My expertise in Russian to English translation has been gained from eight years of experience in the field and over five years living and working in the Russian Federation. This followed a university degree in Russian studies from the University of Leeds, UK.
My years living in the Russian Federation began with an academic year (9 months) in Moscow State University in 1998-1999. Not long after finishing university in 2001 I returned to Russia, beginning with a six month stint in Krasnodar, but then moving to Moscow and remaining there for another four years.
Throughout my time in Moscow I worked as a freelance translator for various Moscow based translation agencies. I completed many projects on a variety of topics, including: oil and gas; public relations; advertising. Also, I completed the translation for a range of legal documents, typically for joint ventures and M&As - contracts, MoUs etc.
I would say that my chief strengths in translations ( the things I bring to translation which add value to my work) include an attention to detail and advanced research skills. Both factors are certainly dependent on each other – you can’t have one without the other. The fields of Russian to English translation (legal, financial, oil and gas, technical, IT, etc.) possess a range of language and vocabulary that can sometimes prove esoteric and uncommon even for those specialists trained in such particular fields. The challenge of finding the appropriate vocabulary match is something I have learned to love and it is a skill I have perfected over the last few years.
