Appartamento usually rules out 'una pensione' as a bed-&-breakfast boarding or guest-house, though not in the UK where provision of breakfast e.g. to benefit claimants/ social security recipients would take away UK Rent & Housing Act protection ('security of tenure') - and sidestep all-too-familiar legal bust-ups.

Le Residenze Turistico Alberghiere o RTA (i cosiddetti Residence) "sono esercizi ricettivi a gestione unitaria che forniscono alloggio e servizi accessori (pulizia, cambio biancheria, manutenzione) in unità abitative arredate costituite da uno o più locali, dotate di servizio autonomi di cucina".
In Italia la loro classificazione è soggetta alle stesse norme regionali che regolano il settore alberghiero. Si utilizzano i medesimi punteggi previsti per gli alberghi.
I residence sono molto diffusi in Italia, non solo nelle località di alto interesse turistico ma anche nelle città, dove ospitano chi per lavoro, studio o turismo deve trovare un alloggio temporaneo. In genere, nei posti altamente turistici si stipulano contratti di durata mediamente settimanale, in caso di alloggio per lavoro o studio anche più lunghi, fino a un mese.
