Swedish term

Prylning

Swedish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
I know what it means in the context of pile-driving - it's a kind of pre-boring process ("varvid ett bergskoförsett, grovt stålrör först slås genom fyllningen och därmed undantränger de hinder som finns", according to hercules.se, and they should know!), but what's the English word for it?

My stab at this.

Also from hercules.se

4.4 Speciella åtgärder vid installation av betongpålar
4.4.1 Prylning

This seems to match (also compare the images).

Spudding (Punching) (p. 330)

15.26 SPUDDING
Spudding is the act of opening a hole through dense material by driving or dropping a short and strong member and then removing it. The contractor may resort to spudding in lieu of jetting or predrilling when the upper soils consist of miscellaneous fill and debris. A potential difficulty of spudding is that a spud may not be able to be pulled when driven too deep. However, an advantage of spudding is that soil cuttings and groundwater are not brought to the ground surface, which could then require disposal due to environmental concerns. Two spudding devices are shown in Figure 15-49. The spud in Figure 15-49(a) consists of a thick walled pipe section with a conical tip formed from steel plates. The spud in Figure 15-49(b) was made by adding a wedge shaped tip and plates to a H-pile section.

I can’t find any bilingual references to confirm a connection between prylning and spudding. It is presumably via the idea of punching or piercing.

Pile Driving Glossary
Spud: A short, strong member driven and then removed to make a hole (for inserting a pile that is too long to place directly in the pile driver leads) or to break through a crust of hard material. Also a movable vertical pipe or H-section placed through a strong frame on a floating pile driver or dredge to hold the vessel in position.
Spudding: The operation of raising and dropping a heavy pile to break through a thin layer of hard material or an obstruction.

9. METHODS OF STARTING PILES
9.1 Spudding
This is a method of making a hole to place the pile. It is usually used where obstructions or consolidated material is impeding the proper installation of the piles. The spud can be any type of heavy section, either H-Pile or a pipe. The H-Pile is likely to have a point cut on the end and possibly some reinforcing plates. A pipe section may have a conical point or it may have a cutting edge burned onto it. The type of point is determined by the type of obstruction. If it is a boulder that might be pushed out of the way, then the conical end would be use. But if the obstruction is timber, then cutting through it would be the strategy. The pipes are usually larger in diameter and have a heavier wall than the pile being driven.

5.3.6 Spudding
Spudding is the technique of inserting into the soil, before pile installation, a shaft or mandrel for the pur¬pose of forcing a hole through hard soil layers, trash, overlying fill, and other conditions. Spudding a starter hole may be help¬ful in penetrating especially difficult material located near the surface that may tend to deflect the pile when driven. (p. 109)

(2) Spudding. Another procedure is to use a spud. This is a section of heavy pile which is driven through or past the obstruction and removed for reuse. Then the pile is inserted through the passage so cleared.

(c) Obstructions may be removed by assisted installation or may be pierced with a spud. A spud is a mandrel, heavy steel pipe or H-pile section driven to provide a pilot hole. The spud is withdrawn and the pile inserted into the hole and driven to the embedment depth.

Note from asker:
Ooh, lovely - that looks like exactly the right term! I tried to find monolingual English references describing the process but had no joy - but clearly there are lots of them.

This may fit.
The reference includes Displacement Drilling in its explanations and it almost fits your description!
