I am unsure if this refers to a "five yearly refresher" course, or if it is an updated module on the course. Maybe more or less the same thing, but I do not know what would be the best term to use.

The fact remains... that refresher is often code for a fail and retraining and I do have a name, even if un-English.

Driving us mad Yes. It has, Tom - and it is disingenuous to suggest otherwise. I have actually acted for (unhinged) UK motorists who have had to take such a refresher course.

Driving The fact that banned drivers take a refresher course has got nothing to do with the refresher course, and everything to do with the banned drivers. Anyway this is not about driving. And I am not "youthful".

nothing There is nothing deleterious about the term "refresher course". Refresher courses are perfectly normal.

It's not either/or, Phil No, Lara, shouldn't use 'refresher' as that is a disguised affront, suggesting - as it does - that the participants have fallen short in some respect/s and need retraining, whereas an update is a neutral up-to-speed term. BTW, struck-off professionals on the British Isles - including Ireland, e.g. accountants, doctors & lawyers I know an Eire Uni. law lecturer who administers such Courses have to take a 'refresher' - rather than an update course pre-admission.

Five-Yearly Update vs. Refresher or Revision

The nature of the word of Aggiornamento suggests that update is a better, positive option, whilst Garzanti gives refresher course for corso di aggiornamento.

Revision looks like a first-time exam study, whilst refresher might be euphemistic for an employee who has re-entered the profession or dropped a (health & safety) clanger and needs re-educating cf. driving refresher courses post-motoring accident.
