"Pour un retour aux textes: défense et illustration du “Petit guide-âne” des art. 1156 à 1164"
This is from the title of a text cited in a legal textbook. I need to put a translation of the title in brackets (as per client guidelines). I understand the concept of this term but can't think of an English equivalent. I have found this, which explains it well, but isn't bringing to mind a translation at the moment: http://www.academie-francaise.fr/guide-ane
Thanks!

Idiot's Guide
An idiomatic English expression.
Example sentence:
I had to swot up on the Idiot's Guide to tractor repair.
Note from asker:
I actually like this translation and considered it myself because obviously the reference is meant to be a little humorous or figurative, since it is in quotes and it is referring to articles contained in a code, an odd way to describe a legal article. I actually don't find it out of place. The context itself is a title to an article on the legal doctrine, and I find that authors try to be clever when coming up with titles to commentary. I'm leaning toward this one. |

brief beginner's guide
The main point of this term is that it is a brief and simple, rudimentary instruction. It is then simply a case of finding what phrase might be used in English for a similar item.

: The contemporary slang US equivalent nowadays seems to be "Law 101".
