora Veloz, a pesar de que muchas otras mujeres corrían entre ellas dos. Mantuvo el ritmo de Corredora Veloz, dejando atrás al resto de corredoras. ¡Podía seguir su ritmo! Corrieron sobre la suave hierba de la pradera hasta adentrarse en el bosque, esquivando los árboles. Corría como un salmón en el agua sin desfallecer y sin perder de vista a Corredora Veloz. Mientras corría, pensaba en el águila alzando el vuelo. «¡Dame fuerzas, Padre Salmón!» Era fuerte y saludable, pero su ansia por demostrar su valía la impulsaba más allá. Corrieron entorno al roble solitario donde los hombres se reunían para hablar y luego, cambiaron de dirección para volver al campamento. Oía como las demás pisoteaban el terreno detrás de ellas, todavía lejos. Eran unas veinte corredoras en total que competían para demostrar que estaban sanas y fuertes para convertirse en buenas esposas. Canto del Río corría justo detrás de Corredora Veloz. —¡Ahh! —Corredora Veloz tropezó. Canto del Río casi se cae al tratar de detenerse a su lado; se arrodilló junto a su amiga. —¡Continúa! — El grito de Corredora Veloz sobresaltó a Canto del Río, invitándola a proseguir; enseguida se puso en pie y corrió hasta llegar la primera a la aldea. Muchos le dieron la bienvenida, pero ella no conseguía ver a su padre. . —¡Has ganado! —Pequeño Zorro acudió a su encuentro. La gente se fue acercando y enseguida comenzaron a murmurar. —¿Dónde está Corredora Veloz? Camina con Pumas apareció junto a su padre, con los brazos cruzados. —¿Querrás decir la Segunda Corredora Veloz? Canto del Río vio llegar a Corredora Veloz cojeando de una pierna, con la cabeza gacha. Sabía que su rival había escuchado el comentario y había visto la reacción de la gente. Ella deseaba ganar desesperadamente, pero su honor le impedía permanecer en silencio. —Ha tropezado en un hoyo y se ha caído. Como hijo del gran jefe, Camina-con-Pumas tenía el poder de asignar un nuevo nombre a alguien, pero ella dejó de lado sus emociones puesto que no quería que llamaran a Corredora Veloz por su nuevo nombre. La gente miraba al jefe Relámpago Azul. Su rostro nunca reflejaba sus pensamientos, ya que prefería actuar en lugar de expresarse con palabras. La gente lo llamaba Relámpago Azul porque se enojaba con facilidad. ¡Cómo se alegraba Canto del Río de que el gran jefe se mostrara tan firme al impedir que Camina con Pumas tomara sus propias decisiones! Sentía un gran respeto por el jefe Relámpago Azul pero ya no respetaba a Camina con Pumas. La gente esperaba ansiosamente, haciendo conjeturas sobre lo que iba a ocurrir. La última competidora se reunió con ellos, una joven que corría para aprender, no para ganar. Ahora hablaría el jefe. —Corredora Veloz debe aprender a mirar por donde corre. Canto del Río es la vencedora de esta carrera. —El jefe se dio la vuelta y se marchó pero nadie se atrevió a hablar en su ausencia. Canto del Río se sentía agradecida de que el gran jefe no hubiese llamado a Corredora Veloz con el nombre que le había dado Camina con Pumas. Vio como los ojos de Camina con Pumas se entrecerraban llenos de rabia pero no reaccionó, ocultando a los demás la rabia que lo invadía. Se marchó, bromeando con sus amigos. Ella continuó buscando a su padre con la mirada pero no conseguía verlo, de modo que salió a su encuentro. Él había querido que demostrara su valía en los juegos. Canto del Río no sabía si lo había conseguido o no, pero había ganado la carrera. Pequeño Zorro la siguió en la distancia pero Canto del Río le dijo que se fuera a jugar. Luego se le acercó Arco Gracioso y habría sido descortés decirle que se marchara. —He visto que Camina con Pumas te ha favorecido —dijo su prima. La voz de Arco Gracioso estaba llena de preguntas. —Sí, pero se ha burlado de Corredora Veloz. —Entonces todavía tienes sentimientos de amistad hacia ella —le dijo Arco Gracioso mientras la sujetaba del brazo. ¡Canto del Río la echaba tanto de menos! —No tenía la intención de ganar, simplemente quería terminar la carrera junto a ella. —No estés disgustada, prima. A veces no podemos decir y hacer todo que quisiéramos. —El matrimonio te ha convertido en una mujer más sabia. — Canto del Río sonrió. No aceptó la invitación de su prima para ver juntas la carrera masculina. No participaban tantos hombres en la carrera, ya que muchos se habían casado. Seguramente ganaría Camina con Puma, de modo que Canto del Río ascendió la colina al norte del poblado desde donde podría contemplar una etapa de la carrera. Quería sentarse y hablar con Arco Gracioso, saber lo que su prima pensaba sobre la tensión que se respiraba en la tribu. Su madre, Canto del Árbol, habría podido darle sabios consejos sobre la manera de expresar sus emociones, ya que conocía bien los asuntos que preocupaban a las mujeres, mientras que su padre los desconocía. ¿Por qué tenía aquellos sentimientos contradictorios hacia Camina con Pumas? En sus