SPAIN. I'd like to brainstorm this cycling metaphor, to see if anyone comes up with anything better than my own rather lukewarm effort, which for the moment I prefer to keep under my hat.

“El productor … apuesta por el deporte con fines solidarios, con la organización de una carrera de ciclismo de 4,440 kilómetros para ayudar a las personas mayores. … con una motivación muy especial de recaudar fondos para la ONG … La asociación dá servicios a los mayores en riesgo de exclusión social a golpe de pedaleada y cumplir un sueño deportivo y personal."

I'm quite familar with the expression "a golpe de.." and I like it. My problem is finding an equivalent that sounds as neat in English as it does in Spanish.

Pedaling is the indicator for bicycling. In Mexico we use a phrase "a golpe de calcetín", which loosely means hitting my socks on the pavement... walking, a golpe de tacón, hitting my heel on the pavement - walking. It is just figure of speech.

neutral Cinnamon Nolan : I like the metaphor, but it's more usually applied to cars (gas pedal) -and that's what came to mind immediately- so I don't think it goes too well here.

Maybe you could rephrase the sentence. "With this cycling initiative the association will help older people at risk of social exclusion whilst at the same time realise a sporting and personal dream." Something along those lines.

You'd have to recast the sentence to fit this in, but it might work. Something like this:

The association offers cyclists the chance to pedal their way to providing services for elderly people at risk of social exclusion while fulfilling a sporting and personal dream.

I'm sure that can be tweaked and improved, but something along those lines maybe?

(BrE) beating a path in tandem

Tandem = two-bike

Perhaps the pedal metaphor is not abs. necessary.

Pumping the pedals means nowt in the UK where tires/ tyres are pumped up.
Example sentence:

Riding a normal, single-rider bicycle is a very rewarding experience, but a tandem bicycle adds a whole new dimension to cycling
