English term

Friend with benefits

English to Japanese Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
What would the Japanese equivalent be of the English "friend with benefits"?

The meaning being, a friend that someone occasionally has sex with, but the relationship is otherwise platonic (non-romantic), and neither party has any intent for the relationship to become romantic, although the sexual content may be ongoing.

Thanks!

Thanks William! I hope you don't get too many disagrees because of me ;)

Members only? Why? I was going to suggest another term, a bit more delicate than セフレ or やり友 (which to me sound a bit closer to, excusez le mot, "f*ckbuddy" than "friend with benefits"), but for some reason the question is needlessly limited to paid members, so I can't. Yes, I'm sulking, I know ;)

EDIT: Ah, what the hell - know my good heart. I think 友達プラスアルファ might work too - while it is mildly humorous, it sounds lighter thank either of the two above and puts more accent on the "friend" part. Googling the term (don't forget to put quotation marks around it, or you'll get a lot of irrelevant results) shows some usage examples - yes, not too many of them, but still. Anyway, just my two yen - プラスアルファ seems to be a pretty popular expression recently, so I believe it would be understood even without the term being well established.

To Kathy If both parties are single and unattached (nobody is two-timing).
KathyT Jan 21, 2009:
Hi conejo. As with the English, I guess the connotation depends entirely on the context as to whether it's neutral or not (eg. are both 'parties' otherwise single/unattached or two-timing, etc.). Context-dependent, I think it could be argued likewise that "friends with benefits" could be positive, neutral or negative... I think the same goes for the JP, but would love it if a NSofJ would comment...

To clarify A word that is used in casual conversation between friends that doesn't have a negative connotation.
conejo (asker) Jan 20, 2009:
Negative connotations Basically I am looking for a word that is pretty neutral (like fwb) and doesn't have any negative connotations. Do any of these words have negative connotations?

セフレ (セックスフレンド)

Is this too simple for what you're after? (hmmm, perhaps I need to rephrase that??) ;-)

Hi again - in that case, probably either sefure or yaritomo would be fine? I don't think it would be particularly negative in that context, just consensual! ;-)

agree michiko tsum (X) : Kathyさんすごい。やり友なんて言葉があるのさえ知りませんでした!どちらも、どちらかというとセックスのための友達で、友達とセックスするという意味は少ないかも。

友達プラスアルファ

I'm answering on behalf of Krzysztof.
Example sentence:

僕は始めは彼女を友達プラスアルファ程度にしか思っていませんでしたが、彼女の心の暖かさにだんだん惹かれて恋人として付き合うようになりました。
