Discussion

Sue Davis Jan 6, 2018:
Sue Davis Jan 6, 2018:
I still think it is more likely that is it the spinal cord. They are obviously looking for spread into the meninges - the spinal cord is surrounded by the meninges whereas the medulla oblongata has meninges anteriorly with the cerebellum posteriorly. They could be checking for spread outside the cranial cavity. If you look at axial MRIs of the medulla oblongata they usually include the cerebellum and the text sort of implies that this is an additional scan of a specific structure. https://openi.nlm.nih.gov/detailedresult.php?img=PMC3137827_... However it might be an idea to check with the client or include a translator's note - I would say the text isn't completely clear.
Sarah Webb (asker) Jan 5, 2018:
No images I'm afraid just around 150 words of text.
Sarah Webb (asker) Jan 5, 2018:
Thanks for your input - the first part of the text (my translation as it's a scan) is
MRI OF THE BRAIN UNDER SEDATION
Reason: supratentorial ETMR. Incomplete resection. Final assessment of treatment. Lesion size? Further lesion?
Does that help with context?
Sue Davis Jan 5, 2018:
It could be moelle allongée on the other hand could not complément indicate an additional scan ie of the spinal cord? Are there any images?
dwt2 Jan 5, 2018:
Depends if they are deferring to "moelle allongée" (= medulla) or "moelle épinière (= spinal cord). My guess would be the former given the context.
liz askew Jan 5, 2018:
Hi,
What are they looking for, trying to rule out?

agree Sue Davis : I think this is most likely though it would be good to have moelle épinière

medulla

Not my field, but it does appear to be a possibility, as moelle seems to be a translation of medulla.

Thank you, mchd
neutral liz askew : how does this tie in with the leptomeninges?/spinal cord, not chord!

I said I was guessing! And without épinière, spinal chord didn't seem conclusive. / I beg your pardon.
neutral Sue Davis : I think medulla oblongata is usually bulbe rachidien
