French term

packaging

Non-PRO French to English Tech/Engineering Cosmetics, Beauty packaging
This text specifies the characteristics of primary packaging that will be used for cosmetics.

It uses the anglicism 'packaging', defining it as the primary packaging for a cosmetic product, comprising separate 'articles de conditionnement' (such as the label, pump, bottle, cap or closure). There is no suggestion that this 'packaging' is the outer highly decorative layer designed to attract maximum attention from potential customers.

I am currently translating this term as 'packaging set'. I have excluded 'packaging unit' as this could be confused with the individual components. I had considered 'packaging ensemble', but I am aware that an 'ensemble' in English often implies some deeper aesthetic harmony.

Would anyone have a better suggestion?

Thanks

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

@ Thomas I am pretty sure that you have already delivered your translation to the client. I am therefore sorry that I could not respond anymore to the extended context during my holiday and look for a suitable answer. Perhaps you still have the opportunity to amend this term for the client, if it has not already been used by them.

Examples of the use of 'packaging' in the text 'Le Packaging est composé de plusieurs Articles de Conditionnement.'

'Article de Conditionnement : désigne un élément séparé du Packaging que le fournisseur va développer spécifiquement pour le donneur d'ordre, tels qu’un contenant ou un élément de bouchage.'

'Le fournisseur s’engage à fournir au donneur d'ordre tous les éléments nécessaires pour lui permettre d’évaluer l’impact environnemental des Articles de Conditionnements ou Packagings'
Johannes Gleim Oct 2, 2023:
@ Thomas To be able to suggest the correct English term, we need to know the French source term in its context, i.e. the complete sentence and other useful pieces of information about the packaged product.
Lorraine Dubuc Oct 2, 2023:
philgoddard Oct 2, 2023:
This is thoroughly confusing!

You haven't given any examples, and you seem to have answered your own question when you say 'primary packaging'. This can also be referred to as inner packaging. The outer layer, if any, is called secondary packaging.

FR-EN I made a mistake when submitting this question, and have tried to reverse the language pair. I am translating from French to English (British).

components

Could you use "the primary packaging components" to describe these items as a group?
Note from asker:
I can confirm that we are talking about primary packaging, Helene. However, I am wary of creating a conflict between 'components' and the 'items' within that group.

packaging

Note from asker:

secondary or tertiary packaging (transit or bulk packaging)

Thank you for the extended context, which excludes primary packaging, but still offers two other options, either secondary packaging or tertiary packaging. Depending on the wider context, you should select either secondary or tertiary packaging.

Packaging may be of several different types. For example, a transport package or distribution package can be the shipping container used to ship, store, and handle the product or inner packages. Some identify a consumer package as one which is directed toward a consumer or household.
:
It is sometimes convenient to categorize packages by layer or function: primary, secondary, etc.
Primary packaging is the material that first envelops the product and holds it. This usually is the smallest unit of distribution or use and is the package which is in direct contact with the contents.
Secondary packaging is outside the primary packaging, and may be used to prevent pilferage or to group primary packages together.
Tertiary or transit packaging is used for bulk handling, warehouse storage and transport shipping. The most common form is a palletized unit load that packs tightly into containers.

On distingue souvent 3 types d'emballage/suremballage :
1. L’emballage de vente ou emballage primaire, c’est-à-dire l’emballage conçu de manière à constituer, au point de vente, un article destiné à l’utilisateur final ou au consommateur ;
2. l’emballage groupé ou emballage secondaire, c’est-à-dire l’emballage conçu de manière à réunir, au point de vente, un groupe d’un certain nombre d’articles, qu’il soit vendu à l’utilisateur final ou au consommateur (par exemple trois sachets de purée dans une boîte), ou qu’il serve seulement à garnir les présentoirs aux points de vente (par exemple, pack de 6 bouteilles d'eau). Il peut être séparé des marchandises qu’il contient ou protège sans en modifier les caractéristiques de conservation ;

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conditionnement_(emballage)

Primary packaging is the packaging that contains the product.
Secondary packaging includes boxes or containers containing specific quantities of primary packages.
Tertiary packaging includes pallets and large shipping containers for storing and warehousing.
:
If you look in the supermarket’s storage room, you will find multiple layers of cases arranged on pallets, often encased in shrink wrap to keep the cases together. This type of packaging is called tertiary packaging, also referred to as bulk packaging or transit packaging.

Primary Packaging
Primary packaging is both first and last: It’s the first layer of protection for your product and the last piece of packaging the consumer opens. It’s a bag of potato chips, juice box, book of matches, or wrapper covering a bar of soap. It can also be a tray holding multiple products in place—say, as part of a beauty kit.
:
Secondary Packaging
The box holding the aspirin bottle. The case securing the soda cans. The plastic wrap on a two-for-one deal. Or the folding carton securing your fruit snacks. All are examples of secondary packaging, which holds together individual units of products.

In this sense, secondary packaging serves a practical purpose. It organizes or stabilizes products to get them shelf ready (especially retail-ready packaging).

All types of transit packaging – call them shipping boxes, outer cartons, transport outers or anything else – are generally made of cardboard and corrugated board and designed so that goods reach the recipient undamaged.
