intentionally and sparingly

I think this text is about both using it with intention to draw the eye, which also requires that it can't be used too liberally, so that the focus is naturally drawn to the white.

Some relevant examples:

Also, it might be better to reorder it as "sparingly and intentionally", as this appears to be the most used sentence order for this concept. Google also yielded a considerable amount of hits. Here are a couple of links:
