Hello all,

I have asked this question in a different thread, but the problem is different, after all, so I'm starting a new topic.

Hello all,

I have asked this question in a different thread, but the problem is different, after all, so I'm starting a new topic.

First, my PC works with Windows XP and Office 2003.

I have the new SDL Trados Suite 2007 (with the brand new patch) and am actually quite happy with it, and despite negative responses from other users, I like Synergy!
It is working fine for me, except for one particular Word document. I have since loaded other Word docs without any problems, so it must be something to do with this doc!
It has about 50 pages, contains some graphics, text fields, header/footer, and has that numbered format, where it creates an index at the beginning of the document (can't think of what it's called right now...), but even after taking everything out (graphics, text fields, header/footer and the index at the beginning), Synergy won't load it. I create a new project, and when it comes to converting the Word doc, my PC works like crazy and in the end delivers this error: "Unexpected error using plug-in file filter".
I have tried opening the document directly in TagEditor, but it just freezes up or gives me the same message. Opening it in Word and working with Workbench seems to work (I only did a few sentences), but I don't like doing that, because Workbench has the tendency to change the formatting on you, and then you have to manually fix it, which is very time-consuming! I really prefer working with TagEditor!!!
Has anyone had a similar problem and/or an idea what to do?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!

Hi Anke,
first of all, let me point out that you will not like Synergy anymore once you find out how much of your HDD space the Synergy projects eat up, let alone all the time... I only use Synergy if I need to convert a bunch of 50+ files to TTX.

But to your question:
- you could try editing the file directly in Word which, however, is not a good idea considering the document layout you mentioned;
- you could try saving your DOC file as RTF, then open the RTF and save it as DOC again; try to open this new DOC file with TagEditor. Don't attempt to open the RTF, as the file will probably be huge (I suppose 100+ MB).

A simple trick Nov 29, 2008

saved me many times from mysterious errors caused by Word docs: open the doc in Open Office and re-save again as a Word doc.

That trick works for Powerpoint documents too Nov 29, 2008

OpenOffice also solves similar problems with Powerpoint. Even if you don't use OpenOffice, it's worth installing it just to fix these kind of glitches.

unfortunately the trick doesn't work Nov 29, 2008

Thanks, Natalie, but I tried it and it doesn't work. Both the TagEditor and Synergy simply shut down when I try to load the openoffice-word doc.

Yeah - solution found!!! Nov 29, 2008

Ok, I figured out how to get around this problem:

I opened the document in Word, saved it as xml-file, created an ini-file for it, and that did the trick! I can now open it both directly in TagEditor and create a project with Synergy!!
It takes a while for it to load, but - it works!!!!

Sorry! Dec 3, 2008

For some reason I didn't see the other answers besides Natalie's until now?! Thank you ALL for your suggestions!

@Stanislav: You're right, the projects do take a lot of space?! But I like tracking my progress etc. with Synergy, so I guess I'll keep working with it, but cleaning out the project file every month.
