English term

magnetic audio frequency transmission

English to French Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng (in a patent) A mapping system for mapping a venue
a sensor unit (106) with a receiver coil, the sensor unit (106) being mobile for moving on a site, which is the venue, the sensor unit (106) being configured to receive a magnetic audio frequency transmission from the site (100) to be mapped and a magnetic audio frequency disturbance on the basis of interaction of the receiver coil with magnetic field and positioning data with respect to the site (100) to be mapped;

The processing unit 116 determines parameter values of at least one parameter of the audio frequency signal which is based on the magnetic transmission. The magnetic transmission may comprise the test signal and/or disturbance.

The magnetic disturbance may come from wires of the electric network i.e. from the mains. The frequency of the disturbance is typically 50 Hz which is an audio frequency because that is a typical frequency of the electric network.
However, the frequency may be different such as 60 Hz, for example. The disturbance may be caused by stray earth currents

The local database 110 may be a memory o f the sensor unit 106. Alternatively, the local database 110 may be a memory separate from the sensor unit 106 and the sensor unit 106 may transmit the detected audio frequency signal to the local database 110 wirelessly or via a wire.

@ Asker Right, thanks, that VITAL extra context makes all the difference here!

@ Asker What is the purpose of this "mapping"" process?
Daryo Apr 19, 2017:
@ X Fraipont from the limited context I can't see any audio signal being transmitted - only magnetic waves ["magnetic transmission"] at an "audio frequency"

the frequency mentioned as generating disturbances is 50 Hz, the frequency of the alternative current in the European electric power grids - these are electromagnetic waves NOT sound waves!

"Buildings, installations and institutions which have public addressing systems have often also an audio frequency induction loop-system (AFILS). The AFILS system transfers an audio signal through a magnetic coupling to a pick-up coil which can also be called a t-coil, a telecoil or a telephone coil of a hearing aid. The hearing aid, in turn, converts the magnetic signal back into the audio signal of the original information such that the user of the hearing aid can hear the audio signal."

neutral Daryo : this ST is not about any kind of hearing aid so "par boucle d'induction magnétque" sounds like a brave assumption. => WHERE do you see in this ST any transmission of audio signals?

Perturbations par les radio fréquences

Usuellement dit comme ça sans compliquer
Peer comment(s):

disagree Jennifer Levey : The ST has absolutely nothing to do with "radio fréquences". And the ST makes a clear distinction between "transmission" (wanted or useful signal) and "disturbances" (unwanted or interfering signals).

emission magnétique (modulée) à des fréquences sonores/voix

The ST author has failed to make a proper distinction in English between "emission" and "transmission". This is less critical in English than it is in French, where "emission" is the correct term IN THIS CONTEXT.

Coming from a broadcast engineering background, and with the standard ITU/UIT terminology in mind, I would also much prefer to see "audio" replaced by "sound" (or "voice") in English and "sonore" (or "voix") in French. In this ST context "audio frequency" refers to "voice-frequency" modulation of the emitted magnetic field, not to an "audio" signal in the usual sense of the term.

Finally, regarding Daryo's comments on this page, the ST appears to refer to a system in which the "wanted" signal is purely magnetic (probably propagated from an inductive loop, but that's not explicit in the ST extract), whereas most "disturbing" signals are "electromagnetic" (spurious/stray emissions resulting from the flow of current through electric power cables).
