Good thinking! I've never come across 'reverser' to mean pay back. Everyone seems to be thrown by the re- prefix.//Quite. Much the same idiomatically like 'rajouter' and 'se retrouver' or a withholder of tax 'reversant' such to the administration fiscale

: I think this is a slightly unusual choice of word, though it's not wrong. Repay, refund or reimburse are much more common.

As Adrien says, if XXX is NOT the original payer, then it is not a question of refunding — hence the difference between 'reverser' and 'rembourser'.
However, were that NOT to be the case, and it is indeed XXX who has made this original payment, then I think the use of 'refund' would be appropriate here.