oídos todavía resonaban las palabras de reproche hacia Corredora Veloz. Aquello también la confundía. ¿Por qué había dejado que la adelantara para ganar? Quizá Corredora Veloz no había querido que Canto del Río viera la vergüenza en sus ojos. —No hablaré sobre ello —exclamó Canto del Río mientras contemplaba el poblado preguntándose dónde estaría Corredora Veloz. Otra preocupación mayor ocupaba sus pensamientos, como una tormenta en el horizonte. ¿Y si la gente tuviera razón? ¿Y si se convertía en jefe de la aldea y no pudiera casarse con Camina con Pumas? Los hombres no veían con buenos ojos que se celebraran matrimonios entre el jefe de una aldea y el gran jefe. Decían que el liderazgo no estaría equilibrado pero estaban equivocados. Ella podría ser el jefe de la aldea de las cascadas y casarse con Camina con Pumas sin dejarse influenciar por él. Se mostraría fuerte para su gente. Había además otros dos jefes: uno provenía de la aldea del sur y otro de la aldea cercana al gran río, al oeste. Eso ayudaba a mantener en equilibrio el poder. Pero aquella era su vieja esperanza. En los últimos días sus deseos se habían desvanecido como la bruma matutina. ¿Qué deseaba en realidad? Se acordó del ciervo ciego que había visto en el bosque vagando lentamente. Posiblemente Camina con Pumas se casaría con Corredora Veloz aunque en realidad Canto del Río no estaba tan segura de que la fuera a tratar bien. Incluso dudaba de si sería un buen gran jefe pero aquello no se lo podía confesar a nadie. Si llegara a ser gran jefe y ella se convirtiera en jefe de su aldea, necesitaría de su amistad. Primero, Corredora Veloz se había convertido en su rival y ahora Camina con Pumas podía volverse también en su contra. ¡¿Cómo se atrevía?! Ella había viajado hasta al poblado principal para cantar, danzar y celebrar. Vio a más hombres abajo en el río, pescando con cañas, y decidió ayudarles a transportar el pescado una vez capturado. Seguía teniendo la responsabilidad de alimentar a la tribu, incluso durante los juegos de verano y aun siendo la hija de un jefe. —Hemos sido bendecidos este año —les dijo a modo de saludo. —El abuelo Salmón respeta al gran jefe —respondió uno de los guerreros. Ella dejó de lado sus preocupaciones y sus pensamientos contradictorios. No le interesaban a nadie. Acarrearon una gran cantidad de pescado, y Canto del Río enseguida entabló conversación con otras mujeres y jugó con los niños que correteaban por el lugar. —¿No eras amiga de Corredora Veloz? —le preguntó una mujer en voz baja. Canto del Río sabía que Cielo Matutino tenía buenas intenciones. Habían compartido su amistad cada verano y ahora ella tenía un esposo y dos hijos. —Sí, somos amigas. —¿Cómo podía hablar sobre la carrera sin manchar el honor de Corredora Veloz? —¿Entonces sabes a dónde ha ido después de la carrera? —¿Ha desaparecido? —Canto del Río se alejó de la orilla del río y corrió hacia la aldea. —¡Hija! —El jefe Piensa Sentado la detuvo. Al ver su angustia, no hablaron de la carrera. No obstante, le confirmó que nadie había visto a Corredora Veloz. Comenzó a buscarla, deteniéndose solo cuando se encontró con Camina con Pumas. —¿Estás buscando a Corredora Veloz? —Sí. —No debe haber ido muy lejos, ¡no con esas piernas tan lentas! Canto del Río se alejó corriendo. No quería lanzarle una mirada desafiante a Camina con Pumas pero se negaba a seguir escuchando sus necias palabras. El viejo roble, cuyas ramas eran perfectas para sentarse a contemplar los alrededores, se erguía sobre la cima de una colina. Allí se encontraba Corredora Veloz, tal y como había previsto, pero no se había subido al árbol. Canto del Río supuso que era debido a su lesión. —¿Dónde has estado? —Canto del Río sabía que tenía que hablar ahora que se habían encontrado. Tras mirarla de refilón, Corredora Veloz agachó la cabeza. —No puedo regresar al poblado —le replicó—. En todos estos años nunca había perdido una carrera. Canto del Río se sentó, distanciándose ligeramente de Corredora Veloz. —¡Has tropezado en un hoyo, lo he visto! Podrías haber ganado. —No, no es verdad. —La muchacha miró hacia otro lado—. Todos han escuchado las palabras de Camina con Pumas. Su padre no le ha permitido darme ese nombre por lástima. ¡Lástima!, ahora nunca querrá casarse conmigo. Ignorando su rivalidad, Canto del Río le preguntó: —¿Todavía lo quieres como esposo? —Así es como solían hablar cuando eran íntimas amigas, casi como hermanas. Corredora Veloz se puso en pie. —¿Es eso lo que pretendes ahora? Si se casa conmigo actuarás como si nunca hubieras querido casarte con él, pero yo sé que no es cierto. —Se marchó enojada. Canto del Río la siguió con la mirada pero no la llamó, sorprendida por su paso acelerado. Ya no se apoyaba sobre una sola pierna y ni siquiera cojeaba. Mientras Corredora Veloz desaparecía entre los árboles, Canto del Río se decía a sí misma que no había ningún motivo