Radi se procesima koji imaju kao nuspojavu visoku emisiju ugljičnog dioksida. "Ugljični dioksid" je mnogo ispravnije nego samo "ugljik", jer se radi o dvije potpuno različite stvari. Ovdje se radi o emisijama plina - ugljičnog dioksida. Ugljik je element, sudjeluje u ogromnom broju kemijskih spojeva i sam po sebi nema veze niti sa plinom niti sa klimatskim promjenama, jer čist ugljik se pojavljuje samo kao grafit, dijamant ili Fullereni.
U Engleskom jeziku je nažalost postala opća praksa da se "carbon dioxide" zbog praktičnosti skraćuje na "carbon", što, kao što sam već naveo, je potpuno pogrešno jer su to dvije različite stvari. U prijevodima bih ja uvijek koristio "ugljični dioksid" za "carbon" kada se pod tim podrazumijeva "carbon dioxide". Sve ostalo je samo širenje pogrešne terminologije iz jednog jezika u drugi.

neutral milena beba : It is not the task of a translator to ractify this type of ‘error’ as they not meant to edit the ST unless agreed by the client. It would be if carbon dioxide were in ST. As both terms are equally used, accuracy in rendering ST is an essential requirement

It is not about rectifying the ST. It is about finding the best translation. "ugljični dioksid" is the correct expression, and as such it is (still) predominatly used in Croatian language (incl. e.g. Croatian mass media).

Both terms are correct. Till late 90-es "ugljični dioksid" had been used almost exclusively. Looks like "ugljikov dioksid" gained on popularity the last couple of decades, or so. Anyhow, I prefer the former.
