Portuguese term

fisga

Portuguese to English Social Sciences Fisheries
"Meu avó praticava uma modalidade de pesca que era a de fisga, meu pai pescou de rede, eu já me identifiquei mais com a pesca de linha, com a pesca artesanal."

Speaker is probably from RJ or ES.

I did find the following ref,

Exato, Elizabeth. No Brasil é muito comum a expressão 'fisgar um peixe'.

Note: "Fisgar" can also be used as a verb: Fisguei um peixe = I "got" a fish.

harpoon

Harpoons are time-honored tools for fishing, particularly in the Brazilian Amazon, where we served for ten years. "Fisga" was frequently used to mean "harpoon" by villagers. Porto Editora and Ximenes dictionaries agree, as does your ref.
Example sentence:

Mergulhou, lançou a fisga, pegou um tucunaré.

He dove down, released the harpoon, and got a peacock bass.

neutral Gilmar Fernandes : This is not the European PT "fisga" which would be "estilingue" in BR-PT. See http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estilingue