para haber fingido una lesión. Todos sabían que era la mujer más rápida de la tribu: ¡ya lo había demostrado en cuatro ocasiones! ¿Había pensado que, de una manera u otra, Canto del Río ganaría aquel año? Ella habría preferido perder una carrera justa en lugar de fingir una caída. Decidió ignorar aquella posibilidad. En su lugar, contempló las tierras que los rodeaban. El cielo azul se extendía hasta el confín de la tierra presidiendo las colinas y los valles mientras los arroyos resplandecían al deslizarse por las rocas y las cascadas. Los robles del valle se mezclaban gradualmente con los pinos y los cedros. El cedro era su árbol sagrado, les proporcionaba grandes planchas de madera con vetas uniformes. La madera de cedro amarillo era la más blanda, por lo que era utilizada para tallar cucharas y cuencos, pero el cedro rojo tenía vetas de mayor calidad, que cortaban en grandes planchas para construir sus casas y sus canoas. Los bebés dormían en cunas de cedro rojo. Lo empleaban también para tallar sus armas. Sacudían las tiras de cedro rojo y trenzaban la fibra para hacer alfombras, cestos y prendas de vestir. Un buen tejedor podía hacer una cesta para transportar agua. Tal vez algún día le daría a su hijo el nombre de aquel hermoso árbol que tantas cosas les proporcionaba: fuerza y flexibilidad. Sí, Árbol de Cedro sería el nombre perfecto para un líder. Percibió el ruido de unos pasos que pisaban las pequeñas ramas y la hierba seca, y se giró hacia el intruso, un joven guerrero al que tenía en gran estima. —Zorro Astuto, ¿estás de guardia? —Quería contemplar todo el paisaje. —Se acercó a ella—. Se te ve feliz desde que has ganado la carrera. Canto del Río deseaba que no se hubiese celebrado ninguna carrera. —No, hermanito. No sé qué pensar, no me siento como si realmente hubiese ganado. —Habían hablado en muchas ocasiones sobre asuntos que no compartía con nadie más porque confiaba en él y sabía que era sensato, pero pareció sorprendido al escuchar sus palabras. —¿No deseabas ganar? Ella no quería ceder. —No quería que Corredora Veloz perdiera de ese modo. —La gente no hace más que hablar de ti y de Corredora Veloz, y de Camina con Pumas. Muchas jóvenes quieren casarse con él. Canto del Río ya no era una de ellas. —Deseo lo que sea mejor para nuestra gente. En su rostro se dibujó una amplia y seductora sonrisa. —Entonces tal vez desees esperar por mí. —¡Oh, tú eres como un hermano para mí! —Le dio un cariñoso empujón—. Aunque a veces desearía que fueras mayor. Ojalá ya estuviera casada y con un bebé de camino. —Creo que te casarás con alguien más importante que Camina con Pumas. —Su sonrisa se desvaneció. —¿Y quién es más importante que Camina con Pumas? —Se sentía molesta—. Si eres tan sabio como siempre he pensado que eras, nunca más volverás a repetir esas palabras. No tienes ningún motivo para hablar mal sobre él, y si te escuchara.... no ganarías si tuvieras que luchar contra él. Él le replicó seriamente: —Canto del Río, no he querido decir eso. Él es fuerte y valeroso pero en algún lugar existe un hombre con una gran fuerza de espíritu. Ella no supo qué responder. Nadie hablaba así, excepto su curandero o sus líderes. —¿Qué quieres decir con en algún lugar? Hablas como si hubieras tenido un sueño. —He visto cosas pero no como en un sueño. Puedo oír a la gente del norte, sus batallas y también a las otras tribus. Veo con el pensamiento y creo que hay un hombre que guía a su propia gente, que será digno de casarse contigo. Permanecieron en silencio durante mucho tiempo, ya que ella no lograba comprender de dónde provenía su sabiduría. ¿Se convertiría en un soñador o en un curandero? —Es la hora de preparar la cena. —Se levantó y dejó que la siguiera hasta la aldea. —Estoy de tu parte, Canto del Río —le dijo Zorro Astuto mientras caminaban—.Tu padre actúa correctamente al querer convertirte en el líder de la aldea. Los guerreros de su aldea llevaron el salmón hasta la fogata. En la pradera se habían encendido otras hogueras, una en cada aldea. —¡Esta noche estamos de celebración! —Piensa Sentado, el jefe de la aldea, parecía orgulloso envuelto en su manta tejida en fibra de cedro, con sus largas trenzas blancas descansando sobre ella. Aquella noche dejaría de lado sus preocupaciones y disfrutaría de la celebración. Tal vez su padre se equivocaba y regresaría muchos veranos más, pero a lo largo de su vida se había equivocado en muy pocas ocasiones. Después de comer, cantaron y danzaron. Durante los últimos cuatro años, Corredora Veloz había ganado la carrera y su aldea había recibido los honores, pero aquella noche sería la aldea de Canto del Río la que tendría el honor de celebrar la victoria. Cuando vio la amplia sonrisa de su padre sintió encenderse en ella la primera chispa de la victoria. Aquella noche ella era la causa de su felicidad. Cuando las brasas se redujeron a ceniza y se hubo acostado, contempló