Design prevents replacement errors (meaning)

English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering
in a brochure on a butterfly valve

***Design prevents replacement errors*** and eliminates potential for loose parts to travel downstream and cause damage to equipment.

does it mean that when you try to fit replacement parts that are not specific for this model, they won't fit or you won't be able?

prevents misorientation

To me, the key word is BUTTERFLY valve, i.e. a symmetrical design. Replacement parts are designed in a way that they can't be installed the wrong way. The other explanation "it is designed in such a way that wrong parts will not fit," is an intrinsic feature of any design. I bet 3:1 that you won't be able to install, say, a clutch from a Mercedes 500 in VW's New Beetle...

Example: consider a throttle which is connected to a shaft by two screws. o represents the holes, | is the shaft. The first example is not fool-proof, the second design matches your description:

Not fool-proof:

O
O

Design prevents replacement errors:

O
O

Due to the position of the holes, the throttle can't be installed the wrong way.

agree Gillian Scheibelein : it is unlikely that anyone would use non-original parts (voids warranty etc), "prevents misorientation" is a really nice solution IMHO

agree RHELLER : replacement error is sufficiently vague - could mean putting it in upside down, for example

Design does not admit replacement other than with original parts

that may lead to damage.
It is a guess.

You won't be able because parts wouldn't fit - see explanation attempt

This valve seems to have a unique, foolproof (technical) design that makes it impossible to fit inappropriate replacement parts. IOW, such errors are excluded by design as parts don't get mixed up. Another nuance coming into play here IMO: you can't fit parts other than those provided by the original manufacturer.
