Quote Dec 20, 2011

I looked up the quote referenced above. Briefly, it reads:

"...when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do... to be honored by others."

Absolutely Dec 20, 2011

I "donated" money to a couple of different governments through taxes. These governments will use my money for a plethora of good causes: anti-poverty, anti-hunger, anti-sickness, anti-inequality, anti-hate, etc.

I have put my money in good hands and can now proudly proclaim: I donated.

Yes, and translating has made me donate more! Dec 20, 2011

I am also a Kiva supporter, and this year I have helped small farmers in Bolivia and Armenia. I am giving myself a Christmas present of another 25 dollar Kiva loan so I can help two people at a time next year.

I have also made donations to causes I have come across while translating! - Une Option de Plus, an Ecuadorian charity, for whom I also provide pro bono translations, and a woman undertaking a sponsored cycle ride of 2500 km for breast cancer.

I enjoy supporting these causes, because I feel that I'm making an impact on the positive side, even in a very small way. If everybody who could afford it did the same relative to their own personal fortune, the world would be a much better place.

Even when you've got very little money you can always help in some way - buying your clothes from charity shops, for instance, or getting an extra tin of catfood to give to the local cat's home.

The list is endless... but not just money Dec 20, 2011

I do a lot of 'in kind' donations. So, for example, I cooked two paellas and a number of other dishes for the South Hayward Parish, a 501(c) 3 organization on whose board I sit. When I got married in July, all of the gifts were given to the SHP and we were actually able to raise $6,000.00. I have a number of other organizations to whom I contribute cash as I can (Amnesty Int'l., Partners in Health, SOA Watch (soaw.org), KPFA, among others, but I have also been donating my time as a simultaneo... I have a number of other organizations to whom I contribute cash as I can (Amnesty Int'l., Partners in Health, SOA Watch (soaw.org), KPFA, among others, but I have also been donating my time as a simultaneous/consecutive interpreter (Labor Notes, SOAW, various progressive political candidates ). I also began to cook for Occupy Oakland and Occupy SF. For Occupy Oakland this involved bringing cooked food (12 quarts of lentil soup, 5 quarts of pinto bean soup, a vegan paella, which I thought was awful but they loved) 4-5 times per week and helping to serve the food to the people there.

I personally think in this economy, we are lucky to be able to have a shelter and food... In Hayward, 80% of all children live at or below poverty level. Our Food Pantry is now serving close to 13,000 meals a month... We are seeing communities that would never go to a food pantry, including many Asians, many many elderly folk, and lately, even unemployed union members, who are terribly embarrassed about being in this predicament... We have many homeless individuals who are living either on the streets or in their cars... and so in the face of this, I would not be able to live myself if I didn't do something, although it is never enough...

Good Samaritans Dec 21, 2011

In my experience, everyone needs a good samaritan at some point or is glad they're around to help others, so this is the group I've been giving to since I moved to Germany in 1982 (Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund). Wikipedia. The list of the rest that I donate to every year has gradually grown up around my experiences and the people I've known.

One I came across via a work connection is Trees for the Future, which reminds me of my father's great interest in trees. I support it through mokugift.com - an app for donating to the 12 billion trees campaign. (No pestering by mail.) Managed trees aren't the same as a natural forest but can still have an amazing restorative impact.

With Nicole Dec 21, 2011

I donate for 2 local Red Cross organizations.

Nicole Schnell wrote:

I have become a bit allergic to writing checks or making donations over the phone. Why? Because once you are on any charity organization's list, you will be bombarded and terrorized on the phone or my mail over and over and for years to come.

Every year shortly before Christmas my husband would receive some Christmas cards and a transfer form from a charity organization, with which he registered some 25 years ago. He indeed feels pressurized to donate money for them because of the cards he never needs.

God cherishes donations for people in need, especially when they are made by free choice....

I don't consider any of the previous posts "bragging". Quite the opposite - I gained new ideas. What does donating and charity have to do with "trumpets"?

Compassionate Friends Dec 22, 2011

I support several charities, such as The Compassionate Friends of Bereaved Parents and Siblings (www.compassionatefriends.org). It's a good organization where people can provide each other support, as they are the only ones who truly understand each other's pain.