la hoguera del poblado principal. La gente dormía mientras las llamas se iban apagando lentamente. Camina con Pumas también dormía y probablemente soñaba que se había convertido en jefe y podía casarse con cualquier mujer que deseara. Su bello rostro alargado flotaba en su visión nocturna. Sus prominentes pómulos otorgaban cierta inclinación a sus ojos, que siempre parecían divertidos. Con su pecho erguido y los hombros hacia atrás, se reía de la vida. Quizás ese debería haber sido su nombre. Le encantaba eso de él, al menos, hasta que se había burlado de su amiga. No recordaba que se hubiera reído de ella cuando había quedado en segundo lugar durante los últimos cuatro años. El segundo lugar parecía más fácil de digerir. Una mano la agarró del hombro con firmeza. Dio un brinco, mientras intentaba agarrar un palo que estaba cerca. —¡Canto del Río!, soy Ojos de ciervo, ¡shh! –¡No he dicho nada! —Se levantó y se alejó sigilosamente de la hoguera, haciéndole un gesto al guerrero para que la siguiera. No era correcto que un amigo de Camina con Pumas la visitara—. ¿Qué quieres? —He venido como amigo. Deseo que Camina con Pumas se case contigo. —Oh, ¿no has venido para llevarme a escondidas? —Se sentó con las piernas cruzadas deseando haber traído su manta. ¿Por qué había venido a decirle aquello? Él se irguió rígidamente y dijo: —No te burles de mí. Amo a Corredora Veloz y me siento obligado a hablar después de lo que ha acontecido hoy. Al escuchar sus palabras, se preguntó si se sentía molesto con ella por haber ganado. No había sido su intención herir los sentimientos de su amiga. Le hizo una señal para que se sentara junto a ella y le preguntó: —¿Por qué has venido a hablar conmigo en medio de la noche? —Observó cómo miraba a su alrededor antes de sentarse frente a ella. Era robusto, especialmente alrededor de los hombros, y había recibido su nombre debido a sus grandes ojos oscuros. Eran de una profundidad infinita y la miraban expectantes, como los ojos de un ciervo, pero Canto del Río nunca había visto en ellos ningún atisbo de sabiduría. Seguía a Camina con Pumas como si fuera su sombra. —Deseo casarme con Corredora Veloz, de modo que tú debes casarte con Camina con Pumas. Aunque se sentía honrada de que hubiera acudido a ella en busca de ayuda, sabía que no podía ejercer control sobre esas cosas. —¿Por qué no hablas con Corredora Veloz? —No piensa en otra cosa que no sea casarse con él. —Se le cayeron los hombros mientras lo admitía. A cualquier hombre le habría resultado difícil decir algo así. —¿Crees que lo hará? —Canto del Río pensaba más en su amiga que en su antiguo deseo de casarse con Camina con Pumas. Ojos de Ciervo, como amigo íntimo de Camina con Pumas, podía conocer mejor sus intenciones. —Dice que todavía no se ha decidido. El jefe Relámpago Azul no lo está empujando en ninguna dirección. Hasta ahora ningún padre se ha presentado con un regalo para persuadirlo. Algunos se preguntan si se casará con la vencedera de los juegos, no sé a qué espera. Pensó en diversas posibilidades pero no deseaba compartir ninguna de ellas con un amigo íntimo de Camina con Pumas. —¿Y si ya no deseara casarme con él? —Casi rompió a reír cuando pensó en la cara que pondría Camina con Pumas cuando Ojos de Ciervo le contara lo que había dicho. —¿Por qué no querrías hacerlo? —Se acercó en la oscuridad con un gesto de extrañeza en el rostro. Parecía como si no pudiera creer lo que había oído. —Me convertiré en jefe de mi aldea, tal vez no necesite un esposo que me debilite. —¿Lograría entenderlo? Hablaba como un hombre, como uno de los líderes de su aldea, y probablemente tendría que vivir como un líder. Una vida solitaria. Se levantó y se alejó de él. Capítulo tres A la mañana siguiente, mientras se dirigían hacia el río, Canto del Río tuvo que ayudar a su padre en tres ocasiones. En el pasado nunca había tenido que ayudarlo a caminar y solo ahora se daba cuenta de lo débil que se había vuelto. Cuando se sentaron en la orilla del río, Piensa Sentado guardó silencio y Canto del Río pensó que estaba sumido en sus propios pensamientos, como había visto hacer a menudo a otros ancianos. —Guardas silencio, pero tus pensamientos te están consumiendo —le dijo él. Al instante sacudió la cabeza e intentó esbozar una sonrisa, pero enseguida vio el rostro preocupado de su padre. —Ahora debo pensar en tantas cosas... —He escuchado los comentarios, hija. Te he pedido que vinieras aquí para que podamos hablar de ello. Canto del Río necesitaba desesperadamente su consejo. —He pensado mucho en Corredora Veloz y en Camina con Pumas. He tenido malos pensamientos hacia el hijo del gran jefe. —No quería confesarle todo lo que se le había pasado por la cabeza. Algunos de aquellos pensamientos le pertenecían solo a ella y no los compartiría con nadie más—. He hablado con Zorro Astuto y sus palabras me han impresionado. Me ha hablado