These opposing findings in the U.S. data and the C-NAP data are potentially interesting. However, because the finding in the C-NAP data of the dominance of mother support over father support (as well as mother behavioral control over father behavioral control) was demonstrated over multiple samples, our first inclination is to replicate the analyses on other samples within the U.S. to assure that the findings in the U.S. data are not unduly informed by sample characteristics. The U.S. (Utah) sample was random and our analyses showed no evidence for difference in patterns based on sample characteristics (e.g., religious affiliation; for other findings of commonality of socialization experiences between Mormon and non-Mormon families, see Heaton, 2000; Heaton, Goodman, 8c Holman, 1994). However, replication is still merited, given that the findings run contrary to the oft-articulated presumption that mothers have more impact on their children's development than do fathers (as evidenced, for example, by the mere existence of the term "maternal deprivation"; Rutter, 2002).
