Prickly pears

Certain plants play a big role in defining the character of eastern Almería, especially in the rural areas. Of the apparently wild plants that are common, one of the largest and most obvious is the prickly pear (chumbera in Spanish). This is the species Opuntia ficus-indica, originally from Mexico, and it’s particularly widespread in our area. With clusters of thick pads covered in spines, it was widely planted on farms and fincas (country estates) in the 19th century. Its fruits were eaten and it also formed stock-proof hedging. Nowadays it rarely has the latter function but any fallen pads root easily and the plant can reach tree-like dimensions, its ear-like pads mildly comical in the landscape. Once established, prickly pear develops into a ferocious green tangle, creating impenetrable thickets which can form an effective firebreak due to its high water content.
