колыхаться (about a crowd)

русский => английский Искусство/Литература Литература и поэзия
Hello everyone

I'm not sure as to what 'колыхаться' means in this context:

"Вечерний "Эмбасси" предстал передо мной совершенно иным. Когда мы подъехали в автомобиле - Кэндалл за рулем, Кирилл рядом, я и алкоголик Ян Злобин. заваленные вещами на заднем сиденье, у входа в отель колыхалась, хохоча целая толпа."

Thanks for your help

Discussion

Angela Greenfield Jul 27, 2009:
Колыхалась is the word that evokes the movement of wheat or corn in an open field. It's actually a standard verb in word combinations like "колышется пшеница", "колышущаяся пшеница". It also is used to describe the movement of hot air (like what one may see in a desert).
I think one needs to render that meaning.

undulating crowd

Clad in a sleeveless brown shirt that displayed his many upper-arm tattoos, the charming blues-pop singer looked every bit the festival leader, particularly as swooping crane shots revealed the ***undulating crowd*** on giant video screens. http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:HvY7OFpB86EJ:www.denverp...

A vast, undulating crowd waits for the show to begin. http://artlog.com/events/2373-mark-shetabi-arena

And, of course, a jury reasonably could think that hand baggage of assorted size, shape, and weight on the floor alongside, or in front of, a group of passengers loosely lined up several abreast might cause people to stumble, lose their balance, trip or fall as the ***undulating "crowd"*** of people slowly move forward or backward in the course of beginning, or making, or concluding air travel. http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:XTADmMYwx2YJ:openjurist....

Your sentence would read: at the hotel entrance [...] a whole crowd was undulating with laughter.

Example: Duerma giggled, her whole little body undulating with laughter. http://corrienda.livejournal.com/

We pulled the bushes aside and spotted Blaustein flat on his back with his big belly undulating with laughter. http://books.google.com/books?id=DNkmw30tbrYC&pg=PA119&lpg=P...

agree Rachel Douglas : This is what I was going to propose yesterday, but I didn't have a good enough feel for the Russian word. Another temptation was to write "milling around", but this seemed rather specifically different.

Thank you, Rachel. You know, in Russian "колыхаться" unavoidably brings to mind the movement of a wheat crop.

The result is a "wave" of standing spectators that travels through the crowd...

Peer comment(s):

neutral Rachel Douglas : Who were they waving to? You have two different things here: "to wave" (рукой) in the sentence w the balloon (which is from a "wrong sentences" page, by the way, because it has the crowd rising into the air!); and the others use "wave" as a noun.
