Change log

Apr 28, 2020 14:15: Carol Gullidge changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

May 12, 2020 12:49: Barbara Cochran, MFA Created KOG entry

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): neilmac

Non-PRO (3): TechLawDC, Jane Martin, Carol Gullidge

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

neilmac Apr 28, 2020:
PRO query The lack of agreement evidenced below with the three solutions posted so far leads me to consider it PRO level. As I see it, if it were non-pro, there would be more of a consensus.

trchnology and informatics

my take
Peer comment(s):

agree AllegroTrans : This isn't wrong, but "IT" is the far more-often used term for informatics

IT comes from the US
neutral Stephen D. Moore : "Informatics" is a term that would get a "Huh?" response among the people I know.

information technology (IT)

Standard term encountered thousands of times.
I don't agree that "technology and informatics" or "technology and computer science" are idiomatic. Not to mention that "technology" in those answers is extremely overbroad such as to invalidate the answers.

CHANGED ANSWER: I concur with Phil Goddard's criticism. I don't agree with the original text, but I also don't feel that we as translators should be too quick to edit the author. Therefore:
NEW ANSWER: Technology [(more broadly)], and Information Technology (IT).

neutral philgoddard : No, it's not just about IT. http://educacion.usc.edu.co/index.php/itemlist/category/37-l...

neutral Robert Carter : That would be fine if the query were "tecnología de la información" or just "informática" on its own, but unless you are actually sure "Tecnología e Informática" means IT, then you can't simply omit "tecnología," no matter how idiomatic IT is.

neutral AllegroTrans : This is the title of a course; how are you so certain that it's only about IT??
3 horas
agree neilmac : I must admit I'd be tempted just to call it IT, for example on a CV.

technology and information science

According to the DRAE, "informática" includes but is not limited to computer science.
