Ventanas al interior

Spanish to English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Documentary Title
Hi all,

This is the title of a feature-length documentary about 5 political prisoners (ETA) in jail in the Basque Country. The original title is in Basque with this Spanish title in parenthesis. I'm currently using "Views from the Inside", but not sure about "views" here and would appreciate some other angles on it.

Context:

"SINOPSIS
Cinco directores retratan a cinco presos políticos vascos.

Going into UK English. Thanks.

Discussion

@David and Kate Meant to say appreciate your comments re "on the outside looking in" - totally agree.

Goodness me... So much to choose from! º_º
James A. Walsh (asker) Sep 17, 2012:
@Everyone: some more context I'm overwhelmed by all the discussion and suggestions this has prompted - thanks, folks! Just thought I'd post a bit more context. The translation is actually an interview with the documentary makers to be published in a magazine. Later on it mentions:

And then it goes on to detail each of the 5 stories...
Kate Major Patience Sep 17, 2012:
David is totally right: I was thinking there was something that bothered me about that one, and that's it: the use of that expression would be something like "I always felt like I was on the outside looking in".
David Ronder Sep 17, 2012:
The problem with "on the outside looking in" is that it is a metaphor of exclusion, when in this case the excluded are by definition on the inside.

I mean people are usually on the outside of some establishment or clique, looking in.
James A. Walsh (asker) Sep 17, 2012:
@Ana, Ion and Denise Excellent observations there, thank you! "On the outside looking in" sounds good to me.
Denise Phelps Sep 17, 2012:
Ion's last comment brings to mind a very common set phrase in English which might serve your purposes: 'on the outside looking in' (https://www.google.es/search?q="on the outside looking in "&...
Ion Zubizarreta Sep 17, 2012:
"Views from the Inside" sounds good, but this title gives more prominence to the prisoners, while both the Spanish and Basque titles give a more active part to the viewers. As Ana mentions, the point of view is from the outside looking in.
Ana Gutierrez Sep 17, 2012:
Hi Ion In the Spanish version 'ventanas al interior', the point of view is from outside looking in, is it the same in Basque?
Ion Zubizarreta Sep 17, 2012:
The Basque tittle "Barrura begiratzeko leihoak" uses the term "windows" as well (lehioak).
James A. Walsh (asker) Sep 17, 2012:
Basque title is: "Barrura Begiratzeko Leihoak"
James A. Walsh (asker) Sep 17, 2012:
Hi Kate, I haven't really been given any instructions to speak of, only that it's needed for tomorrow lunchtime... Don't think I'm gonna worry too much about sticking to window aspect. Here's a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4C8wL5cA1U
As far as I can see it's just 5 stories from the "inside" (ie, prison)
Ana Gutierrez Sep 17, 2012:
Original title in Basque Maybe you can post the original in Basque? We don't know how close/far the Basque and the Spanish titles are, do we? That might give you a clue about how to approach the translation into English.
Kate Major Patience Sep 17, 2012:
Hi James I was wondering how closely you want to stick to the original (or how closely your client wishes to stick to the original) because there are plently of options if you don't have to worry too much about the window aspect (i.e. if there is a lot of window imagery throughout the works or in the visual materials that'll influence your decision, evidently). If you don't have to worry about windows, then perhaps something like "insider perspectives" or "inside/insider views" might work? Reading the context you provide, that's what we're talking about, right?

Windows looking in

if you decide to keep to the 'windows' metaphor, this is another possibility: a similar idea is used for this exhibition, which then makes the connection with looking within people:

Windows on life inside

Excellent discussion here. KudoZ at its best.

This suggestion is really designed as a way of keeping "windows", which is not essential but would be nice, considering that the word is explicitly mentioned in the Basque and Spanish versions, while (hopefully) keeping it reasonably idiomatic. You do talk about windows on things: windows on the world, windows on life; but "windows on the inside" is no good, because that would mean that the windows are situated inside something, and "windows onto the inside" doesn't quite do it for me. But "windows on life inside" might be a solution.

OK, I can't quote you an instance of "windows on life inside", but "windows on life" is very common, and so is "life inside" referring to prison (though it can refer to other things, of course). Not for nothing is the UK prison information website called "Inside Information", with an online newspaper called "Inside Time":

Looking in

Seeing as there's a ring, this is my hat.

I think it's a shame not to use "windows" and also "inside", as that's a synonym for prison, but I do feel this has a documentary ring to it.

There's also a satisfying word play: apart from the literal sense of looking in to prison, to look in is to visit (informally) as the documentary makers are doing here, and to look into something is of course to investigate it.

inside, looking out/incacerated visions

"inside, looking out" is good because "inside" is also UK English for being in prison.

The 2nd take "incacerated visions" is if you want to go for the psychology of the thing,
but I reckon that might be too airy-fairy

Looking Within

My two cent's worth.
Not the snappiest of titles, or one that pinpoints what the documentary is about. It almost begs for a second phrase/subtitle.
Went for within because I'm assuming there's some inner reflection going on in what the prisoners say, so it covers that element along with within prison walls/bars and within the events that put them there.
