There is no English equivalent for this word. A bird has no cheeks, but this word is the closest approximation. In translating, if the original Portuguese word is used, the explanation should be included. Otherwise, "cheek" gives the closest thing to a correct idea.

I am mistaken. There is as you say an English word "lore" borrowed from the Latin "lorum" which serves as a label for the part of the anatomy mentioned, in both birds and the equivalent area on snakes.