de los guerreros más allá de la montaña. —¿Tiene la intención de viajar hasta allí? —Él cree que serán ellos los que acudan a este lugar. —Vio como su padre fruncía el ceño, aunque no dijo nada. El paso de los años había surcado de arrugas su rostro—. No ha hablado de combates como hacen los otros guerreros, pero cree que entre ellos habrá uno lo suficientemente valeroso como para casarse conmigo. El jefe de la aldea continuó en silencio. —No es algo inusual, padre, tú mismo te casaste con una mujer que procedía del otro lado de la montaña. —No considero que eso sea algo negativo. Permanezco en silencio mientras pienso. Nunca habías mencionado antes a otro guerrero que no fuera Camina con Pumas y ahora me hablas de uno que ni siquiera has visto. —Podría tratarse del sueño de una chiquilla, no estoy segura, pero sus palabras me han hecho pensar que existen otras alternativas. No podía permitir que la vieran tan enojada. Se detuvo alrededor de los árboles y observó cómo todos rodeaban a Corredora Veloz en el claro del bosque. Sostenía un conejo en el aire mientras danzaba. Source text - English International Federation of Aromatherapists ASSOCIATE CENTRE TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1) Applications for Centre Approval shall be treated as an offer to enter into an agreement with the IFA, but shall not be binding on the IFA. 2) This agreement comes into effect from the commencement date of approval, confirmed in writing by the IFA and is enforceable until the Centre ceases to be approved or is terminated earlier in accordance with these terms. 3) The Centre will register all learners enrolled on their approved course as student’s members with the IFA within three (3) months of approval being granted. 4) The Centre will register six (6) students per year with the IFA. NB. For associate centres, student registration is £25.00 per student for 12 months. 5) The Centre will ensure the Centre owner and its tutor(s) involved in delivering the approved course are registered with the IFA as members throughout its approval term and thereby bound by the IFA’s member terms and conditions. 6) The Centre will have appropriate insurance in place to cover all aspects of training. 7) The Centre will inform the IFA immediately if any details on their application form changes. 8) IFA associate centre approval is based on prior approval and regulation by ofqual. Any complaints raised regarding associate centres will be referred back to their original regulator. 9) The Centre will inform the IFA immediately if any sanctions are applied by their regulator and/or recommendations given. 10) The Centre will ensure that any and all marketing relating to IFA approved status for associate centres is legal, accurate and honest. 11) The Centre will ensure that the IFA Associate Centre logo is only applied to marketing/web pages relating to the IFA approved course only. 12) The Centre will make any amendments to promotional material of associate approved status if requested to by the IFA. 13) The Centre will declare its business interest on an annual basis and complete the Conflict of Interest Annual Declaration Form for review before approval is extended. 14) The Centre will pay any applicable fee(s) and renewal fee(s) thirty (30) days prior to the due date. 15) The Centre’s approved status may be withdrawn if any of these terms and conditions are not met. 16) Any required approval and renewal fee(s) are non-refundable under any circumstance. 17) The Centre will remove all reference to IFA approved status from all documents and web pages, if the Centre withdraws from approval or does not choose to renew their approved status and return the Associate Centre certificate within 30 days. Source text - English TEACHER APPROVAL CRITERIA August 2018 1. INTRODUCTION Thank you for your interest in delivering an IFA Qualification and becoming an IFA Teacher at one of our approved centres. We are delighted to guide you through the quality assurance process. To deliver an IFA Qualification(s) at an IFA approved Centre, the individual must register as a teacher for the IFA Qualification they are applying to deliver and meet the criteria of the category of teacher status they are applying. Supporting information is also provided on how to meet those requirements. 