German term

Brandkanal

German to English Tech/Engineering Engineering (general) metaphorical usage to apply to financial system
Quoting an article in the FAZ by Hau and Sinn:

Die von der EU-Kommission vorgeschlagene Bankenunion werde „in der Öffentlichkeit als ein Mittel dargestellt, eine **Brandmauer** zum Schutz der südeuropäischen Euroländer zu errichten, doch in Wahrheit eröffnet sie einen Brandkanal, der es den Flammen ermöglicht, sich in die Budgets der noch gesunden Euroländer hineinzufressen“.

I get the idea, which is explained below by the author, but I can't figure out if there is a term for this in English.

Explanation from author: A famous example is from the battle of Jutland, where the British "Invincible" got sunk, because they had, in order to speed up their shelling during the battle, left open the fire walls along the way from the ammunition dumps to the gun towers, so they could carry the ordinance faster, creating a "Brandkanal", through which the fire spread, within seconds, from the gun tower to the ammunition dump, once a German shell hit the gun tower. When the ammunition dump exploded, the ship sunk and took all but 6 of the more than 1000 people on board with it.

Thanks!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This one and "fire corridor" seem equally suitable, but this came first. Thanks!"

fire corridor

The translated segment around it might go something like this:

"..but instead this creates a fire corridor enabling the conflagration to burn a (huge) hole in the budgets of the remaining healthy EU countries."

Example from link below:
"Forested areas cleared by logging encourage the dominance of flammable grasses, and abandoned logging roads overgrown by vegetation may act as fire corridors."

Fueled the fire

Here, there is a wise implication in this article.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Kim Metzger : Wise implication? We need a noun.

disagree Cetacea : What article? Anyway, a Brandkanal isn't fueling any fires.

disagree pj-ffm : What, no "Imho"? I'm "5" confident that this is not correct.
