German term

Nachkommen

German to English Science Medical: Pharmaceuticals
I'm translating a cooperation agreement for a clinical research study - mostly standard contract stuff. There are, however, a few sections that are beyond my expertise. I'm using 'derivatives' for Abkömmlinge, but I'm not sure whether the standard ‘descendants’ or ‘offspring’ would be appropriate for Nachkommen here.

Descendants

The following text deals with cells (stem cells) with the capacity of self-renewal - this means they are (more or less) genetically identical (thus, clones). This is the meaning of the context to - "Nachkommen" is defined as a derivative (of cell, DNA etc.) that is an unmodified "Abkömmling" (derivative [just perfect] (thus, a clone).

We disclose a method comprising: (a) providing an embryonic stem (ES) cell; and (b) establishing a progenitor cell line from the embryonic stem cell; in which the progenitor cell line is selected based on its ability to self-renew.

6. A method according to claim 1, in which the progenitor cell line is established by exposing embryonic stem cells or their descendants to conditions which promote self-renewal of putative progenitor cells.

As an alternative you could use "clone" - but since the German text uses "Nachkommen" intentionally (not "Klone") the translation should keep the broader sense of meaning, too.

More examples for descendants:

Upon expression of Cre protein, all cells and their descendants transcribe the lacZ gene, and therefore NC cell fate can be monitored directly with and without Foxd3 function.

Genomes of eukaryotes
• majority of the DNA is in the nucleus, separated into
bundles (chromosomes)
– small amounts of DNA appear in organelles (mitochondria and
chloroplasts)
• within single chromosomes gene families are common
– some family members are paralogues(related)
• they have duplicated within the same genome
• often diverged to provide separate functions in descendants
(Nachkommen)
• e.g. human αand βglobin
– orthologuesgenes
• are homologues in different species
• often perform the same function
• e.g. human and horse myoglobin
– pseudogenes
