В целом, upstream но всех ипостасях означает все, что происходит "до того" - до окончания производственного цикла, до входа клапана Х и т.д.

Вот эта дама написала целую книгу с таким названием, где рассуждает о том, что можно и нужно сделать, чтобы проблема была устранена до достижения точки невозврата, т.е. неизбежной потребности в агрессивном медицинском вмешательстве, огромных затратах на лечение со стороны государства и пациента и пр. Аллегорически выражаясь, она предлагает "рассчитать и откоррекировать направление и силу потока".
