: I'm not sure if this is quite safe, because another type of 'impact drive' also exists (which is not a 'rattle'!) — this is the simpler, older, manual impact driver operated by a hammer blow.

However, I can see it as a perfectly logical US description of what I know in GB as a 'windy gun' — the noise it makes is very much a kind of 'rattle' or (I would say) 'clatter'
It's certainly not a term I've come across in EN-GB

I'm guessing that by 'rattle', they mean the 'ratchet drive' used with interchangeable 'douilles' — I think we'd just call that a 'cliquet' in FR, though there may be a more formal fuller term.
As for '3/8"', I think this standard Imperial size is also used in metric (just like ½" plumbing fittings), so I wouldn't attempt to convert it into mm!
As for 'tool', I think the translation does rather depend on the exact nature of the tool itself, and indeed, the adaptor; in the absence of more clues from your wider context, you may have to fall back on 'outillage' etc.
