I don't really have a context. I have a report about a presentation given at a conference and the guy says that the person before him was a Mitarbeiter eines „Marktbegleiters“. What is a Markbegleiter? and how would you say this in EN? Googling didn't help me much.

Marktbegleiter is an euphemism for Konkurrent or Wettbewerber (100% confidence on that), and I'd simply call it a competitor in English (50% confidence on the translation).

Hmm, I'm not at all sure that Marktbegleiter is derogatory. It might, but I've talked to sales managers who'd use the term in a neutral way. If there was any connotation, it was more like "We're not supposed to say 'Konkurrent' anymore."

| I think in this case there is a bit of sarcasm meant considering the speaker spoke to a filled room of 450 and the employee of the Marktbegleiter had only 15 come to his presentation. "competitor" in quotes I think conveys that bit of sarcasm while still getting that competitor idea in there |