2. TEACHER CATEGORIES & CRITERIA There are three categories of teacher status dependent on experience. Each category allows the applicant to accrue valuable experience and develop their training skills. PRINCIPAL TEACHER Only Principal teachers are able to deliver an IFA Qualification (minimum of 75% of the course). The criteria are as follows: • Qualification in Aromatherapy equal or higher than the course they will be delivering. • Qualified in Aromatherapy at least five (5) years or more from date of application. • Held continuous IFA FULL membership or postgraduate IFA membership in the qualification they wish to deliver for a minimum of three (3) years or equivalent. • Hold a teachers qualification. £125.00 ASSISTANT TEACHER Assistant teachers are able to deliver 25% of an IFA Qualification supervised by a Principal teacher. Assistant teachers have two (2 years) from the date of approval to upgrade to Principal teacher status. Teachers’ applications to upgrade must be supported and counter-signed by their Principal Teacher in their capacity as mentor. The criteria are as follows: • Qualification in Aromatherapy equal or higher than the course they will be delivering. • Qualified in Aromatherapy at least three (3) years or more from date of application. • Held continuous IFA FULL membership or postgraduate IFA membership in the qualification they wish to deliver for a minimum of two (2) years. • Hold a teachers qualification. • Name an appointed principal teacher who you will shadow and who will monitor your performance. £100.00 TRAINEE TEACHER Trainee teachers will shadow Assistant teachers. Trainee teachers have two (2 years) from the date of approval to upgrade to Assistant teacher status. Teacher’s applications to upgrade must be supported and counter-signed by their Assistant Teacher in their capacity as mentor. The requirements are as follows: • Qualification in Aromatherapy equal or higher than the course they will be delivering. • Qualified in Aromatherapy at least two (2) years or more from date of application. • Held IFA FULL membership or postgraduate IFA membership in the qualification they wish to deliver for a minimum of one (1) year. • Undergoing a teachers qualification • Name an appointed Assistant or Principal teacher who you will shadow and who will monitor your performance. £75.00 3. HOW TO MEET THE REQUIRED STANDARDS SUBJECT PROFICIENCY The individual delivering an IFA qualification must hold the same, equivalent or higher qualification than the one they are applying to teach and assess and is therefore eligible for IFA postgraduate membership. Types of evidence include:  IFA Qualification Certificate e.g. Aromatherapy Diploma, PEOT, Aromacare  IFA Membership number  A copy of Qualification/Certificate(s) that are consistent with the IFA course components. Please download and complete a copy of the Accredited Prior Learning (APL) mapping questionnaire, which identifies the learning and assessment requirements - in order to qualify for full membership. Sample teaching notes will be requested of Centres when they apply to become an approved Centre. A Centre may, as part of their employment contract, request that the tutor produce these notes or provide them to the teacher, which is between the tutor and their employer. SUBJECT EXPERIENCE The applicant must have held their qualification in aromatherapy for the amount of years specified for the category of teacher for which they are applying. Types of evidence include:  IFA Qualification Certificate e.g. Aromatherapy Diploma, PEOT, Aromacare  Other Qualification Certificate(s) awarded as ‘of equal’  IFA Membership number REGULATORY COMPLIANCE To assure itself that individuals awarded teacher status have a history of conforming to regulatory standards the applicant must either:  Have held IFA postgraduate membership for 3 years or more or  Provide evidence of having belonged to another appropriate professional membership body for 3 years or more. NB. If the applicant has not held continuous IFA membership for the required years then the applicant must join the IFA membership at the required level and apply after the respective period. Membership cannot be backdated for the previous ‘unregulated’ time period. The IFA will consider applicants’ who have held membership with other governing bodies during the time elapse where appropriate. TEACHERS QUALIFICATION The individual applying must hold a teachers qualification. Examples of teaching qualification we accept include:  IFA Teacher Training Course Certificate,  B.Ed.;  Dip.Ed;  PTLLS (City & Guilds 7303),  CTLLS (City & Guilds 7304),  DTLLS (City & Guilds PGCE);  Train the Trainer Award;  other City and Guilds Certificates of Education (7306, 7307, 7321; 7407};  relevant learning & development units or N/SVQ/QCF provision. Other comparable qualification supported by a copy of the course outline and relevant CPD. TEACHING EXPERIENCE If you have experience teaching or lecturing in aromatherapy or allied subjects then you will need to provide details to support your application. Types of evidence include:  CV  Completion of the Teacher Application Form If the applicant is inexperienced or has not undertaken the IFA Qualification(s) of which they are applying to teach and are therefore unfamiliar with our curriculum, the IFA may also:  Interview the person by telephone  Refer them to IFA teacher training  Request that the applicant supply a DVD or USB evidencing their teaching in progress (1 hour maximum); this will include a cross section of subjects taught (4 x 15 minutes). If translation is required the onus is on the applicant to supply an English interpreter. