Italian term

restituire a un oggetto la relativa leggibilità

Italian to English Other Materials (Plastics, Ceramics, etc.) restauro
From the leaflet of a restoration studio (bottega del restauro)...
How would you translate it into english?
I don't think the term "readability" would work in this context, maybe some idiomatic expression should be used? something like "bring new life to the object"? or something more literal like "to recover the message of an object/behind the object"?
Thanks for helping.

make an object legible again

Everybody knows what "legible" means. It's a perfectly normal term. It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with reading. It also applies to visual comprehension

Thanks Tom

In page 107, it is written "In essence, the participants were being encouraged to contribute to the associations and understanding of an object whilst simultaneously being asked to degrade its readability."
Note from asker:
Thanks. However, I am not sure because in the text you mention readability refers to graphs, while in my example it refers to an object, specifically a piece of furniture

to restore it's identity?

given the lack of context it's hard to guess, but how does that sound?
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tom in London : "it's" means "it is".

make an object intelligible again

restore meaning to it. or identity (already posted), recognisable etc.

Italian art criticism makes very heavy use of metaphors taken from the world of literature, so it is a good idea to lighten this in translation.
