Can anyone help me with the equivalent of the phrase "nave da traffico", described by the client as: "Navi destinate al traffico commerciale, che effettuano scali in più porti e con itinerari prestabiliti, che entro 24 ore dall'arrivo in porto ripartono per il successivo scalo di linea". The phrase occurs in strings for a port management programme, so I have no other context. Thanks, Sarah.

Comment: "I had great difficulty in choosing the "right" answer here, but I decided in the end to go for this, because I deduce from the context that the difference between "passenger" and "freight" is more important for the client than the matter of fixed schedules or otherwise. As ever, a big thanks to you all, Sarah. "

commercial ship

liner
An ocean liner is a ship designed to transport people from one seaport to another along regular long-distance maritime routes according to a schedule. Liners may also carry cargo, and may sometimes be used for other purposes (e.g. for pleasure cruises or as troopships). Cargo vessels running to a schedule are sometimes referred to as liners.

Note from asker:
With a provisional thanks to you both, just wanted to explain that another string in the series refers to "Navi di linea" which I had translated as "liners". So I have to translate one of them as something different! |

A couple refs for tramp:
- a cargo vessel running between many different ports rather than sailing a fixed route (Oxford)
- a merchant ship that does not run on a regular schedule but carries cargo wherever the shippers desire (Collins)

Barbara