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. I haven’t trained on an IFA course and do not meet the subject proficiency requirements what do I need to do? A. If an applicant’s qualifications fall short of the required criteria, the applicant will need to either undertake an upgrade course or dependent on the applicants’ previous experience this may also be completed via supervision. The IFA will be able to advise once we are in receipt of your application. The IFA considers each applicant’s suitability according to the applicant’s merits, previous training, knowledge and experience. The minimum criteria to upgrade qualifications is a level 3 Aromatherapy Qualification and above, validated by an external examining body, which meets the national occupational standards (NOS). Otherwise the difference in course content will be too great to bridge and the applicant will be advised to undertake the IFA Qualification(s) in which they are applying to teach. Q. I do not hold a teachers qualification what can I do? A. You can request that an IFA representative visit your premises to undertake IFA teacher training (costs payable by the applicant) or you can source other providers who offer teacher training qualifications, as per the examples provided above. Other comparable qualification supported by a copy of the course outline and relevant CPD may also be accepted so please ensure you supply as much information as possible on your application form. Q. I have experience teaching but not specifically in aromatherapy. Can I still apply? A. Yes as long as you meet the subject proficiency requirements. We recommend you enrol on an IFA teacher training course which teaches you specifically how to teach an IFA qualification. Q. How do I know if I my qualification is equal to the course I am applying to teach? A. You will need to complete the Accredited Prior Learning (APL) mapping questionnaire, which breaks down the subject content of each module and unit incorporated within the IFA Diploma course. Completion of the questionnaire and supply of supplementary evidence, will enable you to identify areas already covered during prior learning and areas requiring further development. CÓMO CUMPLIR CON LOS ESTÁNDARES EXIGIDOS COMPETENCIA EN LA MATERIA La persona interesada en impartir una Certificación IFA deberá poseer una certificación que sea igual, equivalente o superior a la que deseen impartir y evaluar, y podrá optar a la membresía de postgrado de la IFA. Pruebas documentales incluyen:  Certificación IFA (Diploma de Aromaterapia, PEOT, Aromacare)  Número de socio IFA  Una copia del título(s) que sea coherente con los componentes del curso IFA. Descargue y rellene una copia del cuestionario de acreditación de la experiencia previa (APL, por sus siglas en inglés) que identifica los requisitos de aprendizaje y evaluación para convertirse en miembro de pleno derecho. Los Centros que soliciten convertirse en Centros homologados deberán entregar una muestra del material didáctico en el momento de presentar su solicitud. Cualquier Centro puede exigir, como parte de su contrato, que el tutor prepare dicho material didáctico o se lo entregue al profesor, esto quedará entre el tutor y su empleador. EXPERIENCIA EN LA MATERIA El demandante deberá estar en posesión de un Diploma Profesional en Aromaterapia durante el tiempo estipulado para la categoría de profesor en la que presente su candidatura. En caso de ser necesaria una traducción, será responsabilidad del demandante facilitar un intérprete de inglés. PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES P. No he seguido ningún curso de formación IFA y no cumplo con los requisitos de competencia de la asignatura. ¿Qué debo hacer? R. Cuando las calificaciones fueran muy distintas de las requeridas, los demandantes deberán realizar un curso de actualización o, dependiendo de su experiencia previa, podrá también complementarse con la supervisión. La IFA podrá asesorarle en cuanto haya recibido su solicitud. La IFA considerará la idoneidad de cada demandante según sus méritos, capacitación previa, conocimiento y experiencia. El requisito mínimo para actualizar la titulación es haber obtenido un Certificado en Aromaterapia de nivel 3 y superior, validado por un organismo examinador externo, que cumpla con los estándares ocupacionales nacionales (NOS, por sus siglas en inglés). En caso de no cumplir dicho requisito, recomendamos al demandante que obtenga la Certificación IFA relevante a su candidatura, de lo contrario les resultará difícil superar el curso. P. No tengo un título de profesor, ¿qué puedo hacer? R. Puede solicitar que un representante de la IFA visite sus instalaciones para impartir un curso de formación del profesorado IFA (costos a cargo del demandante) o puede buscar otros proveedores que ofrezcan títulos de formación docentes, como los ejemplos mencionados anteriormente. También podemos aceptar otros títulos equivalentes acompañados por la documentación relativa al contenido del curso y el desarrollo profesional continuo (DPC). Source text - English AROMACARE ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE 1) During the assessment, the Examiner will: observe learners practical skills, observe learners competency and observe learners work e.g. assignments, case studies. 