This is from VS Naipaul’s Miguel Street

“… You are charged with fighting Dorothy Morgan; you are charged with stealing two tolums [word in italics] and three sugarcakes. Do you plead guilty or not guilty?”

The setting is Trinidad in mid-20th C. A father is “publicly” charging his child in front of his neighbours.
I couldn’t find anything relevant on the Internet. Would appreciate any contribution. Thanks.
