Christine Morgan Jul 31, 2009:
How about "open air dining" or seating area /dining "alfresco" We use this word (alfresco) - its in the Oxford dictionary and its sounds more sophisticated
Floriana Leary Jul 31, 2009:
In the US you refer to 'esplanada' as a terrace, there are over 7 million findings on google images, I have posted 2 links with my posting...take a look...hope this helps
Elvira Alves Barry Jul 31, 2009:
You could also use "outdoor café". I know in the U.S. I've also seen the French term "esplanade" used.
Soraia Martins (asker) Jul 31, 2009:
Well, perhaps you can help a bit more: this is going to be on a restaurant menu, and they have an indoor saloon and a "esplanada". I'm not sure if "sidewalk café" would fit... Or maybe it would! Thank you all :)

Thank you Claudia, have a great afternoon!
neutral Amy Duncan (X) : I did a bunch of tourism translations from Portugal that had this term, and the translation was "sidewalk cafe," not "terrace"

Amy, sidewalk cafe is fine if it's just for a cafe, however if its a restaurant, sidewalk cafe is not the correct English term, so the asker has asked for a general term for cafes and restaurant which is TERRACE

dining alfresco/seating alfresco

seating area /dining "alfresco" We use this borrowed Italian word (alfresco) - its in the Oxford dictionary and its sounds more sophisticated
Example sentence:

The restaurant offered alfresco dining

Peer comment(s):

agree isveco : or just outdoor dining area for a less sophisticated option:)

Thanks . Yes I suppose it depends on how you want to market it-Outdoor or open air dining and indoor salon could work