2) Marks for the assessment are ‘pass’ or ‘refer’. 3) The Centre will book an Aromacare assessment with the IFA six (6) months in advance. 4) Aromacare assessment are held at the Centre premises. 5) Overseas assessments should only be requested when other examinations are being organised in the same country or region to significantly reduce the costs incurred by the Centre. The IFA can then efficiently manage the costs and the time incurred by arranging collective examinations during one period. The IFA will inform the Centre of months and dates examiner are visiting their country. 6) In the exceptional circumstance where examinations are not scheduled during the requested period, the Centre will be required to pay for the examiners return flight from the UK in addition to internal travel and accommodation. If the Centre books the examiners hotel, it must be a European Hotel, include breakfast and Wi-Fi and be rated a minimum of 4 stars. 7) The maximum number of learners who can partake in an Aromacare Assessment is sixteen (16). On the day 8) Each student will be allocated an area where their portfolio and artefacts can be assessed by the examiner. 9) The schedule for the assessment is as follows: a) Work area prepared i.e. ‘clients’ and carers in place at the start of assessment. b) The examiner will introduce themselves and explain the assessment procedure. c) Each carer will introduce themselves, their client and briefly explain their background. d) Carers will meet and greet their ‘clients’ and conduct a consultation. e) The examiner will observe two (2) massage techniques/stories. f) The examiner will then inspect carer’s portfolios and artefacts. 10) The Centre will not enter a learner into an examination without ALL completed coursework. 11) Examiners will complete an assessment report and the IFA will inform the Centre of the result.	Translation - Spanish PROCEDIMIENTO DE EVALUACIÓN DE AROMACARE 1) Durante la evaluación el Examinador observará: las habilidades prácticas de los estudiantes, sus aptitudes y los trabajos realizados mediante la valoración de tareas y casos prácticos. 2) Los resultados de la evaluación serán "apto" o "no apto". 3) El Centro concertará con la IFA una fecha para la evaluación de Aromacare con seis (6) meses de antelación. 4) La evaluación de Aromacare se llevará a cabo en las instalaciones del Centro. 5) Las evaluaciones en el extranjero podrán solicitarse únicamente cuando se estén organizando otros exámenes en el mismo país o región con el fin de reducir significativamente los costes contraídos por el Centro. La IFA podrá organizar exámenes colectivos durante un periodo para optimizar sus costes y gestionar el tiempo invertido de forma más eficaz. La IFA informará al Centro de los meses y las fechas en las que el examinador visitará su país. 6) En el caso excepcional de que los exámenes no estén programados durante el período solicitado, el Centro deberá pagar los vuelos de regreso de los examinadores desde el Reino Unido, además de los viajes internos y el alojamiento. Si el Centro gestiona la reserva del hotel para los examinadores, este deberá ser un hotel europeo que incluya desayuno, Wi-Fi y que tenga una calificación mínima de 4 estrellas. 7) El número máximo de alumnos que pueden participar en una evaluación de Aromacare es de dieciséis (16). En el día 8) A cada estudiante se le asignará un área donde el examinador podrá evaluar su portafolio y sus artefactos. 9) A continuación detallamos el programa de la evaluación: a) Preparación del área de trabajo: «clientes» y cuidadores deberán estar preparados al inicio de la evaluación. b) Presentación del examinador y explicación del procedimiento de evaluación. c) Presentación de los cuidadores y sus clientes y breve explicación de sus antecedentes profesionales. d) Encuentro de los cuidadores con sus «clientes» y realización de una consulta. e) El examinador observará dos (2) técnicas de masaje/historias. f) A continuación, el examinador inspeccionará los portafolios y artefactos del cuidador. 10) El Centro no permitirá que un alumno se presente al examen sin haber completado TODOS los cursos. 11) Los examinadores redactarán un informe de evaluación y la IFA informará al Centro del resultado.
