Hi
I'm translating a short exhibition text. I understand 'mais densas ou mais espessas' to refer here to the 'tintas' and feel as though an opposition is being set up. But don't both 'densas' and 'espessas' here mean 'thick'? Have I misunderstood the construction?
"As tintas aplicadas sobre a tela são feitas pelo artista, recuperando o labor anterior ao acto de pintar, que aqui não existe enquanto acção de um instrumento sobre uma superfície, determinando a expressão do gesto pela sua fluidez – **mais densas ou mais espessas**, e desta forma mais rápidas ou mais lentas."

Comment: "thanks Nick. I went with my own version as above, but yours is a good and clear solution to an apparently confusing idea."

thinner or thicker
well, "densas ou espessas" as you rightly said both mean "thicker" but I do think they are trying to talk about opposites here, so my guess would be what I wrote above.

high build or low build paints
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_high_build_paint
A high build paint can be sprayed thicker without running or sagging. This is important when you are trying to get better hiding properties. We use a high build paint for our contractor grade paint on new construction houses. From a Glidden web site I saw that their high build paint could be sprayed up to 20 mils thick, whereas from a Diamond-Vogel web site I saw that their non-high build paint could only be sprayed to a thickness of 4 or 5 mils.

The type of material and its level of finish will directly determine the finish of the opening’s reveal surface. If the reveal surface of the opening is to be left as off-form, or coated only with a flat (low build) paint , imperfections on the reveal surface will be visible unless the forms are of good quality ply or steel.

: but isn't this industrial painting rather than that done by an "artista"?

Yes, it is. I realize it is not in context; but as it would be useful in another context, I will let it here. :)
