New Company Strengthening Animation Exportation
On the 19th it was confirmed that in order to bolster the competitiveness of Japanese movies and anime in the world market, the public-private partnership, Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, would establish a new company. This company will handle the planning, production, and distribution of movies and anime, starting as early as this summer. It will be responsible for finding screenplays and ideas, from individuals or Japanese companies, and creating new film and anime projects from them. This company will scout capable people from Hollywood to better its “Know-How” of production and distribution; and use this to expand the market for Japanese media in developing countries.
Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, New Establishment
The company, which will be based in American and Japan, will receive a base capital of five billion yen (about 64 million USD) from the INCJ. Their objective is to create about 10 hit projects, in its first five years, each within the millions sale range. Together with cooperating Hollywood companies, they will work on the planning of the movies and anime that will be produced. Their plan is to exhibit and distribute first in America, then export to other developing markets.
Production, exports, and marketing will be based in Hollywood, in order to compensate for the deficiencies of the Japanese media industry. Software created in Japan serves as a popular symbol of “Cool Japan,” in America, Europe, and across Asia. However, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, in its initial phase, circulation of illegal pirated software, low prices, etc. made it so that Japan did not make an adequate profit. The INCJ has determined that the company needs to head towards strengthening its discovery, planning, sales, and copyright of media.
