pushback

Though French texts explain the meaning of the word, I haven't found one that proposes a French equivalent, i.e. they use 'pushback' throughout.

As to what it is:

Pushbacks (Figure 1) are essentially a series of manageable exploitation phases for an open pit mine. A pushback is ideally composed of a unique, spatially contiguous volume that can be mined with available mining equipment and that meets practical geometric mining constraints.

Each pushback makes the open-cast mine larger (horizontally) and/or deeper.

Note from asker:
I will leave to client judge since I needed a French term but thanks for your suggestion

One of the topics I never really understood well at school was the concept of pushbacks (also known as phases or cutbacks) in open pit mining. Time and again we were shown a big pit design (the final pit) that was then split into smaller phases (pushbacks) and personally I failed to fully grasp the reason behind that. I had a couple of theories why I thought this happened.
